What Is DCMS? How to Check Court Case Status on a State DCMS Portal (2026)
What DCMS means, what a state DCMS portal shows, how to check case status or a cause list on it, and how it differs from the national eCourts system.

You search for a case status and land on a page called DCMS, or you see dcms.hcs.gov.in in a link and are not sure what it is. DCMS stands for District Court Management System, sometimes written as Court Management System or Case Management System. It is a state-level judicial portal that some High Courts run to show cause lists, case status and orders for the courts in their state. You search it by case number, party name or date. This guide explains what DCMS is, which portal the name usually points to, how to check status on it, and how it differs from the national eCourts system. Last verified October 2026.
- DCMS: District Court Management System, a state-level portal for case status, cause lists and orders of district courts.
- dcms.hcs.gov.in: the Sikkim portal. "hcs" means High Court of Sikkim.
- How to search: by case number, party name or date, after picking the court.
- DCMS vs eCourts: DCMS is one state's portal, eCourts is the national system.
- Coverage: varies by state, so always confirm the next date with the court.
01What DCMS is
DCMS is a court portal, not a law or a form. It is the online front door of a state judiciary for its district courts. A lawyer, a litigant or a clerk can use it to look up a case, read an order, or see which matters are listed on a given day.
The name
The name varies. You will see District Court Management System, Court Management System, Case Management System, or just DCMS. They all describe the same idea: a state-run system that holds the records of district court cases and publishes the public parts online.
What it usually shows
- Case status: the stage of a case, the next date, and the court.
- Cause list: the list of matters a court will take up on a date.
- Orders and judgments: uploaded orders you can read or download.
- Other services: depending on the state, e-filing, certified copies and e-payment of fines.
The example people search for most
Most searches for DCMS lead to the Sikkim portal at dcms.hcs.gov.in. It is described as the District Court Case Management System for the district courts of Sikkim, run under the High Court of Sikkim. Its home page lists case status and judgments, cause list, e-filing, certified copy, e-fine payment and kiosk services.
A note on "hcs"
In dcms.hcs.gov.in, "hcs" stands for the High Court of Sikkim. People often search "dcms hcs gov in" and wonder if it is a national or another state's site. It is the Sikkim portal.
02Which states use a DCMS portal
There is no single national DCMS. Each High Court decides how it publishes district court data, so the name and the web address differ from state to state.
- Sikkim: the District Court Case Management System at dcms.hcs.gov.in, for the district courts of Sikkim. This is the one we could confirm directly on the official site.
- Other states: many High Courts and district judiciaries publish data through their own sites or through the national eCourts services. They may not call it DCMS at all.
So if you are told "check DCMS", first ask which state. If you do not know whether your state has a DCMS, the national eCourts portal is the safe place to start. It covers district courts across the country.
03How to check case status on a state DCMS portal
The steps are similar on most state portals. The exact menu names can differ, so treat these as a guide and follow the labels on your portal.
- Open the official portal. For Sikkim, go to dcms.hcs.gov.in. Type the address yourself or use the official High Court site, and avoid unknown third-party links.
- Pick Case Status. On the home page, choose the Case Status option (it may be combined with Judgments).
- Select the court. Choose the district and court complex or court name.
- Choose how to search. The common options are case number (type, number and year), party name, and date. Case number is the most exact. Party name works when you do not have the number, but spelling matters.
- Enter the captcha and search. Open the matching case to see the stage, next hearing date and orders.
- Save what you need. Note the case number and next date, and download any order you need.
If you get no result, check the case type and year, try a shorter party name, and make sure you picked the right court. A case may also sit in a different district than you expect.
04How to see the cause list
A cause list tells you which matters a court will hear on a date, and in what order. On a state DCMS portal it is usually under a separate Causelist option.
- Open the Causelist section of the portal.
- Select the court and the date.
- Open the list and look for your case number or party name.
Check it the evening before and again on the morning of the hearing. Lists can change. The same idea applies to High Courts, and we cover one example in our guide to the Bombay High Court cause list tracker.
Once you find your case, you will often see terms like interim orders in the record. If you want to understand them, read what an interim order means. Eviction matters under special laws appear on the same lists, as explained in our note on the Public Premises Act and eviction.
05DCMS vs eCourts
The two are easy to mix up. The short version: eCourts is the national system, and a DCMS is one state's portal.
| Point | State DCMS portal | National eCourts services |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | A state High Court or district judiciary | The eCourts project of the Indian judiciary |
| Area covered | Courts of that one state | District courts across states and union territories |
| Web address | Differs by state, for example dcms.hcs.gov.in for Sikkim | One national portal for services |
| Search options | Case number, party name, date (varies) | CNR, case number, party name, advocate, and more |
| Best for | State-specific services such as e-filing or kiosks | A first search when you do not know the state portal |
On eCourts, the quickest lookup is the 16-character CNR number. You can try it on the eCourts Services portal. High Court cases are on a separate High Court services site: hcservices.ecourts.gov.in.
06Coverage varies by state
Do not assume every court shows the same thing. Three differences matter in practice.
- Which courts are included: some portals cover only district courts. High Court and tribunal cases sit elsewhere.
- How fresh the data is: an order may be uploaded the same day or days later.
- Which services are live: one state may offer e-filing and certified copies online, another may only show status.
Portals also go down or change layout. When a search fails, try again later or cross-check on eCourts. For anything you will rely on in court, confirm the next date with the court registry or the cause list itself.
07Where Claw fits
If you handle cases in more than one state, you end up learning several portals, each with its own menu, captcha and quirks. That is the problem a tracking tool solves.
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals. For status, Claw pulls case updates and cause lists across the state and national court systems in one place, so you do not log in to each portal. Claw tracks cases across 8200+ courts, sends WhatsApp and email alerts, and keeps a calendar of hearing dates.
Claw also has a free plan for individual advocates. Paid plans for teams and enterprises are separate.
