80c Of Income Tax Act (India, 2026)

Section 80C is the best known tax saving section in India. It lets you reduce your taxable income by up to Rs 1.5 lakh a year by putting money into certain investments or making certain payments. But there is a catch many people miss: it only works if you choose the old tax regime. This guide sets out the limit, what qualifies, the old versus new regime point, and how 80C sits inside the wider 80C to 80U group.

In short
  • What: a deduction that reduces taxable income, not a direct cut in tax.
  • Limit: up to Rs 1.5 lakh a year, combined across all qualifying options.
  • Qualifies: EPF, PPF, ELSS, life insurance, NSC, 5-year tax saving FD, tuition fees, home loan principal.
  • Old regime only: 80C is not available under the new regime.
  • Wider group: 80C sits inside 80C to 80U; 80D, 80CCD(1B) and others add on top.
  • Plan, do not rush: choose investments that suit your goals, not just a March deadline.

01What section 80C does

Section 80C is a deduction. It does not cut your tax directly; it reduces the income on which your tax is worked out. If you invest in a qualifying option, that amount (up to the limit) is subtracted from your gross total income before tax is calculated.

So the benefit depends on your tax rate. Someone in a higher slab saves more rupees from the same 80C investment than someone in a lower slab, because the deduction removes income that would have been taxed at a higher rate.

02The Rs 1.5 lakh limit

The total deduction under section 80C is capped at Rs 1.5 lakh in a financial year. This is a combined ceiling across all the qualifying options together, not per option.

  • If you invest Rs 1 lakh in PPF and pay Rs 80,000 of life insurance premium, that is Rs 1.8 lakh of eligible spend, but your deduction is still capped at Rs 1.5 lakh.
  • Amounts over Rs 1.5 lakh give no extra 80C benefit in that year.

Some related sections sit just outside this cap and can be claimed in addition, which is why planning across 80C to 80U matters.

03What qualifies for 80C

A wide range of investments and payments count towards the Rs 1.5 lakh. The common ones:

TypeExamples
Provident fundEPF (employee share), PPF
Market linkedELSS mutual funds (equity linked savings scheme)
Insurancelife insurance premium (within limits)
Small savingsNSC, 5-year tax saving bank fixed deposit, Sukanya Samriddhi
Paymentschildren tuition fees, home loan principal repayment

Each option has its own rules on lock in, returns and risk. ELSS has the shortest lock in but carries market risk; PPF and NSC are safer but lock money for longer. Choose for your own goals, not only for the tax.

04Old regime only: the big condition

This is the point most people get wrong. Section 80C is available only if you file under the old tax regime. The newer default regime offers lower slab rates but removes most deductions, including 80C.

  • Old regime: higher slab rates, but you can claim 80C and most other deductions.
  • New regime: lower slab rates, but no 80C and most deductions are gone.

Compare the two before you choose

There is no single right answer. If your 80C and other deductions are large, the old regime can win. If you claim few deductions, the new regime often wins on the lower rates. Work out the tax both ways for your actual numbers before deciding.

Choosing the regime is a yearly decision for most taxpayers. The right choice depends on how much you actually invest and claim. A quick way to start is using an ITR filing service that computes both.

05How 80C to 80U fit together

Section 80C is the headline, but it is one of a group of deductions running from 80C to 80U. A few that often add to your saving, all in the old regime:

  • 80D: health insurance premium.
  • 80CCD(1B): an extra amount for the National Pension System, over and above the 80C cap.
  • 80TTA / 80TTB: interest on savings or deposits (80TTB for senior citizens).
  • 80E: interest on an education loan.
  • 80U: for a person with a disability.

Reading them together is how good planning is done: 80C fills the Rs 1.5 lakh, then the others add on top. If a return has been missed, note the route in section 139(8A) on the updated return, and for the intimation after filing see section 143(1)(a).

06Mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming 80C in the new regime: it is not allowed there; the claim will be disallowed.
  • Last minute investing: rushing in March into a product that does not suit you, just to save tax.
  • Double counting: the Rs 1.5 lakh is a combined cap, not per investment.
  • Forgetting EPF: your own EPF contribution already uses part of the 80C limit.
80C works best when the investment suits your goals and the old regime suits your numbers. Save tax as a result of a good plan, not the reason for a bad one.

07How Claw Tax helps

Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.

If your situation is simple, salary, a little 80C, and a clear regime choice, you can file yourself for free on the government portal, and that is fine. Claw Tax is for when you want someone to compare the old and new regimes on your real numbers, make sure every eligible deduction from 80C to 80U is captured, and file it correctly.

A verified chartered accountant can compute both regimes, apply your deductions and file your salaried return at a fixed, published price (a salaried ITR starts from Rs 499, see the page), with a Claw reviewer checking it and reminders before the due date. See the services and prices at clawlaw.in/tax.

This is general information, not tax or investment advice; a verified CA handles the specifics of your case.

08Frequently asked questions

What is section 80C of the Income Tax Act?

It is a deduction that lets you reduce your taxable income by up to Rs 1.5 lakh a year through certain investments and payments, such as PPF, ELSS, life insurance, NSC, a five year tax saving fixed deposit, children tuition fees and home loan principal. It reduces the income on which tax is calculated, so the rupee saving depends on your slab.

What is the maximum deduction under section 80C?

Rs 1.5 lakh in a financial year, and it is a combined ceiling across all the qualifying options together, not per option. If your eligible spend adds up to more than Rs 1.5 lakh, the deduction is still capped at Rs 1.5 lakh and the excess gives no extra 80C benefit that year.

Can I claim 80C in the new tax regime?

No. Section 80C is available only under the old tax regime. The new regime offers lower slab rates but removes most deductions, including 80C. If you want to claim 80C and similar deductions, you have to opt for the old regime, so compare the tax both ways on your actual numbers before choosing.

What investments qualify for the 80C deduction?

Common ones are EPF and PPF, ELSS mutual funds, life insurance premium within limits, NSC, a five year tax saving bank fixed deposit, Sukanya Samriddhi, children tuition fees and home loan principal repayment. Each has its own lock in and risk, so pick what suits your goals rather than choosing purely for the tax benefit.

What is the difference between 80C and the other 80 deductions?

Section 80C is the Rs 1.5 lakh headline, but it is part of a group running from 80C to 80U. Others such as 80D for health insurance, 80CCD(1B) for the extra NPS amount, 80TTA or 80TTB for savings interest, and 80E for education loan interest can be claimed in addition, all under the old regime. Read them together for the full saving.

Does my EPF contribution count towards 80C?

Yes. Your own contribution to the Employees Provident Fund already counts towards the Rs 1.5 lakh 80C limit. Many salaried people forget this and over invest in other 80C products. Check how much of the limit your EPF already uses before deciding how much more to invest to reach Rs 1.5 lakh.
