How to File a GSTR-1 Return

GSTR-1 is the invoice-level return in which a GST-registered seller reports all its outward supplies (sales) for a period: the invoices raised, credit and debit notes, exports and amendments. Unlike GSTR-3B, which pays the tax as a summary, GSTR-1 reports each invoice, and the data flows into your buyers' GSTR-2B as the input tax credit they can claim. That is why filing GSTR-1 accurately and on time matters not just to you but to every customer who depends on your invoices for their credit. This page shows you how to file GSTR-1 on the GST portal, what to report where, the due dates for monthly and QRMP taxpayers (and the IFF option), and what happens if a mismatch later leads to a demand and you need to appeal. 01What GSTR-1 is and why it matters

GSTR-1 reports your outward supplies invoice by invoice. It includes:

  • B2B invoices (to other registered persons), reported at invoice level.
  • B2C supplies, reported at invoice level above a threshold and otherwise summarised.
  • Exports and SEZ supplies, credit and debit notes, advances, and amendments to earlier periods.

The B2B data populates each buyer's GSTR-2B, which is the basis of their ITC. If you file wrong or late, your buyer's credit is wrong or delayed, so GSTR-1 accuracy is a commercial duty as much as a tax one.

02Before you file

  • Have your sales register for the period reconciled: every invoice, credit note and debit note.
  • Confirm the GSTIN of each B2B customer is correct, because a wrong GSTIN sends the credit to the wrong party.
  • Separate exports, SEZ and nil-rated supplies, which go in their own tables.
  • Keep the figures consistent with what you will declare in GSTR-3B for the same period.

A wrong customer GSTIN or a missed invoice is the usual reason a buyer calls to say their ITC is short. Fix it in the next GSTR-1 (or GSTR-1A) rather than leaving it.

03Step by step on the GST portal

  • Step 1. Log in at gst.gov.in, open the Returns Dashboard, and select the period and GSTR-1.
  • Step 2. Add invoices table by table (B2B, B2C large, B2C others, exports, credit/debit notes, advances), by direct entry, offline tool upload, or JSON from your accounting software.
  • Step 3. Generate the summary and check the totals against your sales register.
  • Step 4. Submit and file with DSC or EVC, then download the filed return and the ARN.

There is no tax payment at the GSTR-1 stage; the tax is paid through GSTR-3B. GSTR-1 is the reporting step that feeds it.

04Monthly, QRMP and the IFF

How often you file GSTR-1 depends on your turnover and your QRMP choice.

  • Monthly filers file GSTR-1 every month.
  • QRMP taxpayers (quarterly return, monthly payment, available below the turnover threshold) file GSTR-1 quarterly.
  • QRMP taxpayers can use the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) to upload B2B invoices in the first two months of a quarter, so their buyers get timely ITC without waiting for the quarterly GSTR-1.

05Due dates, late fee and GSTR-1A

TaxpayerGSTR-1 frequencyUsual due date
Monthly filerMonthly11th of the following month
QRMP (quarterly)Quarterly13th of the month after the quarter
IFF (QRMP, optional)First two months of quarter13th of the following month

Late filing attracts a late fee. An amendment facility (GSTR-1A) lets you correct or add records for a period before you file GSTR-3B for it, which helps fix a wrong invoice quickly. [VERIFY current late-fee amounts and the GSTR-1A availability window against the latest CBIC notification.]

06Common errors to avoid

  • Wrong buyer GSTIN. Sends ITC to the wrong party; correct it by amendment.
  • Invoice in the wrong table. B2B shown as B2C hides it from the buyer's 2B.
  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B out of step. The outward tax should reconcile across both for the period.
  • Missed credit notes. Leaving out a credit note overstates your liability and the buyer's credit.

Keep the filed GSTR-1, the sales register and every amendment, with dates, for each period, as evidence if a figure is later questioned.

07If a mismatch leads to a demand: appeal chain and Claw

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

GSTR-1 is a reporting return, but a mismatch between GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and your buyers' claims can lead the department to a scrutiny and a demand under section 73 or 74 of the CGST Act. If you disagree, there is a clear appeal chain: first appeal to the Appellate Authority under section 107 (with the required pre-deposit), then the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) under section 112, then the High Court on a substantial question of law, and finally the Supreme Court. GSTAT now has a Principal Bench in New Delhi and State Benches.

Once your matter is before the Appellate Authority, GSTAT, a High Court or the Supreme Court, you can create a FREE Claw account and track it by case number or party name, and look up how similar GST points were decided. Claw spans 9,102 courts, benches and forums, searches 30 crore+ judgments (Supreme Court from 1950, High Courts from 1990) and returns results in under 5 seconds, and it does not train on your documents. Tracking shows what is on the cause list and order sheet on the forums and date searched; it is information to stay on top of your case, not legal advice, so use it with your tax counsel.

09Frequently asked questions

How do I file GSTR-1 on the GST portal?

Log in at gst.gov.in, open the Returns Dashboard, select the period and GSTR-1, add invoices in each table by entry, offline tool or JSON upload, generate the summary, check it against your sales register, and file with DSC or EVC. No tax is paid at this stage.

What is the GSTR-1 due date?

Monthly filers file by the 11th of the following month. QRMP taxpayers file quarterly by the 13th of the month after the quarter, and can use the IFF to upload B2B invoices by the 13th in the first two months of a quarter.

What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?

GSTR-1 reports your outward supplies invoice by invoice and feeds your buyers' ITC. GSTR-3B is the summary return that computes and pays the tax. Both are filed for each period and should reconcile with each other.

I entered a wrong customer GSTIN. How do I correct it?

Correct it by amendment. You can use the GSTR-1A amendment facility for the period before filing GSTR-3B, or amend in a later GSTR-1. A wrong GSTIN sends your buyer's ITC to the wrong party, so fix it promptly.

Does late GSTR-1 affect my buyers?

Yes. Your B2B invoices feed each buyer's GSTR-2B, so late or wrong GSTR-1 delays or reduces their input tax credit. QRMP sellers can use the IFF so buyers get timely credit without waiting for the quarterly return.

Can I track a GST demand or appeal online?

Yes. Once a GST matter is before the Appellate Authority, GSTAT, a High Court or the Supreme Court, you can follow it by case number or party name and research similar rulings. A free Claw account lets you track the next date and order sheet across courts and tribunals in one place.
