Amounts are cumulative: what should have been paid in total by each date. Paying less means interest under sections 234B and 234C, about 1% a month on the shortfall. Resident senior citizens (60+) with no business or professional income don't need to pay advance tax.

Rules used Section 208–211: advance tax applies when tax after TDS is ₹10,000 or more. Cumulative instalments: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December, 100% by 15 March. Presumptive taxpayers under 44AD or 44ADA pay 100% by 15 March. Senior citizens without business income are exempt. Shortfalls attract interest under sections 234B and 234C.

Who has to pay advance tax?

Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS, is ₹10,000 or more. Salaried people usually don't, because TDS covers it, unless they have large interest, rent or capital gains.

What if I miss an instalment?

Interest of 1% a month applies on the shortfall under section 234C, and under 234B if less than 90% is paid by 31 March. Pay as soon as you can to limit it.

How do I pay advance tax?

Through the e-Pay Tax service on the income tax portal (challan ITNS 280, type of payment 100), by net banking, UPI or card.
