How-To · Court Case Status
You have a matter before the Meghalaya High Court in Shillong, and you need to know one thing: is it listed, pending, reserved or disposed? This guide shows how to check a Meghalaya High Court case status online, which search method to use when you do not have the case number, and what each status word means. It also covers how to stop re-checking by hand.
- Where to check: the eCourts High Court Services portal or the Meghalaya High Court website, selecting Meghalaya High Court.
- Best method: CNR number. Without it, use case type, number and year, or the party name.
- Seat and jurisdiction: Shillong, for the state of Meghalaya.
- To stop re-checking: track the matter in Claw by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts. A free account is needed.
01Quick answer
To check a Meghalaya High Court case status online, open the eCourts High Court Services portal or the court’s official website, select the Meghalaya High Court, and search by case number, CNR number or party name. To avoid checking again and again, you can also track the matter in Claw by party name and get hearing and order alerts.
Why this matters
A missed listing in the High Court can mean an ex parte order or a dismissal for default. The status page is the first place to check, but it only shows the position on the day you look.
02Steps to check status on the official portal
The Meghalaya High Court is served by the national eCourts High Court Services portal, and the court also runs its own website. The steps below follow the common portal flow.
- Open the portal. Go to the eCourts High Court Services site, or the Meghalaya High Court website and find its case status link.
- Choose Case Status. Select the High Court from the list. Pick Meghalaya High Court. If the portal shows a bench or establishment drop-down, choose the Shillong seat.
- Pick your search tab. The tabs are usually case number, CNR number, party name, advocate name, FIR number and filing number.
- Fill in the details. For a case number, choose the case type, then enter the number and year. For a party name, type the name and choose the year and the pending or disposed option.
- Enter the captcha and submit. Captchas are case sensitive, so type exactly what you see.
- Open the case. Click View on the matching row to see the status, next hearing date, history of hearings and linked orders.
Screen labels change from time to time, so treat the above as the flow and not as exact button names.
03Search methods compared
Use the method that matches what you actually have in hand.
| Method | What you enter | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case number | Case type, number and year (for example a writ petition number with its year) | You have the number from an order or notice | Wrong case type is the most common reason for no result |
| CNR number | The 16 character Case Number Record from the order or receipt | You have it, since it is unique to the case | One wrong character gives no result |
| Party name | Petitioner or respondent name, plus year | You do not have the number | Spelling variations; short, partial names work better |
| Advocate name | Name of the advocate on record | You want every matter of one advocate | Name must match how it was entered |
| FIR number | Police station, FIR number and year | Criminal matters such as bail or quashing | Only works if the FIR was recorded in the case |
| Filing number | Filing number and year | The case is just filed and has no registered number yet | Number may change after registration |
If you can use only one method, use the CNR number. It points to one case and nothing else.
04The Meghalaya High Court: seat and jurisdiction
The Meghalaya High Court sits at Shillong. It was set up on 23 March 2013, when a separate High Court was created for the state. Before that, matters from Meghalaya were heard by the Gauhati High Court.
Territorial jurisdiction
Its territorial jurisdiction is the state of Meghalaya. A matter from Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram or Arunachal Pradesh does not belong here. Those go to the Gauhati High Court and its benches at Kohima, Aizawl and Itanagar, so choose the right court on the portal before you search.
Benches
The court works from its principal seat at Shillong. If the portal asks for a bench or establishment, pick the Shillong one. Do not choose a Gauhati bench by mistake, since the same case number may exist there for a different matter.
Many cases reach this court from the district courts of Meghalaya and from state tribunals and authorities, so the case history may show a lower court case number as well. Keep it ready for a better search.
Daily listings are published as cause lists on the court website.
05What the status words mean
The status line is short, but each word has a real consequence.
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | The case is registered and not yet finally decided. | Check the next hearing date regularly. |
| Listed | The case is on the cause list for a given date and court room. | Confirm the court number and item number the day before. |
| For orders | Hearing is over and the court is to pass an order on a stated point, such as admission or an interim prayer. | Watch for the order upload, usually within a few days. |
| Reserved | Arguments are complete and judgment is kept for later. No date is fixed. | Check the portal often. The judgment can come at any time. |
| Disposed | The case is decided or closed. The final order or judgment is available. | Download the order and note the limitation for appeal or review. |
For deadlines that start after a High Court order, see the statutory deadline table for Indian IP matters as one example of how short these windows can be.
06When the search finds nothing
A blank result does not always mean the case is missing. Try these in order.
- Check the court. Confirm you selected Meghalaya High Court and not another High Court.
- Check the case type and year. A petition registered in one year may carry another year in the paper you hold.
- Shorten the party name. Use one distinct word and try both pending and disposed.
- Try the filing number. Newly filed matters can appear there before a case number is given.
- Allow for lag. Updates on the portal can trail the actual hearing by some time.
- Confirm with the registry. For anything urgent, ask the advocate on record or the court registry.
Remember that the portal is an information service. The signed and certified order is what counts. If the matter also goes up to the Supreme Court, see our guide to Supreme Court case tracking software.
