How to keep registered designs and Geographical Indications (GI) from lapsing, what a good tracking tool must do for them, and how the main options compare, with dated prices. Last verified October 2026.

Buyer’s Guide · Designs and GI Portfolios

A registered design or a Geographical Indication is a small asset with a hard date attached. If a design is not renewed on time, or a GI authorised user is not renewed or removed on time, the right can be lost or a record can go stale, and generic docketing tools often treat these as an afterthought. This guide is about software for managing a design and GI portfolio in India. It explains what goes wrong, what a good tool must do, and how the main options compare, with every price dated and sourced. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Specialist IP-firm docketing in India: JSK IP Suite, with published INR prices and design and GI named on its site.
  • US or Canada first: Alt Legal ($60 to $295 per month, docketing only, April 2026 page) or AppColl (from $100 per user per month).
  • Global annuities: Anaqua, Clarivate or Dennemeyer, on quote.
  • India-first, registry plus court in one place: Claw, bundled in Premium at Rs 1,099 per month or Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST.
  • Check before you buy: how the tool handles GI authorised user expiry.

01Why designs and GIs get missed

Designs and GIs are the quiet corner of an Indian IP portfolio, and that is exactly why they are missed. Most docketing tools were built around patents and trademarks first.

Designs run on a short, fixed clock

Under the Designs Act, 2000, a registered design is protected for an initial period that can be extended once. Missing the extension window can end protection for a product that is still selling. A portfolio of dozens of designs across product lines makes this easy to lose track of in a spreadsheet.

GIs involve many people, not one owner

A Geographical Indication is registered with the GI Registry at Chennai, and the benefit flows to producers who are registered as authorised users. Each authorised user adds a record with its own dates. A single GI can carry hundreds of these records, and a tracker built for one owner and one mark does not fit that shape well.

Disputes surface in court and at the registry

Designs also face cancellation petitions and infringement suits. If you only watch the registry, you can miss a suit filed against your design in a High Court. For the cancellation ground itself, see our explainer on design cancellation under Section 19 in India.

Scope of this guide

This guide is about designs and GIs only. For trademark portfolio costs, see our year-one cost comparison for 500 trademarks in India. For patent responses, see AI patent FER drafting and its limits.

02What good design and GI software looks like

For a design and GI portfolio, five things separate a useful tool from a generic one.

  • Design and GI as real record types: not only trademarks and patents with a renamed field. Dates, status and owner need to be tracked for each.
  • Deadline alerts you can trust: renewal and response dates should be calculated and reminded by the system, not typed in by hand.
  • Authorised user handling for GIs: one GI, many users, each with its own validity.
  • Court visibility: a way to see whether a case has been filed against, or about, your design.
  • A price you can verify: published, dated, with GST status stated.
A design or GI right is rarely lost in a dramatic way. It is lost quietly, on a date nobody was reminded about.

Note what we did not put on the list: global filing coverage. Most Indian design and GI owners file only in India. If you file abroad as well, the specialists below are the better fit.

03The options compared

This is not a ranked list. The right tool depends on whether you are an IP law firm, an in-house team, or a producer body. Each option below is described for the job it does best. Prices were read from each vendor’s own page in October 2026 and can change.

1

JSK IP Suite

Low-cost Indian IP docketing built for IP law firms, listing design and GI among its modules.

Strengths
  • Built for IP law firms in India. Its site lists trademark, patent, copyright, industrial design and Geographical Indication management.
  • Published INR prices, with a one-time hosted licence option and a cloud option priced per record per year.
  • A strong fit for high-volume specialist IP-firm docketing.
Keep in mind
  • Registry-side docketing. It is not a court research or litigation tool.
  • Its pricing page lists the design module in all packages, but the per-record rates shown cover trademark, patent, copyright and design. GI pricing is not shown on that page.
  • GST is added on top of the listed prices.

Best for IP law firms that want inexpensive, India-focused docketing at volume.

2

Alt Legal

US-built docketing and trademark watch, with a very large set of IP office databases.

Strengths
  • Published tiers by number of matters, from $60 to $295 per month for docketing alone (April 2026 page).
  • Unlimited users and a claim of 180+ IP office databases.
  • Strong when your work is USPTO or CIPO first.
Keep in mind
  • Its pricing page describes coverage of trademarks and patents. Designs and GIs in India are not named there.
  • Prices are in US dollars. Whether Indian GST or reverse-charge applies depends on the buyer.

Best for Teams whose portfolio is mainly US or Canadian, with a few Indian matters.

3

AppColl

US-focused prosecution manager with auto docketing for US patents and trademarks.

Strengths
  • Subscription from $100 per user per month on its PM Pro plan, monthly billing, no long contract.
  • Good workflow, billing and document features for a US practice.
Keep in mind
  • Its auto docketing is described for US patents and trademarks. It is not built around Indian designs or GIs.
  • Priced per user in US dollars.

Best for US-based practices.

4

Anaqua, Clarivate and Dennemeyer

Enterprise IP management and global renewals providers.

Strengths
  • Global multi-jurisdiction docketing and annuity or renewal payments.
  • Built for large portfolios filed in many countries.
Keep in mind
  • Priced on quote, so there is no public number to compare.
  • More system than a small Indian design or GI portfolio needs.

