Claw vs Clarivate IPfolio for India
Clarivate IPfolio and Claw solve different IP jobs. This page explains the difference, where each is the better choice for an Indian team, and who should buy neither.
Comparison · IP Management · Last verified October 2026
An Indian company that owns trademarks, patents or designs has two very different IP problems. One is keeping the portfolio in order: deadlines, renewals, journal conflicts and hearings at IP India. The other is staying on top of IP disputes that move through the courts. Clarivate IPfolio and Claw are often placed side by side, but they were built for different jobs. This page sets out the difference in plain terms, so you can decide which job you actually need done. Last verified October 2026.
- Different jobs: IPfolio manages global enterprise IP portfolios. Claw tracks India IP at the registry and in the courts.
- Global enterprise IPMS: Clarivate IPfolio is the stronger fit, with 200+ clients stated by Clarivate.
- India all-in-one: Claw covers IP India (trademarks, patents, designs, GI) and 9,102 courts and forums with 30 crore+ judgments.
- Price route: IPfolio is quote-based. Claw IP is in Premium at Rs 10,999 per year excluding GST, or Enterprise on quote.
- Not for: copyright registration tracking or global multi-country docketing with Claw.
01Two jobs, not one: managing a portfolio and following the disputes
Managing intellectual property in India is two jobs that look like one. The first job is the portfolio: knowing what you own, what is due, and what is under threat at the registry. The second is the dispute: knowing which infringement and passing off cases are live, who is suing whom, and what the court said last week.
The registry side
At IP India, marks are published in the Trade Marks Journal. A similar mark that is published can hurt your brand, and the window to act is short. Renewals, patent annuities and replies to examination reports all carry deadlines. Miss one and rights can lapse. Most IP teams track this in a docketing system or, too often, a spreadsheet.
The court side
IP disputes in India are heard in the High Courts, and several have dedicated IP Divisions, with Delhi being the best known. Cases are filed under their own case-type codes, for example C.O.(COMM.IPD-TM) for a trademark rectification matter in the Delhi High Court IP Division. A competitor can sue a third party for copying a mark that is close to yours. You may want to know, because the order can shape your own position.
Why one tool rarely covers both
Global IP management systems grew up around patent offices and trademark registries in many countries. Court data tools grew up around judgments and cause lists. Few products sit properly in both worlds, and the gap shows up when an Indian brand owner asks a simple question: is anyone filing a similar mark, and is anyone fighting over it in court?
IP in India is two jobs: keeping the registry portfolio in order, and following the court disputes. Most tools are built for one of them.
02What an Indian IP team really needs from software
The right IP software is the one that matches the work your team does every week. Five checks help.
- Jurisdiction mix: is your portfolio mostly India, or spread over many countries? A global portfolio needs global docketing and annuity handling.
- Registry monitoring: does it watch the Trade Marks Journal for conflicting marks, and does it match on text, sound and look?
- Deadlines: does it track trademark renewals, patent annuities and response dates in one place?
- Court visibility: can it follow IP cases and hearings in the High Court IP Divisions and other Indian courts?
- Price and buying route: is the price public, or do you need a sales call and a quote?
Be honest about the first point. A portfolio with filings in the US, Europe, Japan and India is a different problem from a portfolio that is almost all India. Many comparison pages skip this, and it is the question that decides most purchases.
03Clarivate IPfolio in detail
Clarivate IPfolio is a configurable IP management platform aimed at corporate IP teams, and it is a strong choice for global enterprise portfolios. Clarivate describes it as end-to-end IP portfolio management software, and states that over 200 clients have onboarded.
Clarivate IPfolio
Configurable, end-to-end IP portfolio management for corporate IP teams, from a global IP and data company.
Strengths
- Built for enterprise corporate IP departments, with configurable workflows across the IP lifecycle.
- Backed by Clarivate, which also sells IP data, search and renewals services, so it can sit inside a wider global IP stack.
- Clarivate states that over 200 clients have onboarded, a sign of real enterprise use.
- A natural fit where the portfolio spans many countries and annuity and docketing handling must be global.
Keep in mind
- It is an enterprise product with a sales-led buying route. Pricing is not published on the product page.
- Its strength is portfolio management, not following Indian court litigation case by case across 9,102 courts and forums.
- Implementation is typically a project, so it suits teams with the budget and time for one.
Best for Large corporate IP teams with a global portfolio that need a configurable enterprise system.
To be fair to IPfolio, the number that matters most is the one Clarivate itself cites: more than 200 clients. That is a real base of enterprise users. Set it next to the scale of Indian court data: 9,102 courts, benches and forums, and over 30 crore judgments. They measure different things. One counts customers of a portfolio system. The other counts the court records an IP team may need to search.
