How to Withdraw EPF/PF Online and Fix a Rejection
You can withdraw your Employees Provident Fund (EPF or PF) online through the EPFO Unified Member Portal once your UAN is active, your KYC is linked and your details are correct. The final PF settlement uses Form 19, the pension withdrawal uses Form 10C, and a partial advance uses Form 31, all filed online under one claim flow. A correctly filed claim is usually settled in a few working days. This page walks through the online steps, the documents and conditions, how long each claim takes, the common reasons EPFO rejects a claim, and exactly how to fix each one, including the appeal route when a rejection is clearly wrong. 01Before you apply
An online claim only goes through if four things are in order. Check them first on the member portal:
- UAN activated and your mobile number linked for OTP.
- KYC seeded and verified by your employer: Aadhaar, PAN and bank account with IFSC.
- Name, date of birth and gender matching exactly across UAN, Aadhaar and bank. A mismatch is the single biggest cause of rejection.
- Date of exit updated for the job you are claiming from. For a final settlement you normally cannot claim until two months after leaving, unless you are moving abroad or retiring.
02How to withdraw online
- Log in at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in with your UAN and password (or use the EPFO section in the UMANG app).
- Open Online Services > Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D).
- Verify the last four digits of your bank account and accept the certificate.
- Choose Proceed for Online Claim and select the claim type you want (full PF, pension, or advance).
- Fill the reason and amount where asked, upload a cheque or passbook image if prompted, and submit with the Aadhaar OTP.
- Note the claim ID and track it under Online Services > Track Claim Status.
03Which form for what
| Form | What it is for | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Form 19 | Final PF settlement after leaving service | Usually two months after exit; needs date of exit updated |
| Form 10C | Withdrawal of EPS pension contribution | Less than 10 years of pensionable service |
| Form 10D | Monthly pension | On or after 58, with 10 years or more service |
| Form 31 | Partial advance (illness, house, marriage, education, etc.) | Specific eligibility per the scheme paragraph |
For a job change, you usually transfer rather than withdraw, so the service is continuous for pension. Withdrawing fully resets that clock.
04How long it takes and tax
A clean online claim is generally settled within a few working days, and the money is credited to the KYC-verified bank account. On tax:
- Five years of continuous service (across transfers) makes the PF withdrawal tax-free.
- Below five years, the withdrawal is taxable, and TDS applies if the taxable amount crosses the threshold, higher without PAN.
Keep your PAN seeded. A missing PAN on a pre-five-year withdrawal leads to a much higher TDS deduction.

05Why claims get rejected and how to fix
Most rejections are data problems, not eligibility problems. The portal shows the exact remark under Track Claim Status. The common ones:
| Rejection remark | How to fix |
|---|---|
| Name / DOB / gender mismatch | File a joint declaration through the employer or the correction service on the portal, then re-claim |
| Bank KYC not verified or wrong IFSC | Re-seed the correct bank account and get the employer to approve KYC |
| Date of exit not updated | Update date of exit yourself on the portal (Manage > Mark Exit) or ask the employer |
| Aadhaar not linked / not verified | Seed and verify Aadhaar in KYC before claiming |
| Service less than required period | Wait for the eligibility date or choose the correct claim type |
| Signature / cheque image unclear | Re-upload a clear cancelled cheque or attested passbook |
Fix the flagged item first, then file a fresh claim. If the remark is wrong, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS at epfigms.gov.in with your claim ID and a short explanation.
06If EPFO wrongly refuses
If a grievance does not solve it and you believe the refusal is legally wrong, you have an escalation ladder:
- Regional PF Commissioner. Take the matter up in writing with the Regional Office handling your account.
- Statutory appeal. An order passed under the EPF and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952 (for example a determination under section 7A) can be appealed to the EPF Appellate Tribunal. The appellate work is handled through the Central Government Industrial Tribunal functioning as the Tribunal.
- High Court. Where no statutory appeal fits, or the delay itself is the wrong, a writ petition in the High Court is the usual remedy.
07Where Claw fits
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
A stuck PF claim is a portal problem until it is refused on principle, and then it becomes a legal matter before the EPF Appellate Tribunal or the High Court. That is where Claw helps. You can create a FREE Claw account and track the matter by party name or case number across the forum that hears it, since Claw covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, including the High Courts and tribunals. Its judgment search runs across 30 crore+ decisions, with Supreme Court rulings from 1950 and High Court rulings from 1990, so you and your lawyer can see how similar PF refusals were decided. Results return in under 5 seconds, and Claw does not use your case details or documents to train its AI models. For a routine rejection, the fix is on the EPFO portal; Claw is for the stage where it has become a dispute, and it does not replace advice from counsel.

09Frequently asked questions
How do I withdraw my PF online?
Log in to the EPFO Unified Member Portal with your UAN, open Online Services and the Claim form, verify your bank account, choose the claim type, and submit with an Aadhaar OTP. Track it under Track Claim Status using the claim ID.
Why was my PF claim rejected?
Most rejections are data mismatches: name, date of birth or gender not matching across UAN, Aadhaar and bank, unverified bank KYC or wrong IFSC, date of exit not updated, or Aadhaar not linked. The portal shows the exact remark; fix that item and file a fresh claim.
Can I withdraw PF immediately after leaving a job?
For a full and final settlement you normally have to wait two months after leaving, unless you are retiring or permanently moving abroad. If you are joining a new job, you usually transfer rather than withdraw so your service stays continuous for pension.
Is PF withdrawal taxable?
If you have five years of continuous service across transfers, the withdrawal is tax-free. Below five years it is taxable, and TDS is deducted if the taxable amount crosses the threshold, at a much higher rate if your PAN is not seeded.
What can I do if EPFO keeps refusing a valid claim?
First raise a grievance on EPFiGMS with your claim ID. If it is still wrongly refused, escalate to the Regional PF Commissioner, then use the statutory appeal to the EPF Appellate Tribunal, and if needed file a writ petition in the High Court.
What is the difference between Form 19 and Form 10C?
Form 19 is the final settlement of your provident fund balance. Form 10C is the withdrawal of your pension (EPS) contribution, available when you have less than 10 years of pensionable service. Both can be filed in the same online claim.
