EPF Claim Status and PF Balance: How to Check Online (UAN, Passbook, SMS, 2026)
How to check your EPF claim status and PF balance using your UAN, the passbook portal, the UMANG app, SMS or a missed call, what each status means, and what to do if your claim is rejected.
How-To Guide · EPF and PF
You applied for your PF money, weeks have passed, and you still do not know where the claim stands. Or you simply want to know your PF balance and cannot find it. You can check your EPF claim status and PF balance online using your UAN on the EPFO member portal, the passbook portal, the UMANG app, or by SMS or missed call from your registered mobile number. Each claim shows one of three main statuses: under process, settled or rejected. If a claim is wrongly rejected or an employer defaults, you can escalate it and track the matter in Claw.
- Check claim status: log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN and use Track Claim Status under Online Services.
- Check PF balance: use the passbook portal, the UMANG app, an SMS to 7738299899 (EPFOHO UAN ENG) or a missed call to 9966044425.
- Three statuses: under process, settled and rejected. Always read the remark.
- If rejected: fix the mismatch and refile, or raise a grievance. Disputes can be tracked in Claw.
01Why people get stuck when they check PF
Most people check their PF only when they need the money. That is exactly when small errors show up and cause delay.
The claim looks stuck
A claim can sit under process for days. The portal shows a status, but it does not always say clearly who is holding it up, you, your employer, or the EPFO office.
The balance does not match
Your passbook may show fewer contributions than you expect. Common causes are a missing employer deposit, a wrong name or date of birth, or an old member ID that was never merged with your current one.
Rejection reasons are short
A rejected claim usually carries a brief remark. Many rejections come from simple mismatches between Aadhaar, bank and EPF records, and they can be fixed once you know the cause.
Checking your status is easy. Understanding what the status is telling you is the part that saves weeks.
02What you need before you check
You need three things ready before any online check works smoothly.
- An active UAN: your Universal Account Number, which stays the same across all jobs.
- A registered mobile number: the number linked to your UAN. OTPs, SMS replies and missed-call replies go only to this number.
- Linked KYC: at least one of Aadhaar, PAN or bank account should be seeded against your UAN.
If you have lost your password, use the forgot password option on the member portal. If you have never activated your UAN, do that first on the same portal.

03Steps to check your EPF claim status online
The most complete way to check a claim is the EPFO member portal.
Method 1: EPFO member portal
- Open the EPFO member portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
- Enter your UAN, password and captcha, then log in.
- Go to Online Services and select Track Claim Status.
- Check the claim type, the date it was submitted, its current status and any remark.
Method 2: UMANG app
Install the UMANG app, or use web.umang.gov.in, and register with your mobile number. Open the EPFO service, choose Track Claim, and sign in with your UAN and OTP. You can also view your passbook from the same service.
Method 3: SMS
From your registered mobile number, send an SMS in this format to 7738299899:
EPFOHO UAN ENG
Replace UAN with your own number. ENG asks for a reply in English. You can change the last three letters to another language code, for example HIN for Hindi. The reply gives your latest PF details.
Method 4: Missed call
Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number. The call ends after a couple of rings, so it is free, and you receive an SMS with your details.
You can also call the EPFO helpline on 1800 118 005.
04Steps to check your PF balance and passbook
Your PF balance is best read from the EPF passbook, which lists every contribution month by month.
- Open the passbook portal at passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
- Log in with your UAN, password and captcha.
- Select your member ID if you have worked with more than one employer.
- View or download the passbook as a PDF.
Read three columns with care: your own contribution, your employer share, and the pension (EPS) part. The EPS part is not part of your PF balance in the same way, so do not be alarmed if the employer figure looks lower than your own.
For a quick check without logging in, use the missed call or SMS methods above. They give a short balance summary, but the passbook shows the full detail you need to spot a missing deposit.
05What each EPF claim status means
A claim status is a simple label, but each one has a clear meaning and a next step.
| Status | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Under process | Your claim is received and is being checked by the employer or the EPFO office. | Wait for the normal processing time, then check again. If it stays unchanged for long, raise a grievance. |
| Settled | The claim is approved and the money has been released to your linked bank account. | Check your bank statement. If the amount does not arrive, note the claim number and contact EPFO. |
| Rejected | The claim was refused, usually because of a mismatch, missing detail or ineligibility. | Read the remark, fix the cause and file again, or challenge the rejection if it is wrong. |
Treat the status as a snapshot. Always read the remark beside it, because the remark tells you the actual reason.
06What to do if your PF claim is rejected
A rejected claim is not final. Start with the cause, then pick the right route.
- Read the remark. Note the exact reason given on the portal.
- Fix common mismatches. Check that your name, date of birth, Aadhaar, PAN and bank details match across records. Ask your employer to correct EPF records if needed through a joint declaration.
- File again. After the fix, submit a fresh claim.
- Raise a grievance. If the rejection looks wrong, or the claim is stuck, file on the EPFO grievance portal at epfigms.gov.in and keep the registration number.
- Escalate further. If the grievance fails, you may approach the Regional PF Commissioner, and for disputes about employer default or dues, the formal legal route under the EPF Act.
When it becomes a dispute
Some problems are not clerical. An employer may not deposit contributions, or a rejection may be unjust. These can turn into formal proceedings and hearings. Keep your passbook, claim screenshots and all replies, because they become your evidence.
Disputes of this kind sometimes sit alongside other records checks. For related background, see our notes on litigation checks in tenant screening and how a status check works for trademarks, and for organisations managing many such matters, litigation management software.
07Where Claw fits
For a simple status or balance check, you do not need Claw. The EPFO portals above are the right tool and are free.
Claw becomes useful only when a PF problem turns into a dispute or a case. Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
If a rejected claim or an employer default is escalated to an authority or a court, you can track the matter in Claw, with hearing dates, cause lists and alerts by WhatsApp and email, so you do not miss a date. Claw has a free plan for individual advocates, and paid plans for teams. Learn more at clawlaw.in.
