Aadhaar And PAN Card Link Last Date (India, 2026)

People still search for the Aadhaar and PAN link last date hoping there is a free deadline left to catch. The honest position in 2026 is that the free window closed some time ago, so for most people linking now means paying a late fee first, and there is no fresh free date coming. This guide sets out the current deadline position, the fee, the special rule for PANs issued on an enrolment ID, and who does not have to link at all.

In short
  • Current position: no new free deadline; the free window has passed, so most people pay a late fee to link.
  • You can still link: there is no cut off that blocks linking; the sooner you link, the sooner the PAN is operative.
  • Late fee: a one time fee, notified as Rs 1,000; confirm on the portal.
  • Enrolment ID PANs: a separate deadline applies to PANs issued on an Aadhaar enrolment ID; check the current date.
  • If not linked: PAN goes inoperative, refunds can hold and TDS can be deducted higher.
  • Exempt: NRIs, non-citizens, residents of specified states, and those aged 80 or more.

01What the last date actually is now

There is no new free last date to wait for. For most taxpayers the free linking period has ended, which means two things today:

  • You can still link your Aadhaar and PAN at any time, there is no cut off that blocks you from doing it.
  • But you must first pay the notified late fee, because the free window is over.

So the practical answer to the question is: the useful deadline (the free one) has already passed, and the task now is simply to pay the fee and link, the sooner the better, so your PAN does not stay inoperative.

02The free deadline that passed

Linking Aadhaar with PAN was free for a long period, and the government extended the free deadline several times before it finally lapsed. After that date, a one time late fee began to apply under the Income-tax Act fee provision.

Since that date, a PAN that should have been linked but was not became inoperative, and a late fee, notified as Rs 1,000, must be paid before you can complete the link. See the Aadhaar and PAN link fee for how the fee is paid.

03PANs issued on an enrolment ID

There is a separate deadline many people miss. Some people were allotted a PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID (the slip you get when you apply for Aadhaar) rather than the Aadhaar number itself. These PAN holders were asked to intimate their actual Aadhaar number by a specified date.

As notified, this group was asked to link their Aadhaar number by a specified end date. If that applies to you, check the current deadline on the income tax portal, because missing it also makes the PAN inoperative.

04What happens if you miss it

A PAN that should be linked but is not becomes inoperative, which causes real problems:

  • You cannot file your income tax return smoothly, and refunds can be held.
  • TDS and TCS can be deducted at a higher rate, because the deductor treats the PAN as unavailable.
  • Many bank, mutual fund and demat actions that need a valid PAN can be blocked.

The good news is that an inoperative PAN is not cancelled. Once you pay the fee and complete the link, the PAN becomes operative again, usually within a short period after the payment is matched.

An inoperative PAN is not cancelled. Pay the late fee, complete the link, and it becomes operative again, usually within a few days of the payment being matched.

05Who is exempt

Not everyone has to link, and those who are exempt do not pay the fee. The commonly recognised exempt groups are:

  • Non-resident Indians (NRIs) as per the Income-tax Act.
  • People who are not citizens of India.
  • Residents of the specified states (Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya) covered by the exemption notification.
  • Individuals aged 80 years or more at any time during the year.

If you are an NRI and your PAN is wrongly showing inoperative, it is usually a status update issue that can be corrected. For NRI specific help, see NRI tax services in India.

06How to link now

The link itself is free; the only cost for most people is the one time late fee. The steps are:

  1. Go to the income tax portal at incometax.gov.in.
  2. Use the e-Pay Tax service to pay the late fee under the correct head.
  3. Wait for the payment to be matched to your PAN.
  4. Open the Link Aadhaar option, enter PAN and Aadhaar, and submit.
  5. Check the link status after a few days.

If your name, date of birth or gender does not match between PAN and Aadhaar, the link will fail until you correct the mismatch. A mismatch is the most common reason a paid link still does not go through. For a related correction, see updating a PAN from minor to major online.

07How Claw Tax helps

Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.

Linking Aadhaar and PAN is something you can do yourself for free on the government portal once the fee is paid, and for clean records that is the right route. Claw Tax is for the messy cases around it: a name or date of birth mismatch that keeps the link failing, an NRI whose PAN is wrongly inoperative, or a fresh or corrected PAN needed for a minor, a firm, a trust or an HUF.

With Claw Tax and Accounts PAN services, a verified chartered accountant applies for or corrects the PAN and sorts the link, with a Claw reviewer checking the application before submission and reminders before related due dates, at a fixed, published price. You approve first.

This is general information, not tax advice; a verified CA handles the specifics of your case, and provisions may change as the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the 1961 Act.

08Frequently asked questions

What is the last date to link Aadhaar and PAN in 2026?

There is no new free last date. The free linking window has already passed for most taxpayers, so you can still link at any time but must first pay the notified late fee. The practical advice is to link as soon as possible so your PAN does not stay inoperative.

Is linking Aadhaar and PAN still possible after the deadline?

Yes. Missing the free deadline does not block you from linking. You pay the one time late fee through the e-Pay Tax service on the income tax portal, then complete the link. Once the payment is matched and the link goes through, an inoperative PAN becomes operative again.

Is there a separate deadline for PANs issued on an enrolment ID?

Yes. People who were allotted a PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID, rather than the Aadhaar number, were asked to intimate their actual Aadhaar number by a specified date. If this applies to you, check the current deadline on the income tax portal, as missing it also makes the PAN inoperative.

What happens to my PAN if I do not link it?

A PAN that should be linked but is not becomes inoperative. This can hold up return filing and refunds, cause TDS or TCS to be deducted at a higher rate, and block bank, mutual fund and demat actions that need a valid PAN. The PAN is not cancelled and becomes operative again once you link.

Who does not have to link Aadhaar and PAN?

The commonly recognised exempt groups are non-resident Indians, people who are not citizens of India, residents of the specified states (Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya) covered by the notification, and individuals aged 80 years or more during the year. Exempt people do not pay the fee.

Why does my link fail even after I paid the fee?

The usual reason is a mismatch between your PAN and Aadhaar in the name, date of birth or gender. The portal matches these fields, and if they differ the link fails even when the fee is paid. You have to correct the mismatch first, then link. Paying again does not fix a mismatch.
