How to register a marriage and get a marriage certificate in Madhya Pradesh in 2026: who must register, the online steps, documents, fee, and what to do if a dispute follows.
How-To Guide · Madhya Pradesh · Marriage Registration
A marriage certificate is the one paper you will be asked for again and again: for a passport, a visa, a bank nominee, a spouse insurance claim, a name change, and, if things go wrong, in court. To register a marriage in Madhya Pradesh, you apply on the state e-District or municipal portal under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or the Special Marriage Act, 1954, upload proof of marriage, age and address, attend the Registrar appointment with two witnesses, and then collect the certificate. Registration is also the base document in later matrimonial matters such as maintenance, custody, domestic violence and divorce, which Claw can track by party name. Last verified: October 2026.
- How: apply on the Madhya Pradesh e-District or e-Nagar Palika portal, upload documents, pay the fee, attend the Registrar appointment, then download the certificate.
- Which Act: Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 for Hindu ceremony marriages; Special Marriage Act, 1954 for civil and inter-faith marriages (30 day notice).
- Documents: proof of marriage, age proof, address proof, photographs and two witnesses (three under the Special Marriage Act).
- If a dispute follows: the certificate is the base document, and Claw tracks matrimonial cases by party name.
01Why registration matters in Madhya Pradesh
Many couples in Madhya Pradesh hold a wedding with family, a priest and an invitation card, and never register. Years later they find that no office, bank or embassy accepts the invitation card as proof. Registration fixes this by giving you a certificate issued by the state.
A wedding is not the same as a registered marriage
Under Indian law, a valid Hindu marriage depends on the ceremonies, not on registration. But the certificate is the proof that is easy to use. Without it, you may have to bring witnesses, photographs and affidavits each time someone doubts the marriage.
Where you will need the certificate
- Passport changes, spouse visas and travel abroad as a couple.
- Adding a spouse as a nominee in a bank account, provident fund, pension or insurance policy.
- Name change after marriage in Aadhaar, PAN and bank records.
- Proof of marriage in a family court, if a dispute ever reaches one.
A marriage certificate is the base document for everything that follows, from a bank nominee form to a maintenance case.
02Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act
There are two routes to registration, and the right one depends on how you married and who the couple are.
| Point | Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 | Special Marriage Act, 1954 |
|---|---|---|
| Who it covers | Hindus, including Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs, married by religious ceremony | Any two people, including inter-faith and inter-caste couples, and anyone who prefers a civil marriage |
| Is a ceremony needed first? | Yes. The marriage is solemnised by custom, then registered | No. The marriage is solemnised and registered before the Marriage Officer |
| Notice period | No notice period for registering an already solemnised marriage | Notice of intended marriage is given to the Marriage Officer, with a 30 day period for objections before the marriage |
| Who registers | Marriage Registrar for your area (municipal body or local authority) | Marriage Officer, usually the District Magistrate or an officer appointed for the district |
| Witnesses | Two witnesses usually required | Three witnesses required |
If you already married by a Hindu ceremony, the Hindu Marriage Act route is the usual one. If you are an inter-faith couple, or you want a court-style civil marriage, the Special Marriage Act is the route. A couple married by religious rites can also choose to register under the Special Marriage Act in some cases. Ask your local office which path applies to you.
03Step-by-step online process
The online steps are the same in outline across Madhya Pradesh. Screens and names can change, so follow the live portal.
- Find the right portal. Madhya Pradesh offers marriage registration through its e-District services and the municipal e-Nagar Palika service. Open the official state portal at mpedistrict.gov.in and look for the marriage registration service. The national services directory also lists it: registration of marriage, Madhya Pradesh.
- Register or log in. Create an account with a mobile number, or use a Lok Seva Kendra, CSC or MP Online kiosk if you prefer help.
- Choose the Act. Select Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act, and your district or city.
- Fill in the form. Enter details of the bride, groom, parents, date and place of marriage, and witnesses. Spell names exactly as in Aadhaar.
- Upload documents. Scan proof of marriage, age, address, photographs and witness IDs (see the next section).
- Pay the fee online and save the acknowledgement or application number sent to your mobile or email.
- Book and attend the Registrar appointment. Both partners and the witnesses usually attend with original documents. The Registrar checks them and records the marriage.
- Collect the certificate. Once approved, the marriage certificate is issued. You can download it from the portal using your application number.
Keep your application number
Write down the application number and the mobile number you used. Almost every status check and download later needs one of the two.
04Documents and fee
Document lists differ a little between municipal bodies, so treat this as the usual set and confirm locally.
- Proof of marriage: wedding invitation card and wedding photographs, or a priest or temple certificate where accepted.
- Age proof of both partners: birth certificate, school leaving certificate or 10th marksheet.
- Address proof: Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or a recent utility bill.
- Photographs: recent passport size photographs of both partners (commonly four each).
- Witnesses: two witnesses with ID proof, who must be present at the appointment (three under the Special Marriage Act).
- For a second marriage: a divorce decree or death certificate of the earlier spouse.
- For the Special Marriage Act: an affidavit of age, marital status and residence for each partner. A partner who is a non-resident or foreigner may need extra papers.
The minimum legal age for marriage is 21 for the groom and 18 for the bride. The fee for registration is small and set by the state or the local body, and a late-registration charge may apply if you register long after the wedding. Check the exact amount at the payment step on the portal.
05Marriage certificate download in Madhya Pradesh
After approval, you can usually download the marriage certificate from the same portal where you applied. Use your application number, or search by the names of the spouses and the date of marriage where the portal allows it.
- Log in with the mobile number used in the application.
- Open your applications or the certificate download option.
- Enter the application number and download the PDF.
- Print it and keep several copies. For use abroad, you may also need attestation or apostille, which is a separate process.
If the portal shows no record, the application may still be pending at the Registrar’s desk. Visit or call the office with your acknowledgement receipt.
06Common problems and how to fix them
Names or dates do not match
A spelling difference between Aadhaar, school records and the form is the most common reason for delay. Correct the source document first, or attach an affidavit explaining the difference.
The wedding was many years ago
Late registration is still possible. Expect to bring stronger proof, such as old photographs, children’s birth certificates and an affidavit, and possibly pay a late fee.
One partner cannot attend
Most offices want both partners present. If one partner is abroad or ill, ask the Registrar in writing what they accept.
Application rejected or stuck
Read the rejection reason, fix the point raised and reapply or reply through the portal. If the office does not act, a written complaint to the senior officer of the municipal body or the district office is the next step.
07If a matrimonial dispute follows
Most marriages never reach court. But when they do, the registered marriage is the starting point. A family court asks first whether the marriage is proved, and the certificate answers that quickly.
- Divorce: read how mutual divorce works in India.
- Maintenance: read how to file a maintenance petition.
- Domestic violence: read how to file a domestic violence complaint.
- Custody and maintenance together: see custody and maintenance case tracking.
These matters can run for years across the family court, the Madhya Pradesh High Court and sometimes the Supreme Court. Dates change often, and a missed hearing can cost you. That is why parties and their advocates keep a close watch on the case.