04Side-by-side comparison
The table shows different jobs, and no row is a clean win for either side.
| Question | Clarivate IPfolio | Claw |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | Enterprise IP portfolio management | All-in-one India IP: registry tracking plus court tracking plus AI research |
| Global multi-country docketing and annuities | Strong fit (enterprise, global) | Not its job. Use a global specialist |
| India trademark journal monitoring (text, phonetic, visual) | Confirm with Clarivate | Yes, with alerts |
| India trademark renewals and patent annuity or response deadlines | Confirm India coverage with Clarivate | Yes, in the IPR Solutions tab |
| Patents, designs, GI at IP India | Confirm with Clarivate | Trademarks, patents, designs and GI |
| IP litigation across Indian courts | Not its core job | Yes, including Delhi IPD by case-type code and by court, number or party |
| IP judgment research | Not its core job | 30 crore+ judgments, LegalGPT |
| Copyright registration tracking | Confirm with Clarivate | No. Court side only for copyright |
| Buying route | Sales-led, quote-based | Public plans; IP is inside Premium and Enterprise |
Read the table by job. If the global docketing row decides your purchase, IPfolio leads. If the India registry plus court rows decide it, Claw leads. Neither wins every row.
05What it costs
The two products are bought in very different ways, so the honest comparison is about buying route, not a single number.
- Clarivate IPfolio: Clarivate does not publish a price on its IPfolio page. It is quote-based and sales-led. See the IPfolio product page (retrieved October 2026). GST status: not stated, because no price is published.
- Claw: IP tracking is bundled into the Premium plan at Rs 1,099 per month or Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST, and into Enterprise on quote. There is no IP-only plan. See clawlaw.in/price (retrieved October 2026). Claw also has a free plan for individual advocates, and no free tier for enterprises or teams.
An enterprise system and a bundled subscription are not priced on the same basis, so do not treat these as like for like. An enterprise rollout usually includes configuration and onboarding. A bundled plan gives a fixed cost per seat. Ask each vendor for a written scope before you compare totals.
06Who should NOT buy Claw
Claw is the wrong choice for some IP teams, and it is better to say so plainly. Look elsewhere if you are in one of these groups.
- Global portfolio owners. If your docketing and annuities run across many countries, choose a global specialist such as Anaqua, Clarivate or Dennemeyer.
- Very high volume IP firms. A firm that files thousands of matters a month and needs deep specialist docketing is better served by tools like Iolite or JSK.
- US or Canada first filers. If your main offices are USPTO or CIPO, Alt Legal is built for that.
- Prior-art and structure search users. For deep AI patent prior-art search, look at PatSnap, Questel or IPRally.
- Marketplace takedown teams. For mass takedowns on online marketplaces, look at Red Points or Corsearch.
- University and tech transfer offices. For tech transfer lifecycle work, tools like Wellspring or Inteum fit better.
- Copyright registration trackers. Claw does not yet track the Copyright Office. For copyright it covers court cases only.
A clear boundary
Claw does not try to replace a global IP management system. It is for teams whose IP work is mainly in India.
07How to choose
Choose by where your IP lives and which job is hurting most.
If your portfolio is global and run by a large IP department, an enterprise system like IPfolio is the safe choice. If your IP is mainly in India and you want the registry and the courts in one place, an India-first all-in-one tool fits. If you only need a brand watch, a standalone watch service may be enough.
Before you decide, test any tool on your own marks. Pick five marks you own, run them through a trial, and check whether it finds a similar mark you already know about. Do not accept an accuracy claim without the sample size and test date.

08Where Claw fits
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
For IP, Claw covers both sides in one platform. Its IPR Solutions tab tracks IP India matters across trademarks, patents, designs and geographical indications. It watches the Trade Marks Journal for conflicting marks using text, phonetic and visual matching, and alerts you. It lists pending compliances, including trademark renewals and patent annuity and response deadlines, plus pending hearings from trademark and patent filings, with related documents, tasks and activities.
On the court side, Claw tracks IP litigation across every Indian court with a case website, including party-name infringement discovery, the High Court IP Divisions (Delhi IPD by case-type code, and by court plus number or party), and IPD hearings, orders and cause lists. IP judgment research runs over 30 crore+ judgments with LegalGPT. Claw covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, with the Supreme Court from 1950 and High Courts from 1990, over 1.5 billion+ records, and search results in under 5 seconds.
It does not do everything. It does not track copyright registration, and it concedes global multi-country docketing to specialists. For India-focused IP work that needs the registry and the courts together, at a price that is public, Claw is a strong all-in-one choice. Claw does not use customer case documents to train AI models. For wider context, see IP software for in-house teams in India.
