Jharkhand High Court Judgments: How to Find and Download Them Online (2026)
A step-by-step guide to finding and downloading a Jharkhand High Court judgment or order online, how to tell reported from unreported judgments, how to cite them, and how to search by date range and keyword.
How-To Guide · Jharkhand High Court
You have a case number, a party name or only a vague memory of a Jharkhand High Court order, and you need the actual judgment as a PDF today. The official portals can give it to you free, but only if you know which page to open and how to search it. To find a Jharkhand High Court judgment or order, use the official High Court website or the eCourts judgment search, search by case number, party, judge, date or Act, then download the PDF. For faster search across courts, Claw lets you search 30 crore+ judgments by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds, with verified citations. This page was last verified in October 2026.
- Free route: the official Jharkhand High Court website or the eCourts judgment search. Search by case number, party, judge, date or Act, then download the PDF.
- Reported vs unreported: both can be cited. Give the case number and decision date for unreported ones.
- Faster search across courts: Claw, with 30 crore+ judgments searchable in under 5 seconds and verified citations.
- Different job: for a pending case’s stage and next date, see the case status guide.
01Why finding a Jharkhand High Court judgment is harder than it looks
Finding one specific judgment sounds simple, but most people lose time on the same three problems.
You rarely have the exact details
Clients remember a party name, a rough month or a section of law. They seldom remember the case type, number and year in the form the portal expects. A search that needs a perfect case number fails when all you have is a name.
Judgment and order are not the same thing
A final judgment ends the matter. An order can be an interim direction, an adjournment or a procedural step. Many lawyers need the interim order, not the final judgment, and the two sit in different places on the portal.
A downloaded PDF is not a citation
Even after you find the PDF, you still need to know whether it is reported, how to cite it, and whether a later bench has changed the view. The file alone does not tell you that.
The hard part of finding a judgment is not the download. It is searching with half the details and then knowing how to cite what you found.
A different job: case status
This page is about judgments and orders. If you need the current stage or next hearing date of a pending case, that is case status. See our guide on how to check Jharkhand High Court case status.
02Step by step: find and download a judgment on the official portal
Two official routes are free. The first is the judgments and orders section of the Jharkhand High Court website. The second is the eCourts judgment search portal for High Courts, which is run for the Department of Justice and holds judgments and final orders of the High Courts.
- Open the portal. Go to the official Jharkhand High Court website and open its judgments or orders search. Or open the eCourts High Court judgment search and select Jharkhand High Court.
- Pick your search type. The eCourts portal lets you search by High Court, judge name, case number, Act, section, party names and decision date, and it also has a free text search for keywords.
- Enter your details. If you know the case number, use it, because it gives the most exact match. If not, use the party name or the Act and section.
- Set a date range. If you are unsure of the date, give a wide range, such as a full year, and narrow it later.
- Submit with the captcha. Type the captcha exactly as shown. If it does not load, refresh it.
- Check the result. Match the case number, bench and decision date before you open the file. Parties with common names often return many results.
- Download the PDF. Save the file with the case number and decision date in its name, so you can find it again.
Both portals are free to use. Remember that the portal is an official record of what the court uploaded. It does not add headnotes, and it does not tell you whether a judgment is still good law.
03Judgment or order: what is the difference
A judgment is the court’s reasoned decision on the matter, while an order is any direction the court gives, whether final or interim.
- Final judgment: decides the petition, appeal or writ. It has reasons, findings and a final direction.
- Final order: disposes of the case, often briefly, for example when a petition is dismissed or disposed of with a direction.
- Interim order: a temporary direction, such as a stay, notice or listing order. These matter in live disputes.
If you are looking for an interim order in a pending case, searching the judgment portal may not be enough, because it mainly holds judgments and final orders. For a pending matter, also check the daily orders on the case page. That is covered in the case status guide.
04Reported vs unreported judgments
A reported judgment is one published in a law report, while an unreported judgment is available only as the court’s own uploaded copy.
Reported judgments
These appear in series such as AIR, SCC or a High Court law journal, usually with headnotes. They carry a printed citation, which courts find easy to accept. Many judges expect a reported citation when one exists.
Unreported judgments
Most judgments are never reported. They are still valid and can be cited. The official portal copy is the source. When you cite one, give the case type, number, year, the parties, the bench and the date of decision, and attach a copy for the court.
What this means for you
Do not assume that a judgment is weak because it is unreported. Equally, do not assume that a reported one is the latest word. Always check whether a larger bench or the Supreme Court has dealt with the same point later.
05How to cite a Jharkhand High Court judgment
A good citation lets the judge and the other side find the same document in seconds.
- Case title: the names of the main parties as they appear in the cause title.
- Case number: case type, number and year, for example a writ petition or criminal appeal number as printed on the judgment.
- Court: Jharkhand High Court.
- Date of decision: the day the judgment was pronounced, not the day it was uploaded.
- Report citation: if reported, add the law report citation. If not, write that it is unreported and give the case number.
- Paragraph: point to the paragraph number for the exact proposition.
Keep a PDF copy ready in court. If the other side disputes your citation, the case number and decision date let the bench verify it quickly.
06Date range and keyword search tips
Good search habits save more time than any tool.
- Start wide, then narrow. Use a one year date range first. Add the Act or section only if the results are too many.
- Search by Act and section. This is the best way to find judgments on one point of law, for example a section of the Jharkhand state Act or a central Act.
- Try spelling variants. Indian names are spelled in many ways. Try short forms, surnames alone and alternate spellings.
- Use free text for the legal point. Use two or three exact words that a judge would write, not a full sentence.
- Filter by judge when the bench matters. If you want how a specific judge has handled a point, search by judge name and a date range.
- Check the date. Rely on the date of decision on the document, not on the upload date.
