How To File ITR U Online (India, 2026)

ITR-U is the updated return that lets you file a missed return, or fix one you already filed, after the normal deadlines have gone, by paying the tax due plus an additional amount. Filing it online on the income tax portal is straightforward once you have the numbers ready, but the order of steps matters: you compute, you pay, then you file. This guide walks through the online process end to end, from working out the extra tax to e-verifying so the return actually counts.

In short
  • Order: compute, pay, then file; ITR-U is not valid without the tax paid first.
  • One direction: ITR-U can only increase income and tax, never reduce tax, create a loss or claim a refund.
  • Additional tax: a percentage of tax plus interest that rises the later you file in the window.
  • Portal path: e-File, Income Tax Returns, then the updated return 139(8A) option.
  • Form: choose the ITR form that matches your income and state the reason for updating.
  • e-verify: verify within the time limit or the return is treated as not filed.

01Before you start: check you are eligible

ITR-U is allowed under section 139(8A) of the Income-tax Act, and it works in one direction only: you can use it to declare more income and pay more tax. You cannot use it to reduce income, claim or increase a refund, or create a loss.

  • It can be filed within an extended window measured from the end of the relevant assessment year.
  • It is not allowed where it would reduce your tax, or in certain cases tied to search, survey or ongoing proceedings.
  • If you are still within the belated or revised return window, those routes may be cheaper than ITR-U.

If a plain return within the normal window is still open to you, see ITR penalty after the due date before choosing ITR-U.

02Step 1: Compute the tax, interest and additional tax

ITR-U is a pay-first form, so you need the full amount before you file. Work out, in this order:

  1. The correct total income for the assessment year, including whatever you left out.
  2. The tax on that income, less any TDS, advance tax and tax already paid.
  3. The interest for late payment and late filing.
  4. The additional tax, which is a percentage of the tax plus interest, and which rises the later you file within the window.

Earlier is cheaper

The additional tax steps up the longer you wait. Filing earlier in the window costs a lower additional percentage than filing near the end, so if you know you need to file ITR-U, doing it sooner saves money.

03Step 2: Pay the tax online

Pay the full amount (tax, interest and additional tax) before you fill the form.

  1. Log in to the income tax portal at incometax.gov.in.
  2. Go to e-Pay Tax and create a challan for self-assessment tax for the relevant assessment year.
  3. Pay by net banking, card, UPI or at a bank, and save the challan with its reference number.

Keep the challan details handy, because you enter them in the ITR-U form. An updated return filed without the tax paid is not valid, so this step comes before the form.

04Step 3: Fill ITR-U on the portal

Now complete the return itself.

  1. On the portal, go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then File Income Tax Return.
  2. Select the assessment year and choose the updated return (139(8A)) option.
  3. Pick the ITR form that applies to your income (ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and so on); the right form is explained in the income tax return form online.
  4. State the reason for updating, for example income not reported earlier.
  5. Enter the income, the tax computation and the challan details of the tax you just paid.
  6. Check the ITR-U schedule, which shows the additional tax and the net amount payable.

Review the figures against your own computation before moving on, because corrections after submission mean another updated return, not a simple edit.

05Step 4: Submit and e-verify

Submission alone does not complete an ITR-U. You must e-verify it within the allowed time, or it is treated as not filed.

  • Submit the return on the portal.
  • e-verify using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or an electronic verification code (EVC).
  • Alternatively, send a signed ITR-V to the processing centre within the time allowed, though e-verification is faster.
An unverified return does not count. The most common reason an ITR-U "disappears" is that the taxpayer submitted it but never e-verified within the time limit.

06Common errors that get ITR-U rejected

A few mistakes repeatedly cause problems.

  • Filing without paying first. ITR-U needs the full tax, interest and additional tax paid before filing.
  • Using it to claim a refund or reduce tax. ITR-U can only increase income and tax, never reduce them.
  • Wrong additional-tax percentage. Using an old percentage when the figure has changed.
  • Choosing the wrong ITR form for the income being reported.
  • Not e-verifying within the time limit.

Because the numbers (income, interest and the additional-tax step) all have to line up, it is worth checking the computation carefully before you pay, since the payment drives the rest of the filing.

07How Claw Tax helps

Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.

If you simply missed a straightforward return and the numbers are clear, you can file ITR-U yourself on the government portal for free once you have paid the tax. Claw Tax is for getting the numbers right, because the cost of an updated return turns on the correct income, the interest, and the additional-tax percentage for your filing date, and on confirming that ITR-U is even the right route rather than a belated or revised return.

A verified chartered accountant from a network of 300+ partner CAs can compute the tax, interest and additional amount, pick the right form, file the updated return and e-verify it at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking it before submission. A free 20-minute call lets you explain your situation first. See the services and prices at clawlaw.in/tax.

This is general information, not tax advice; a verified CA handles the specifics of your case.

08Frequently asked questions

How do I file ITR-U online?

First compute the correct income, tax, interest and the additional tax. Pay the full amount through e-Pay Tax on incometax.gov.in and save the challan. Then go to e-File, Income Tax Returns, File Income Tax Return, select the assessment year and the updated return 139(8A) option, choose the right ITR form, state the reason for updating, enter the figures and challan details, submit and e-verify within the time limit.

Do I have to pay the tax before filing ITR-U?

Yes. ITR-U is a pay-first form. You compute the tax, interest and additional tax, pay the full amount as self-assessment tax and keep the challan, then enter those challan details while filing. An ITR-U filed without the tax paid is not valid, so payment always comes before the form on the portal.

Can I claim a refund through ITR-U?

No. ITR-U can only be used to declare more income and pay more tax. You cannot use it to claim or increase a refund, reduce your income, reduce your total tax, or create or increase a loss. If your correction would benefit you in those ways, ITR-U is not the right form, and you would need to look at a belated or revised return if the window is still open.

How much additional tax do I pay on ITR-U filed online?

On top of the tax and interest due, you pay an additional amount that is a percentage of that tax and interest, and the percentage rises in steps the later you file within the window. Because the slabs are set by law and have been revised, confirm the current percentage for your filing date on the portal before you pay, as filing earlier costs a lower additional percentage.

What if I forget to e-verify my ITR-U?

An ITR-U that is submitted but not e-verified within the allowed time is treated as not filed. After submitting, e-verify immediately using Aadhaar OTP, net banking or an EVC, or send a signed ITR-V to the processing centre within the time limit. e-verification is the faster and safer route and avoids the return lapsing for want of verification.

Which ITR form do I use for an updated return?

You use the ITR form that matches the income you are reporting, for example ITR-1 for simple salary and interest income or ITR-2 and ITR-3 for capital gains or business income, filed under the updated return 139(8A) option. Picking the wrong form is a common reason an updated return is rejected, so confirm the correct form for your income before filing.
