Rules used FY 2026-27 (the first tax year under the Income-tax Act, 2025) and FY 2025-26: Budget 2026 kept the same rates. New regime: nil to ₹4 lakh, then 5% up to ₹8 lakh, 10% to ₹12 lakh, 15% to ₹16 lakh, 20% to ₹20 lakh, 25% to ₹24 lakh, 30% above; ₹75,000 standard deduction; the rebate (section 87A of the old Act, carried into the 2025 Act) makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh taxable income, with marginal relief above it. Old regime: nil to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh at 60–79, ₹5 lakh at 80+), 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh, 30% above; ₹50,000 standard deduction; rebate up to ₹12,500 to ₹5 lakh. Surcharge 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, 37% above ₹5 crore (old regime only; new regime capped at 25%), with marginal relief; 4% cess. Salary and other ordinary income only; capital gains are taxed separately.

Which regime is better for me?

It depends on your deductions. With few deductions, the new regime is usually lower, especially up to ₹12.75 lakh of salary where tax is nil. Large 80C, HRA and home-loan claims can make the old regime cheaper. The calculator shows both.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?

Under the new regime for FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27, yes: the the rebate (section 87A of the old Act, carried into the 2025 Act) makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income. For salaried people, the ₹75,000 standard deduction takes that to ₹12.75 lakh of salary. Capital gains taxed at special rates don't get this rebate.

Can I switch regimes every year?

Salaried people with no business income can choose each year when filing. People with business income can switch back to the old regime only once.
