Udyam (MSME) Registration: How to Register Online, Get the Certificate, and the Benefits (2026)
How to do Udyam registration online for free, what you need, how to download the certificate, how micro, small and medium units are classified in 2026, and the benefits of registering.
How-To Guide · MSME · Udyam
Millions of small businesses search for Udyam registration every month, because the MSME tag opens cheaper loans, government tenders and legal protection when a buyer does not pay. You can register for free, online, in a few minutes, using Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN on the official portal. This guide gives the exact steps, the 2026 classification limits, how to download the certificate, the real benefits, and what to do if a buyer still delays your payment.
- Udyog Aadhaar: the old MSME registration (UAM) was replaced by Udyam from 1 July 2020. Re-register on Udyam.
- Cost: Udyam registration on udyamregistration.gov.in is free and paperless.
- You need: Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN (if registered), plus basic business details.
- Limits (from April 2025): micro up to Rs 2.5 crore investment and Rs 10 crore turnover; small up to Rs 25 crore and Rs 100 crore; medium up to Rs 125 crore and Rs 500 crore.
- Result: a permanent Udyam Registration Number and e-certificate, no renewal needed.
- Payment right: micro and small suppliers must be paid within 45 days at most, or the buyer owes interest, and disputes go to the MSEFC.
01What Udyam registration is, and why people do it
Udyam registration is the government’s free online system that recognises your business as a micro, small or medium enterprise (MSME). It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar and EM-II filings, which is why many people still search for “Udyam Aadhar”. The name is different, but it is the same idea: one permanent MSME identity for your business.
Once registered, you get a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate. The registration is paperless. You do not upload documents, because the portal reads your details from the Aadhaar, PAN and GST systems.
Why it matters in practice
Banks, government buyers and large companies ask for the Udyam number before they give MSME benefits. Without it, you cannot claim priority lending, tender preference or the delayed-payment protection described later in this guide.
Registration is free
The official portal does not charge any fee for Udyam registration. If a website or agent asks you to pay for it, check that you are on udyamregistration.gov.in before you pay anything.
02Udyog Aadhaar: the old MSME registration, and how to move to Udyam
Many people still search for “udyog aadhar”, “udyog aadhaar” or “udyog aadhar registration”. Udyog Aadhaar was the earlier MSME registration, issued as the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) with a 12-digit UAM number. It was replaced by Udyam Registration from 1 July 2020. You can no longer get a new Udyog Aadhaar. Today, micro, small and medium enterprises registration in India means Udyam registration.
What happened to existing Udyog Aadhaar holders
Businesses that already had Udyog Aadhaar or an EM-II filing were told to register again on the Udyam portal. The government extended the deadline more than once, and old Udyog Aadhaar numbers stopped being valid for MSME benefits after the final cut-off. Treat an old UAM certificate as expired and hold a Udyam certificate instead.
How to migrate from Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in.
- If you still hold a valid old registration, choose the option for those already registered under UAM or EM-II. If it is not offered, use the option for new entrepreneurs.
- Enter the Aadhaar number of the owner or signatory and verify with the OTP.
- Verify PAN and GSTIN, then confirm your business details, investment and turnover.
- Submit and download your Udyam e-certificate. Use the Udyam number from now on for banks, tenders and buyers.
The steps are the same as in the process below. The Udyam number is free and permanent, and the old UAM number does not carry over.
03Documents and eligibility
Almost any business that makes goods or provides services in India can register, as long as it fits the investment and turnover limits in the table below. You can be a proprietor, partnership, LLP, company, cooperative, trust or self-help group.
Keep these ready before you start:
- Aadhaar number: of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, with a mobile number linked for the OTP.
- PAN: of the business or the owner, depending on the organisation type.
- GSTIN: if your business is GST registered. The portal uses it to fetch turnover data.
- Bank account details: account number and IFSC code.
- Business details: address, date you started, main activity and NIC code, and number of employees.
Only one Udyam registration is allowed per business, but one registration can list several activities. Make sure your PAN and GST details match, because mismatches are the most common reason for errors.
04Step-by-step Udyam registration process
The Udyam registration process takes about 10 to 15 minutes if your details are ready. Follow the steps in order.
- Open the official portal. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered as MSME.
- Verify Aadhaar. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name as on Aadhaar. An OTP goes to the linked mobile. Enter it to continue.
- Select organisation type and verify PAN. Choose proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company or another type. Enter the PAN and the PAN holder’s details. The portal checks them against the income tax database.
- Enter GSTIN, if you have one. The portal checks the GST data and may fill in turnover for you.
