01Why status checks go wrong
Most failed case status searches are not a portal problem. They are a data entry problem. The person searching has the wrong case type, a spelling of a party name that differs from the court record, or the wrong year.
The same case can have more than one number
A matter in the Manipur High Court may carry a filing number first, then a registered case number once it is listed. An appeal can also have a different number from the case in the lower court. If you search with the wrong one, you get nothing, and it looks as if the case does not exist.
Names are spelt in many ways
Manipur names are often written differently across documents, for example with or without a surname, or with different spellings of the same name. A strict party name search can miss a case that is really there. Searching with fewer letters usually works better.
Status is only useful if you check it on time
A status page shows where the case stands today. It does not warn you that the next date has moved, or that an order was uploaded yesterday. Advocates who rely on memory miss dates. That is the real cost of manual checking.
A case status search fails most often because of the number or the name you typed, not because the case is missing.
02About the Manipur High Court
The High Court of Manipur is the High Court for the state of Manipur. It was established on 25 March 2013, and its principal seat is at Imphal. Before that, a bench of the Gauhati High Court handled matters from the state.
Territorial jurisdiction covers the whole of Manipur. That means writ petitions, civil and criminal appeals, and revisions arising from the district courts and tribunals in the state come here. Appeals against its orders go to the Supreme Court of India.
Unlike some larger High Courts, there is no separate permanent bench or circuit bench to choose between. When the portal asks for a bench or establishment, you select the principal seat at Imphal.
Looking for another court?
Every High Court has its own number formats and listing practice. If your matter is in a larger court, see how a cause list is read in our Bombay High Court cause list guide.
03Steps to check status on the official portal
The steps below work on the eCourts High Court Services portal, which serves the Manipur High Court. The official High Court website also offers a case status page.
- Open the portal. Visit hcservices.ecourts.gov.in.
- Select the High Court. Choose High Court of Manipur from the list. Pick the principal seat at Imphal if it asks for a bench.
- Open Case Status. Click Case Status and choose the tab for the method you want, such as Case Number, Party Name or Advocate Name.
- Enter the details. For case number, pick the case type, then type the number and year. For party name, type the name and the year, and choose pending, disposed or both.
- Enter the captcha. Type the characters shown and click Go.
- Open the case. Click View against the right row. You will see the parties, the status, the next hearing date, and the order list.
You can also use the court’s own site at hcmimphal.nic.in, which links to case status and other services.
Tip: write down the CNR number once you find the case. It is the fastest way to open the same case again.
04Search methods compared
Use the method that matches what you already hold in your file.
| Method | What you enter | Best used when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case number | Case type, number and year | You have the registered case number from an order or notice | Wrong case type or year gives no result |
| CNR number | The 16 character Case Number Record | You have it from a previous search or an order | One wrong character fails the search |
| Party name | Petitioner or respondent name, plus year | You do not have a number | Spelling and surname variants can hide the case |
| Advocate name | Name of the advocate on record | You want every matter of one advocate | Result lists can be long |
| FIR number | FIR number, year and police station | A criminal matter arising from an FIR | Only works if the FIR detail was entered at filing |
| Filing number | Filing number and year | The case is new and not yet registered | The filing number can change to a case number later |

05What the status words mean
The status field tells you where the case is in its life. These are the words you will see most often.
- Pending: the case is still alive. It has not been finally decided.
- Disposed: the court has decided the case, by judgment, order, withdrawal or dismissal. Check the order for the result.
- Listed: the case is on a cause list for a given date and court room. See the next hearing date field.
- For orders: arguments are over or the point is taken up only to pass an order, and the court will pronounce it on the date shown.
- Reserved: the hearing is finished and the judgment is kept aside to be delivered later. The date is not fixed in advance.

06When the case is not found
If the portal says no record found, work through this short list before you assume the case is missing.
- Check the case type. A writ petition, a bail application and a criminal appeal each have their own type.
- Try a shorter party name, or only the first name, and select both pending and disposed.
- Try the filing number if the case is recent.
- Confirm the year. A case filed in December may carry the next year in some records.
- Check whether the matter is actually in the Manipur High Court, or in a district court or tribunal in Manipur.
- If the portal is slow or down, try again later or use the court website.
When the matter is a software or technology contract dispute, the real issue is often what to track after the judgment. Our note on perpetual versus subscription licences covers one such topic.

Once a matter is added, you can track it by party name or case number and get hearing and order alerts, so you hear about a new date or a new order without checking by hand.
Claw’s case search also covers High Court judgments from 1990 across over 30 crore judgements, with results in under 5 seconds, which helps when you need a precedent for the same matter. Status search needs a free account. Create a FREE Claw account and track Manipur High Court matters by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts. Visit clawlaw.in.
