PAN Card Link With Aadhar (India, 2026)

Most PAN card questions come down to a few tasks: linking it with Aadhaar, applying for a new one, replacing a lost card, and understanding how the PAN fits into your GST number. This guide covers the PAN and Aadhaar link in short, then the other common PAN card jobs, so you know which route to take and when a professional is worth it.

In short
  • Link: on incometax.gov.in under Link Aadhaar, with the Rs 1,000 fee if due, as notified.
  • New PAN: free instant e-PAN for individuals with Aadhaar, or Form 49A / 49AA through Protean or UTIITSL.
  • Lost PAN: you get a reprint of the same PAN, not a new number.
  • One PAN only: holding two PANs is not allowed; surrender any extra.
  • GST link: a GSTIN is built around your 10-character PAN, so a PAN comes first.
  • Entities: minors, HUFs, firms, trusts and NRIs each need their own PAN.

To link your PAN card with Aadhaar, go to the income tax portal at incometax.gov.in, choose Link Aadhaar, enter your PAN and Aadhaar, pay the late fee of Rs 1,000 under section 234H if one is due, and submit with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile.

Linking matters because an unlinked PAN can become inoperative, which holds up refunds and can mean higher tax deducted from your income. Your name, date of birth and gender should match on both documents, or the link will fail.

02Applying for a new PAN

If you do not yet have a PAN, you have two main routes.

  • Instant e-PAN: an individual who has an Aadhaar with a linked mobile can get a free instant e-PAN on the income tax portal, usually in minutes. This is the quickest route for a resident individual.
  • Form 49A or 49AA: apply through an authorised agency such as Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL. Residents use Form 49A; foreign citizens and some non-residents use Form 49AA. You upload proof of identity, address and date of birth, and pay the processing fee.

For the paper or online request through an agency, keep a scanned photo, signature and proof documents ready. The request for a new PAN application form is handled within the agency portal; you do not usually need a physical form.

03Replacing a lost or damaged PAN

If you have lost your PAN card, you do not get a new PAN number; you get a reprint of the same PAN. Apply for a reprint or a duplicate through Protean or UTIITSL, or download the e-PAN from the income tax portal if your details are already there.

A full walk-through is in what to do if you lost your PAN card and how to get a new one. If you only need to correct a detail, that is a change request, not a new PAN.

One person, one PAN

Holding more than one PAN is not allowed. If you accidentally have two, surrender the extra one. Applying for a second PAN instead of linking or reprinting your existing one can cause problems, so always use the same PAN.

04Reading your PAN and the GST link

A PAN is a ten-character code, for example ABCDE1234F. The fourth character tells you the type of holder:

4th characterHolder type
PIndividual
CCompany
HHindu Undivided Family (HUF)
FFirm or LLP
TTrust

Your GST number (GSTIN) is built around your PAN. A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, then your 10-character PAN, then an entity code, a fixed letter, and a check character. So the PAN sits in the middle of every GSTIN, which is why a business needs a PAN before it can register for GST.

05PAN for minors, HUFs, firms and trusts

PAN is not only for salaried individuals. Several other entities need their own PAN.

  • Minors: a minor can have a PAN, usually operated by a parent or guardian, which is later updated when the minor turns 18. See how to update a PAN card from minor to major online.
  • HUF: a Hindu Undivided Family files its own return and needs its own PAN, separate from the karta.
  • Firms, LLPs and companies: each needs its own PAN for filing and for GST registration.
  • Trusts and NRIs: trusts need a PAN to file, and non-residents often need a PAN for Indian income or investments, applied for on Form 49AA.

07Frequently asked questions

How do I link my PAN card with Aadhaar?

Go to incometax.gov.in, choose Link Aadhaar, enter your PAN and Aadhaar, pay the Rs 1,000 late fee under section 234H if one is due, and submit with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile. Make sure your name, date of birth and gender match on both documents, or the link will fail.

How do I apply for a new PAN card?

A resident individual with an Aadhaar and a linked mobile can get a free instant e-PAN on the income tax portal in minutes. Otherwise, apply on Form 49A (residents) or Form 49AA (foreign citizens and some non-residents) through Protean or UTIITSL, uploading proof of identity, address and date of birth and paying the processing fee.

I lost my PAN card. Do I get a new PAN number?

No. You keep the same PAN number and get a reprint or a duplicate card. Apply through Protean or UTIITSL, or download your e-PAN from the income tax portal if your details are already registered. Do not apply for a fresh PAN, because holding two PANs is not allowed.

Why is my PAN inside my GST number?

A GSTIN is 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, your 10-character PAN, an entity code, a fixed letter and a check character. The PAN sits in the middle, which links your GST registration to your income tax identity. That is why a business must have a PAN before it can register for GST.

Can a minor or an HUF have a PAN?

Yes. A minor can hold a PAN, usually operated by a parent or guardian and updated when the minor turns 18. A Hindu Undivided Family files its own return and needs its own PAN, separate from the karta. Firms, LLPs, companies and trusts also each need their own PAN.

What is the difference between Form 49A and Form 49AA?

Form 49A is the application for a new PAN by Indian citizens and resident entities. Form 49AA is for foreign citizens and certain non-residents. Both are submitted through an authorised agency such as Protean or UTIITSL with proof documents, and both result in the same type of ten-character PAN.
