01How to check NGT Delhi case status on the official portal
The National Green Tribunal runs its own public website. Case status is free to view there. Follow these steps.
- Open greentribunal.gov.in.
- In the main menu, click Case Status. The page opens with a diary number search.
- Pick your search type: diary number, case number, or party name.
- Select the Delhi bench (the Principal Bench), enter the number or name, and submit.
- Open the matching case. Note the next hearing date, the stage, and the last order.
- For the hearing day, open the cause list for the Delhi bench and look for your matter. For orders, use the Judgement/Orders section, which is organised by bench.
The site also has a live display board for each bench, which shows what is being heard in court right now.
Keep your numbers ready
Have your diary number or case number from the filing receipt. NGT numbers are usually written as case type, number and year, for example an Original Application (OA) or an Appeal. If you only know the party name, use the party search.
02Search methods compared
The portal offers more than one way in. Pick the one that matches what you have in hand.
| Method | What you need | Works best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diary number | Diary number and year from the filing receipt | The case is new and has no case number yet | Number is only on your receipt; easy to lose |
| Case number | Case type, number and year | You already have the registered number | A wrong case type or year gives no result |
| Party name | Name of applicant or respondent | You lost the number, or you track a client or a company | Spelling differences; common names return many matches |
For party name searches, try the shortest unique part of the name. Leave out words such as Ltd, Pvt, or State of, then add them back if you get too many results.
03What the Delhi bench covers
The NGT has its main bench in Delhi, called the Principal Bench, and zonal benches in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai. Under the NGT Act, 2010, each zone has a territorial area.
The Delhi bench is the Northern Zone bench. It hears matters from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, the National Capital Territory of Delhi, and Chandigarh.
This matters for status checks. If your matter arises in, say, Maharashtra, it sits with the Pune bench, not Delhi. Search the right bench or you will see nothing. The Delhi bench also hears many matters that are of wider national importance, and sits in several courts, such as the Chairperson court and other court rooms, with a separate cause list for each.
The NGT hears civil cases on environmental questions, such as pollution, forest and wildlife matters, and clearances. Appeals from its orders go to the Supreme Court.
04Status words explained
The status page uses short legal words. Here is what they mean in plain English.
| Status word | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | The case is still open and a final decision has not been given | Track the next hearing date |
| Disposed | The tribunal has finished the case with a final order | Download the final order; check the appeal period |
| Listed | The case is on the cause list for a given date | Be ready to appear or have your counsel appear |
| For orders | Arguments are done, or a short point is being decided, and the bench will pass an order | Watch the orders section for the new order |
| Adjourned | The hearing did not finish and moved to a new date | Note the new date |
A case can be listed and still not be reached on the day. Always read the order after the date, not only the status.
05Common problems when checking
- No result found. Check the bench, year and case type. Many people search Delhi for matters that belong to another zone.
- Order not yet uploaded. Orders can appear a day or more after the hearing. Check again later.
- Too many matches on party name. Add the year or narrow the name.
- Missing the date. The portal does not remind you. You have to look each time.
