How to Take an EPF Advance (and What If It Is Rejected)
An EPF advance is a partial withdrawal you can take while still employed, for specific reasons set out in the EPF Scheme, such as illness, buying or building a house, repaying a home loan, a wedding, education or certain emergencies. You claim it online through the EPFO Unified Member Portal using Form 31, and a clean claim is usually credited within a few working days. The amount you can take and the service you need depend on the reason. This page lists the reasons and limits, walks through the online steps, explains the timeline and tax position, sets out why advances get rejected and how to fix each one, and covers the appeal route if a valid claim is wrongly refused. 01What an advance is
An advance is not the same as a final settlement. You stay in service and keep your account; you only draw a part of the balance for an approved purpose. Because it is tied to a reason, Form 31 asks you to pick that reason, and the portal applies the limit and service condition for it automatically.
Most advances no longer need documentary proof uploaded, because the system uses a self-declaration, but the reason and your eligibility must still be correct.
02Reasons and limits
The main reasons and the broad limits are below. The scheme sets the exact figures, so treat these as the usual rule and confirm on the portal:
| Reason | Broad limit | Typical service needed |
|---|---|---|
| Illness (self or family) | Up to 6 months of basic wages plus DA, or your share with interest, whichever is less | No minimum |
| Buying / building a house or plot | A multiple of monthly wages up to a scheme cap | Usually 5 years |
| Home loan repayment | Up to a large share of the balance within the scheme cap | Usually 10 years |
| Marriage (self or family) | Up to 50% of your own share with interest | Usually 7 years |
| Education (self or children) | Up to 50% of your own share with interest | Usually 7 years |
| Before retirement | Up to 90% of the balance | After age 54 |
A separate non-refundable advance for certain emergencies may be available from time to time; check the current circular on the portal before you rely on it.

03How to claim online
- Log in at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in with your UAN and password, or use UMANG.
- Check that your KYC is verified (Aadhaar, PAN, bank).
- Open Online Services > Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D).
- Verify the last four digits of your bank account.
- Select PF Advance (Form 31), choose the purpose, enter the amount and your address.
- Submit with the Aadhaar OTP, and track it under Track Claim Status.
04Timeline and tax
A clean Form 31 advance is generally credited within a few working days to the verified bank account. On tax, an advance taken for a genuine scheme purpose while in service is generally not treated as a taxable withdrawal, but the position depends on the reason and your total service, so take advice for a large sum.
Remember that an advance reduces your retirement corpus and the compounding on it, so draw only what you need.
05Why advances get rejected and how to fix
The portal shows the exact rejection remark under Track Claim Status. The common ones and their fixes:
| Rejection remark | How to fix |
|---|---|
| KYC not verified | Seed and verify Aadhaar, PAN and bank, then re-claim |
| Service condition not met for the reason | Pick a reason you qualify for, or wait for eligibility |
| Amount exceeds the limit for the reason | Re-apply within the scheme limit shown on the portal |
| Name / DOB mismatch | File a joint declaration correction, then re-claim |
| Address or bank detail error | Correct the detail and re-submit |
| Recent advance for the same reason | Check the minimum gap before claiming again |
If the remark is plainly wrong, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS at epfigms.gov.in with your claim ID.
06If a valid claim is refused
If a grievance does not resolve a clearly valid claim, you can escalate:
- Regional PF Commissioner in writing, with the claim ID and your eligibility.
- Statutory appeal against an order under the EPF and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952 to the EPF Appellate Tribunal.
- High Court by writ petition where no statutory appeal fits or the delay itself is the wrong.
07Where Claw fits
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
A rejected advance is usually a data fix on the EPFO portal. But when a valid claim is refused on principle and the matter reaches the EPF Appellate Tribunal or the High Court, tracking it becomes useful. You can create a FREE Claw account and follow the matter by party name or case number across the forum that hears it, because Claw covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, including the High Courts and tribunals. Its judgment search runs across 30 crore+ decisions, with Supreme Court rulings from 1950 and High Court rulings from 1990, so you and your lawyer can see how similar EPF refusals were decided. Results return in under 5 seconds, and Claw does not use your case details or documents to train its AI models. Claw is for the dispute stage, and it is not a substitute for legal advice.

09Frequently asked questions
What reasons can I take an EPF advance for?
Illness of yourself or family, buying or building a house or plot, repaying a home loan, marriage, education, a period before retirement, and certain emergencies notified from time to time. Each reason has its own limit and service condition.
How do I apply for an advance online?
Log in to the EPFO member portal, open Online Services and the Claim form, verify your bank account, select PF Advance (Form 31), choose the purpose and amount, and submit with an Aadhaar OTP. Track it under Track Claim Status.
Do I need to upload documents?
For most reasons the claim now runs on a self-declaration without uploading proof, but your chosen reason and your eligibility must still be correct. A few purposes may still ask for a detail; the portal will prompt you.
Why was my advance rejected?
Usually KYC not verified, the service condition for the reason not met, an amount above the limit, a name or date of birth mismatch, or a wrong bank or address detail. The portal shows the exact remark; fix that and re-claim.
Is an EPF advance taxable?
An advance for a genuine scheme purpose while you are in service is generally not treated as a taxable withdrawal, but it depends on the reason and your total service. For a large sum, take tax advice before you claim.
What if a valid advance keeps getting refused?
Raise a grievance on EPFiGMS with your claim ID, escalate to the Regional PF Commissioner, and if an order under the EPF Act goes against you, use the statutory appeal to the EPF Appellate Tribunal, with a High Court writ as a backstop.