- Fill the business details. Add the unit name, address, bank details, date of commencement, number of employees, and whether you do manufacturing or services. Pick the right NIC activity code.
- Declare investment and turnover. These are linked to your tax records, so they decide your class. See the classification table below.
- Submit and complete the final OTP. Check every detail first, because errors can delay the certificate.
- Get your number and certificate. You receive the Udyam Registration Number and can download the e-certificate. A copy is usually also sent to your email.
The portal screens and wording change from time to time, so always follow the on-screen instructions.
05Classification: micro, small and medium enterprise limits
An enterprise is classed as micro, small or medium based on its investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and its annual turnover. These limits were raised with effect from 1 April 2025.
| Class | Investment (plant, machinery or equipment) | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to Rs 2.5 crore | Up to Rs 10 crore |
| Small | Up to Rs 25 crore | Up to Rs 100 crore |
| Medium | Up to Rs 125 crore | Up to Rs 500 crore |
Both tests must be met for a class. If you cross either limit, you move up to the next class. The earlier limits (from July 2020) were Rs 1 crore and Rs 5 crore for micro, Rs 10 crore and Rs 50 crore for small, and Rs 50 crore and Rs 250 crore for medium. If your class changes, update your Udyam record.
06Udyam certificate download, print and update
You can download your Udyam certificate any time from the official portal. The certificate carries your Udyam Registration Number, a QR code, and your class, activity and address.
- To download or print: use the “Print/Verify” option on the portal, enter your Udyam number or application details, verify with OTP, and download the PDF.
- To update details: use the “Update details” option to change address, bank details, activity or turnover.
- To verify someone else’s certificate: a bank or buyer can verify an Udyam number on the same portal.
The registration has no expiry date, so you do not need to renew it. You only need to keep the details current as your business grows.
07Benefits of MSME registration
The main benefit of MSME registration is that it gives you official proof of your size, which unlocks several schemes and protections. The key ones are below.
- Priority sector lending: banks treat MSME loans as priority lending, which can make credit easier to get. Collateral-free loan cover is available under the credit guarantee scheme for eligible units.
- Government schemes and subsidies: many central and state schemes need an Udyam number, including some subsidies, interest support and technology upgrade schemes.
- Tender preference: public buyers have MSME-friendly procurement rules, and registered units may get relaxations in tenders, such as earnest money.
- Protection against delayed payments: micro and small enterprises have a legal right to be paid within a fixed time, and to claim interest if they are not. This is covered in the next sections.
- Lower fees and concessions: some patent, trademark and certification charges are reduced for eligible MSMEs.
- Easier onboarding with large buyers: many companies ask for the Udyam certificate when adding you as a vendor.
Benefits differ by scheme and by state, so check the rules of each scheme before you apply.
08Common mistakes to avoid
Most problems with Udyam registration come from small errors, not from the process itself.
- Name mismatch: the name must match Aadhaar and PAN exactly.
- Wrong activity code: a wrong NIC code can affect the benefits you claim later.
- Paying an agent for a free service: the government portal does not charge a fee.
- Ignoring updates: when turnover or class changes, update the record.
- Registering the wrong entity: if you plan to move from a proprietorship to a company, see how to register a company in India, then register the new entity.
09If a buyer delays your payment: the 45-day rule
A registered micro or small enterprise has a legal right to be paid on time. Under the MSMED Act, 2006, a buyer must pay within the agreed date, and that agreed period cannot be longer than 45 days from the day of acceptance of the goods or services. If there is no written agreement, payment is due within 15 days.
If the buyer pays late, it must pay compound interest with monthly rests at three times the bank rate notified by the RBI. The buyer cannot contract out of this interest. The protection is for micro and small suppliers, and the supplier must have its Udyam registration for the dues to be covered.
How the recovery process works
- Send a written demand to the buyer with invoices, delivery proof and the interest claim.
- File on MSME Samadhaan: the Ministry of MSME’s portal lets you register the delayed payment, which is forwarded to the concerned authority. See how to file an MSME Samadhaan delayed payment application.
- Reference to the MSEFC: the state Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council takes up the dispute, first through conciliation and, if that fails, through arbitration.
- Award: the Act expects the council to decide the dispute within 90 days of the reference. A buyer who wants to challenge the award has to deposit a part of the amount first.
Registering as an MSME is the start. The right to be paid on time, with interest, is where it can pay for itself.
An MSEFC matter is a real legal proceeding, with hearings, notices and dates, often over many months. The buyer may also challenge the award in court, so there can be a second set of dates to follow.
