A step-by-step guide to finding and downloading a Gauhati High Court judgment or order online, free on the official portals, plus how to read, cite and search them well.

How-To Guide · Gauhati High Court

You can find a Gauhati High Court judgment or order free on the official Gauhati High Court website or on the eCourts judgments portal, by searching with the case number, party name, judge, date or Act, and then downloading the PDF. The harder part is finding the right judgment when you do not have the case number, and being sure your citation is correct. This guide gives the exact steps, explains reported and unreported judgments, and shows how to search by date range and keyword. For a faster all-court search with verified citations, Claw lets you search 30 crore+ judgments by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Free official sources: the Gauhati High Court website and the eCourts judgments portal, searchable by case number, party, judge, date and Act.
  • Reported vs unreported: a downloaded judgment is the court copy; cite unreported ones by case number and date.
  • Faster search: Claw searches 30 crore+ judgments by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds, with verified citations.
  • Different job: for live case stage, see the Gauhati case status guide.

01Why Gauhati judgments are hard to find

Finding a Gauhati High Court judgment sounds simple, but most people lose time on it. The court is the High Court for Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, so its judgments come from several states, benches and very different kinds of disputes.

You often do not have the case number

Official search works best when you know the case type, number and year. In practice, a client may only remember a party name, a rough month, or a news report. Then you must guess the filters and try spellings one by one.

Orders and judgments are not the same thing

A final judgment decides the case. An order can be an interim direction, an adjournment or a procedural step. Many people search for a “judgment” and miss the order they actually need, or the other way round. Knowing which one you want saves a lot of searching.

A downloaded PDF is not a citation

The official PDF gives you the text. It does not tell you whether the judgment is reported, how to cite it, or whether a later court has changed the law. A court-ready citation needs a second check.

This page is about judgments and orders. To check the stage of a live case, see our guide to checking Gauhati High Court case status.

02Where Gauhati High Court judgments and orders are published

There are two main free official places to look.

  • The Gauhati High Court website: the court’s own site, ghconline.gov.in, publishes judgments and orders, and its case status section links to orders for a case. Older judgments are also arranged month-wise in archives.
  • The eCourts Judgments and Orders portal: a national repository of High Court judgments at judgments.ecourts.gov.in. You choose the High Court and then search by criteria such as judge, case number, Act, section, party name, decision date and nature of disposal, or by free text.

Both are free. Neither is a substitute for checking the signed, certified copy when you need to file something in court.

03Step by step: find and download a judgment on the official portal

Follow these steps on the official Gauhati High Court website or the eCourts judgments portal. Menu names can change, so use the closest matching option.

  1. Open the official portal. Go to ghconline.gov.in or judgments.ecourts.gov.in. Use only the .gov.in addresses.
  2. Choose Gauhati High Court. On the eCourts portal, select the High Court first. On the court website, go to the judgments, orders or case status section.
  3. Pick how you want to search. Use case number if you have it. Otherwise use party name, judge, Act, decision date or free text.
  4. Enter the details. For a case number, enter the case type, number and year exactly. For a party name, try the shorter form of the name and a few spelling variants.
  5. Narrow by date. Add a from and to date. A tight range gives a short list.
  6. Complete the captcha and search. Then open the result list.
  7. Check the details before you open. Look at the parties, the bench, the date and whether it is a judgment or an interim order.
  8. Download the PDF. Save it with a clear file name, such as the case number and decision date.
  9. Record the source. Note the portal and the date you downloaded it, so you can show where the copy came from.

If the search returns nothing, widen the date range, remove the first name, or try the Act or section instead of the party name.

A good search starts wide on meaning and narrows on facts. These habits help on both official portals.

  • Use a date range, not a single date. Judgments are often uploaded some days after they are pronounced, so search a week or a month around the date you expect.
  • Search by Act and section. If you know the law, such as a section of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act or the Code of Criminal Procedure, an Act search is often cleaner than a name search.
  • Try keywords from the facts. Use two or three distinctive words, such as a place name or a subject, rather than a long sentence.
  • Vary party names. Spellings of local and regional names differ between records. Try short forms and alternate spellings.
  • Filter by judge. If you know the bench, the judge filter cuts the list quickly.

Official free-text search matches words. It does not understand your legal question, so you may need several tries.

05Reported vs unreported judgments

A reported judgment is one that a law report series has published, usually with headnotes and a report citation. An unreported judgment is a decision that is available as a court copy, but has not been published in a report series.

Most Gauhati High Court judgments you download from an official portal are the court copy. Whether a given one is also reported depends on whether a law report has picked it up. Unreported does not mean weaker. It means it may not have a report citation, so you cite it by case number and date.

A downloaded judgment is the court text. A citation is a way to point to it so that a judge can find the same text.

Use the court copy as your source of truth for what the court said. Use a report series only for the citation format and headnotes.

06How to cite a Gauhati High Court judgment

Cite in the way the court or forum in front of you expects, and always give enough detail for the reader to find the same document.

  • Reported judgment: give the parties, the report series, year, volume and page, then the court (Gau).
  • Unreported judgment: give the parties, the case type and number with year, the court, and the date of decision.
  • Neutral citation, if the judgment carries one: use it as printed on the judgment.
  • Add the paragraph number when you rely on a particular finding.

Before you cite, confirm the judgment has not been set aside, stayed or overruled. If you work on arbitration disputes from the region, see our guide to managing construction and infra arbitration for how judgments feed into a live matter.

09Frequently asked questions

How do I download a Gauhati High Court judgment online for free?

Open the official Gauhati High Court website or the eCourts judgments portal, choose Gauhati High Court, search by case number, party, judge, date or Act, and download the PDF from the result. Both are free to use.

Can I find a judgment without the case number?

Yes. Search by party name, judge, Act, section, a date range or keywords from the facts. A tight date range and a short party name usually work best. Claw also lets you search by free text across courts.

What is the difference between a judgment and an order?

A judgment finally decides the case or a main issue. An order is a direction, often interim or procedural, such as an adjournment or a stay. Check which one you need before you search.

How do I cite a Gauhati High Court judgment?

For a reported judgment, give the parties, report series, year and page, and the court. For an unreported one, give the parties, case number with year, the court and the decision date. Confirm it is still good law before you cite it.

Which areas does the Gauhati High Court cover?

The Gauhati High Court is the High Court for Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, so its judgments come from all four states.

What does Claw add over the official portals?

Claw searches 30 crore+ judgments across courts by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds, and returns verified court-ready citations. You can create a free account as an individual advocate. The official portals remain the place for the court copy.
