PAN Card Me Name Change Karne Ke Liye Documents (India, 2026)
Changing the name on a PAN card is a common correction: after marriage, after a legal name change, or simply to fix a spelling the card got wrong. The process itself is a standard online correction request, but it only goes through if you attach the right proof, including a document that supports why the name is changing. This guide sets out exactly which documents you need, grouped by what each one proves, so your request is not rejected.
- Form: the standard PAN correction request; tick the name field and enter the corrected name. The PAN number stays the same.
- Three basic proofs: proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth; Aadhaar often covers all three.
- Supporting proof: a marriage certificate, gazette notification or equivalent that explains why the name changed.
- Match Aadhaar: the new PAN name should match Aadhaar, since PAN and Aadhaar must stay linked.
- Non-individuals: companies, firms, trusts and HUFs use the official name-change record, not a personal certificate.
- Fee: a small processing fee applies, as notified on the portal.
01What you are actually filing
There is no separate "name change" form. You use the standard correction request titled "Request for New PAN Card or and Changes or Correction in PAN Data". You tick the box next to the name field, enter the corrected name, and attach the supporting documents. The PAN number itself does not change; only the name printed on the card and in the records is updated.
You can file this through either of the two authorised agencies, Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) or UTIITSL, or start it from the income tax portal. A small processing fee applies, as notified on the portal.
Keep the name consistent with Aadhaar
Your PAN name should match your Aadhaar name, because PAN and Aadhaar have to stay linked. If you change your name on PAN, make sure Aadhaar shows the same name, or the link can fail later.
02The documents you need
Every PAN correction request needs three basic proofs, plus one extra proof that supports the name change. Any one accepted document in each row is enough.
| What it proves | Documents you can use (any one) |
|---|---|
| Proof of identity | Aadhaar, Voter ID, passport, driving licence, or a government photo ID |
| Proof of address | Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, a recent bank statement, or a utility bill |
| Proof of date of birth | Birth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport, or Aadhaar |
| Aadhaar | Aadhaar number and details, required because PAN and Aadhaar must stay linked |
A single document such as Aadhaar can often serve as identity, address and date of birth at the same time. The one thing it does not do by itself is explain why the name is changing, which is where the supporting proof comes in.
03Proof that supports the new name
This is the document people forget, and it is the usual reason a name change is rejected. You have to show why the new name is correct. Which document you need depends on the reason for the change.
- Name change after marriage: a marriage certificate, or a marriage invitation card, or a publication of the new name in an official gazette, or a certificate from a gazetted officer stating the name change, or a passport that already shows the new or spouse name.
- Legal name change (not marriage): a publication of the name change in the official gazette is the standard proof. A gazette notification is the cleanest evidence.
- Spelling or clerical correction: any valid ID that shows the correct spelling, such as Aadhaar or passport, where the existing PAN simply has a typo.
For related corrections that follow the same pattern, see documents for correcting the father name on a PAN card and correcting the date of birth on a PAN card online.
The most common reason a PAN name change is rejected is a missing document that explains why the name changed, such as a marriage certificate or a gazette notification.
04Documents for a company, firm or HUF
If the PAN belongs to a company, LLP, partnership firm, trust or HUF rather than an individual, the supporting document is the official record of the name change, not a personal certificate.
- Company or LLP: the fresh certificate of incorporation or name change issued by the Registrar of Companies.
- Partnership firm: the revised partnership deed or the registrar record showing the new name.
- Trust or society: the amended trust deed or registration certificate reflecting the new name.
- HUF: a declaration by the karta along with identity proof of the karta.
For non-individual PANs, the person authorised to sign must also provide their own identity proof.
05How the correction is filed
Once your documents are ready, the steps are:
- Open the PAN change request on the Protean (NSDL) portal or on the UTIITSL portal.
- Select the option to update PAN data, enter your existing PAN, and tick the name field.
- Enter the corrected name exactly as it should appear.
- Upload or attach the proof of identity, address, date of birth and the document supporting the name change.
- Complete verification, usually with Aadhaar based e-KYC and an OTP, pay the processing fee, and submit.
- Note the acknowledgement number and track the request until the updated PAN is issued.
If you choose Aadhaar e-KYC, your name and details are pulled from Aadhaar, so the new PAN name has to match Aadhaar exactly.
06Common reasons a request is rejected
Most rejections are avoidable. Check these before you submit:
- No supporting proof: you changed the name but did not attach a marriage certificate, gazette notification or equivalent.
- Name does not match Aadhaar: if you use Aadhaar e-KYC, the new name must match Aadhaar, so update Aadhaar first if needed.
- Unclear scan: blurred or cropped documents are rejected; upload clean, full copies.
- Mismatched signature or photo: for physical submission, the signature and photo must meet the format rules.
07How Claw Tax helps
Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.
A straightforward PAN name change you can do yourself for free on the government portal once you have the right documents, and for a clean case that is the sensible route. Claw Tax is for the cases that keep failing: a name that will not match between PAN and Aadhaar, a rejected request you cannot diagnose, a legal name change that needs the gazette proof handled correctly, or a company or firm PAN tied to a Registrar record.
With Claw Tax and Accounts PAN services, a verified chartered accountant prepares and files the correction, checks the documents against the checklist, and sorts the PAN and Aadhaar match, with a Claw reviewer looking over the request before submission, at a fixed, published price. You approve before anything is filed. This is general information, not tax advice; a verified CA handles the specifics of your case.
08Frequently asked questions
Which documents are needed to change the name on a PAN card?
You need proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth (Aadhaar often covers all three), plus a document that supports the name change itself. For a change after marriage that is usually a marriage certificate; for a legal name change it is a gazette notification; for a simple spelling fix, a valid ID showing the correct spelling.
What proof do I need for a name change after marriage?
Any one of these is generally accepted: a marriage certificate, a marriage invitation card, a publication of the new name in the official gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer, or a passport that already shows the new or spouse name. Without one of these, the name change request can be rejected.
Do I need a gazette notification to change my name on PAN?
For a legal name change that is not due to marriage, a publication of the name change in the official gazette is the standard and cleanest proof. For a marriage related change, a marriage certificate usually works instead. For a simple spelling correction, a valid ID with the correct spelling is enough.
Will my PAN number change when I change the name?
No. The PAN number stays the same. Only the name printed on the card and held in the records is updated. You file a correction request, attach the documents, and a new card is issued with the corrected name against the same PAN.
Does the new name have to match my Aadhaar?
It should. PAN and Aadhaar have to stay linked, and if you use Aadhaar based e-KYC during the correction, the system pulls your Aadhaar name, so the two must match. If you are changing your name everywhere, update Aadhaar as well, or the PAN and Aadhaar link can fail afterwards.
Can I change the name on a company or firm PAN the same way?
The process is similar, but the supporting document is the official record of the name change rather than a personal certificate: the Registrar certificate for a company or LLP, the revised deed for a partnership firm, the amended deed for a trust, or a karta declaration for an HUF. The authorised signatory also provides their own identity proof.
