Documents Required For Change Of Name In PAN Card (India, 2026)

Changing a name on a PAN card is a common request, after marriage, after a legal name change, or to fix a spelling or father-name error that has been there since the card was issued. The process is a PAN correction request, and the key is attaching the right proof. This guide lists the documents required for a change of name in a PAN card, including the special case of a name correction and the papers needed for a partnership firm PAN.

Quick reference
  • Three families: every PAN correction needs identity, address and date of birth proof.
  • Name change needs extra proof: a marriage certificate, gazette notification or passport showing the new name.
  • Father name correction: use a birth certificate or matriculation certificate showing the correct father name.
  • Partnership firm PAN: needs the partnership deed or Registrar of Firms certificate plus office address proof.
  • Tick only what changes: select just the name field in the correction form to avoid delays.
  • Match Aadhaar: keep names and dates consistent to avoid rejection and later linking issues.

01The three document families

Every PAN correction draws from three families of document: proof of identity, proof of address, and proof of date of birth. On top of these, a name change needs one extra document that proves the new name.

Aadhaar is the most convenient because it can serve as identity, address and date of birth proof in one. But Aadhaar alone does not prove a change of name, so you still need the supporting document that records the new name.

Name change vs name correction

A name change (for example after marriage) needs proof that the name legally changed. A name correction (fixing a spelling or a wrong father name entered during the original application) needs proof of the correct name, such as Aadhaar or a matriculation certificate showing the right spelling.

02Documents for a name change

For a genuine change of name, such as after marriage or a legal name change, attach one of:

  • Marriage certificate or a marriage invitation card, for a name change after marriage.
  • Gazette notification of the name change, for a legal name change.
  • Passport or Aadhaar showing the new name.
  • A certificate from a gazetted officer in the prescribed form, where accepted.

Along with the name-proof document, keep your standard identity, address and date of birth proof ready. For the online mechanics, see the guide to updating a PAN online.

03Documents for a father name correction

A wrong father name is usually a data entry error from the original application. To correct it, you generally need a document that shows the correct father name, such as:

  • the applicant's birth certificate,
  • a matriculation (class 10) certificate that records the father name, or
  • the father's identity document read with the applicant's, where the service provider accepts it.

Note that a PAN card can be set to display either the father name or the mother name. If you are correcting which parent name is shown, indicate that in the form.

04Documents for a partnership firm PAN

A partnership firm has its own PAN, separate from the partners. The documents required for a partnership firm PAN are different from an individual's:

  • a copy of the partnership deed, or
  • the certificate of registration issued by the Registrar of Firms, where the firm is registered, and
  • proof of the firm's office address.

The application is signed by a partner on behalf of the firm. If the firm name on the PAN needs to change later (for example after the deed is amended), the amended deed is the supporting proof.

05Full document list at a glance

A quick summary of which document covers which need:

PurposeDocuments commonly accepted
Proof of identityAadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence
Proof of addressAadhaar, passport, bank statement, utility bill
Proof of date of birthBirth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport
Proof of name changeMarriage certificate, gazette notification, passport with new name
Partnership firmPartnership deed or Registrar of Firms certificate, plus office address proof

Keep names and dates consistent across documents, because a mismatch with Aadhaar is the main reason corrections stall, and it can later block PAN-Aadhaar linking.

06How to submit the correction

Apply through Protean (formerly NSDL) at protean-tinpan.com or UTIITSL at pan.utiitsl.com, choose "Changes or Correction in existing PAN data", tick only the fields you are changing, enter the corrected details, upload the proofs, pay the fee and submit. Save the acknowledgement number to track it.

Only tick the name field (and any other field you are actually correcting). Ticking extra fields invites questions and delays.

07How Claw Tax helps

Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.

Correcting a name on a PAN is a do-it-yourself task on the Protean or UTIITSL site, and most people manage it. Claw is worth it when a mismatch keeps getting your request rejected, when a firm PAN or father-name correction has become complicated, or when you want the PAN record cleaned up so your return and refunds go through without a name mismatch.

With Claw Tax and Accounts, a verified chartered accountant can file the PAN correction correctly, align your PAN, Aadhaar and bank names, and handle the related tax work, at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking it.

This is not tax advice; a verified CA handles your specifics.

08Frequently asked questions

What documents are required to change a name on a PAN card?

You need your standard identity, address and date of birth proof, plus one document that proves the new name. For a name change after marriage that is usually a marriage certificate; for a legal name change it is a gazette notification; a passport or Aadhaar showing the new name also works.

What documents are needed for a father name correction in a PAN card?

To correct a father name that was entered wrongly, you generally need a document showing the correct name, such as your birth certificate or your matriculation (class 10) certificate that records the father name. Indicate the correction clearly in the form and tick only that field.

What documents are required for a partnership firm PAN?

A partnership firm PAN needs a copy of the partnership deed or the certificate of registration from the Registrar of Firms, along with proof of the firm's office address. A partner signs the application on behalf of the firm.

Can I change my PAN name using only Aadhaar?

Aadhaar can serve as identity, address and date of birth proof, but it does not by itself prove that your name legally changed. For a name change you still need a document recording the new name, such as a marriage certificate or gazette notification. For a simple spelling correction, Aadhaar showing the correct name can be enough.

How do I submit the name change request?

Apply on the Protean or UTIITSL website under "Changes or Correction in existing PAN data", tick only the name field, enter the corrected name, upload the proofs, pay the processing fee and submit. Keep the acknowledgement number to track the request.

Why does a name mismatch matter for my PAN?

A mismatch between the name on your PAN, Aadhaar and bank records is the main reason corrections stall and can block PAN-Aadhaar linking and delay tax refunds. Keeping the name consistent across all three avoids these problems when you file your return.
