01How to check CESTAT case status online

To check CESTAT case status online, open the case status page on the official CESTAT website, cestat.gov.in/casestatus. Select the bench, then search by appeal number, diary number or party name, and enter the captcha. The result shows the current status and next hearing date. CESTAT hears customs, excise and service tax appeals.

The primary source for CESTAT case status is the tribunal’s own website, cestat.gov.in. The case status search sits on the case status page. CESTAT is the appellate tribunal for customs, central excise and service tax appeals, and it sits in nine places, so the first thing the portal asks is the bench. Follow these steps for a quick CESTAT case status check.

1. Open the case status page. Go to cestat.gov.in and open Case Status.
2. Select the bench. Choose the city where the appeal was filed. There is no single box that searches all benches on the official site, so the bench matters.
3. Choose the search type. The portal lets you search by diary number, case number, party name, or the Order-in-Original or Order-in-Appeal number.
4. Enter the details. For a number search, type the number and year. For a party name search, type the appellant or respondent name. Then enter the captcha.
5. Open the result. The result list shows party names, diary number and case number. Open the one you want to see its details, status and next hearing date.
6. Check the cause list. If you want to know whether the matter is listed on a given day, open the bench cause list on the same portal.

This works well when you know the bench and have a number in hand. It gets slow when you do not know the bench, or when you track many appeals across several benches. That is where a layer above the portal helps, which we cover in the Claw section below.

02Methods table: by case number, party name and more

03CESTAT benches and cities

CESTAT has a Principal Bench in New Delhi and regional benches in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Chandigarh and Hyderabad. Searches for CESTAT Chennai, Bangalore or Ahmedabad case status are all answered by the same portal page, by choosing that bench. Jurisdiction generally follows the Customs, Central Excise or Service Tax Commissionerate that passed the order under appeal.

If you do not know the bench, read the issuing Commissionerate on the order-in-original or order-in-appeal. That office tells you which bench has territorial jurisdiction.

04What the status fields mean

Case status pages use short words that are easy to misread. Here is what each one means for a CESTAT appeal.

• Pending: the appeal is registered and still open. No final order has been passed.
• Disposed: the appeal has been decided or closed. A final order should exist, though upload can lag behind the hearing.
• Listed: the matter is on a cause list for a hearing on a given date before a given bench.
• For orders: arguments are done or the point is ready, and the bench will pass its order on the listed date.
• Reserved: the bench has heard the matter and kept the order aside to be pronounced later. The date is not always fixed.

If a hearing has happened but status still shows pending, check the final order status page on the portal separately. For a certified copy, the registry of the bench is the authoritative source.

05Cause list and next hearing date

The portal publishes bench-wise cause lists at cestat.gov.in/viewcauselist. The case detail page can also show a next hearing date. Because CESTAT hears many similar customs and excise matters, cause lists run long, so keep your case number ready to find your matter quickly.
