Rules used Rates and thresholds follow the TDS chart for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27): the Finance Act 2025 threshold revisions and the October 2024 cuts to commission (194H) and rent by individuals (194-IB). Resident payees only, so no surcharge or cess is added. Confirm the exact section and rate for unusual payments with a professional.

What is TDS?

Tax deducted at source: the payer keeps back a slice of certain payments and deposits it to the government against the payee's tax. The payee claims it as credit while filing their return. This tool covers payments to residents.

On what amount is TDS calculated?

On the amount before GST, where GST is shown separately on the invoice. Deduct once the payment crosses the section's threshold. Most sections then apply to the whole amount; section 194Q applies only to the value above ₹50 lakh.

What if the payee has no PAN?

Section 206AA kicks in: TDS is the higher of the normal rate or 20% (5% on purchases of goods under 194Q). Always collect the payee's PAN before paying.

When do I deposit TDS and file the return?

Deposit by the 7th of the next month (by 30 April for a March deduction), then file the quarterly TDS return (24Q, 26Q) and issue Form 16A. Late deposit carries interest of 1% to 1.5% a month.

Does this cover salary?

No. Salary under section 192 is deducted across the year at your slab rate, not a flat percentage. Use the income tax calculator and the in-hand salary calculator for that.