Best for Multinational owners with portfolios in many countries.

5

Claw

An India-first platform that tracks the registry side and the court side together.

Strengths
  • Its IPR Solutions tab tracks IP India registry matters across trademarks, patents, designs and Geographical Indications, with pending compliances, hearings, documents and tasks.
  • Also tracks IP litigation in every Indian court with a case website, including High Court IP Divisions.
  • IP is bundled in the Premium plan at Rs 1,099 per month (Rs 10,999 per year), excluding GST.
Keep in mind
  • No separate IP-only plan. You buy the full Premium or Enterprise plan.
  • It does not replace global annuity providers, very-high-volume IP-firm docketing, or AI prior-art and structure search tools.
  • Claw does not yet track copyright registration at the Copyright Office. For copyright it is court-side only.

Best for Indian owners and firms who want registry and court visibility for designs and GIs in one place.

Each price below was read from the vendor’s own page in October 2026. Prices are not comparable like for like, because the units differ (per matter band, per user, per record). Treat this as a map, not a ranking.

Sources: Alt Legal pricing page (page content dated April 2026), AppColl pricing listings, JSK IP Suite pricing page, clawlaw.in pricing. The Alt Legal row will look cheap. It is docketing only and mostly for US and Canadian work, so it solves a different problem.

05The GI authorised-user expiry row

The deadline that most tools miss is not the GI itself. It is the authorised user record underneath it. A GI is registered for a fixed term and can be renewed. Producers are registered as authorised users, and each has its own registration and its own dates.

What to check in any toolWhy it matters
Can one GI hold many authorised user records?A real GI often has many producers, each registered separately.
Does each authorised user have its own expiry date?Their validity is not the same as the GI’s own date.
Will it alert before the date, to the right person? The producer body or the agent who files for them needs the reminder.
Is the cost per record or flat?Per-record pricing can grow fast with hundreds of authorised users.

Ask every vendor to show you this on a live example before you buy. Where a vendor does not name GIs on its price page, treat GI support as unconfirmed until it is shown to you.

06How to choose

Match the tool to who you are and where your rights are filed.

If you are an IP law firm with high volume, a specialist docketing tool such as JSK IP Suite is built for that job and is priced for it. If your portfolio is mostly in the US or Canada, Alt Legal or AppColl fit better. If you file in many countries and pay annuities globally, Anaqua, Clarivate or Dennemeyer are the safer choice. If you are an Indian owner or in-house team who wants registry deadlines and court cases in one place at a published price, an India-first all-in-one platform is worth a trial.

If you also need to find prior art or check design novelty by image, those are separate tools (PatSnap, Questel, IPRally and similar). For marketplace takedowns at scale, look at Red Points or Corsearch. For university technology transfer, look at Wellspring or Inteum. None of these are replaced by a docketing tool.

07Where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

For designs and GIs, Claw’s IPR Solutions tab tracks IP India registry matters across trademarks, patents, designs and Geographical Indications. It lists pending compliances, pending hearings, and related documents, tasks and activities. Alongside that, Claw tracks IP litigation across every Indian court that has a case website, including the High Court IP Divisions, and offers judgment research over 30 crore+ judgments through LegalGPT. It covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, with Supreme Court coverage from 1950 and High Court coverage from 1990.

The honest limits are clear. Claw is not a global annuity service, not a very-high-volume IP-firm docketing system, and not an AI prior-art search tool. It does not yet track copyright registration. Its value is breadth for an Indian owner: registry and court in one place, with IP bundled into the Premium plan at Rs 1,099 per month or Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST. The Rs 250 to Rs 750 per-search litigation search is a separate product and does not apply to IP tracking. Claw does not use customer case documents to train AI models. 09Frequently asked questions

What is the best software for a design or GI portfolio in India?

It depends on who you are. IP law firms with high volume are well served by specialist docketing such as JSK IP Suite. Indian owners who want registry deadlines and court visibility together can look at Claw. Multinationals with global filings should consider Anaqua, Clarivate or Dennemeyer.

How much does design and GI software cost?

Alt Legal lists $60 to $295 per month for docketing (April 2026 page). AppColl starts from $100 per user per month. JSK IP Suite lists cloud pricing from Rs 30,000 per year minimum plus GST. Claw bundles IP in Premium at Rs 1,099 per month or Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST. Units differ, so confirm each price with the vendor.

Does Claw track Geographical Indications?

Yes. Claw's IPR Solutions tab tracks IP India registry matters across trademarks, patents, designs and Geographical Indications, and also tracks IP cases in Indian courts. Ask for a live demo of how GI records and authorised users are handled.

Does Claw track copyright registrations?

No, not yet. Claw does not track registrations at the Copyright Office. For copyright it is court-side only, meaning case and judgment tracking.

Is there an IP-only plan on Claw?

No. IP is bundled into the Premium plan (Rs 1,099 per month, Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST) and Enterprise. The per-search litigation product is separate and does not apply to IP.

Why not just use a spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet works for a handful of designs. It fails when dates multiply, when many GI authorised users each have their own expiry, or when a court case is filed against your design and nobody is watching. A tool with alerts removes that risk.
