How to check the status of an income-tax appeal before the Ahmedabad bench of the ITAT, which Gujarat districts it covers, what each status means, and a faster way to follow your matter.

Jurisdiction · ITAT Ahmedabad

Your income-tax appeal against an order of the CIT(A) is now before the Ahmedabad bench of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. Has it been listed? Was it heard? Is the order out? To check ITAT Ahmedabad case status, use the case status search on the official ITAT portal (itat.gov.in) with the PAN, the appeal number or the party name. You can also check it in Claw by party name, after creating a free account. This page explains both ways, what the Ahmedabad bench covers, and what each status means.

The short answer
  • Official route: the case status search on itat.gov.in, with Ahmedabad selected as the bench.
  • Best key: the assessee PAN, then the appeal number, then the party name.
  • Bench area: central and north Gujarat districts including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Vadodara. Rajkot and Rajasthan have their own benches.
  • In Claw: search ITAT Ahmedabad by party name or number with a free account, and get hearing and order alerts.

01What the Ahmedabad bench handles

The ITAT is the first appellate forum that can decide facts in income-tax matters. Most appeals reach it from the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), the CIT(A). Both the taxpayer and the department can appeal. A further appeal on a substantial question of law goes to the High Court, which for Gujarat is the Gujarat High Court.

The Ahmedabad bench sits at Abhinav Arcade, Ellis Bridge, Ahmedabad. According to the ITAT website, its area includes these Gujarat districts: Ahmedabad, Anand, Aravalli, Banaskantha, Bhavnagar, Chhotaudepur, Dahod, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Mahisagar, Mehsana, Nadiad, Panchmahal, Patan, Sabarkantha and Vadodara. Ahmedabad has more than one court room, and matters are spread across benches such as the A and B benches, so a hearing notice always names the bench to attend.

Gujarat has other ITAT benches too. Rajkot has its own bench, and a Surat bench has been announced in the news. Rajasthan is handled by the Jaipur and Jodhpur benches, not Ahmedabad. So a Surat or Rajkot assessee may not find the appeal under Ahmedabad.

This matters for status checks. If you pick the wrong bench on the portal, your appeal will not appear, and it can look like the filing was lost. Confirm the bench from your appeal papers first.

The parent guide

For how ITAT status search works across all benches, see our ITAT case search guide. This page covers only Ahmedabad.

02Steps to check status on the official portal

Follow these steps on the official site. Portal menus change from time to time, so the labels you see may differ a little.

  1. Open itat.gov.in.
  2. Go to the case status or case details section.
  3. Select Ahmedabad as the bench.
  4. Choose your search type. For an income-tax appeal, start with PAN.
  5. Enter the PAN, or the appeal number with its year, and complete any verification the page asks for.
  6. Open the matching record. Read the current status, the next hearing date, and whether an order is available.
  7. Write down the appeal number and next date, and check again a day or two before the hearing.

An appeal number has a type, a serial number and a year. Copy it exactly as printed on your notice of hearing or on the filed Form 36 (assessee appeal) or Form 36A (department appeal). A missing year or a wrong serial is the most common reason for a blank result.

03Methods: PAN, appeal number and party name

Tax appeals are indexed around the assessee, so the PAN is the most reliable key. Here is how the three methods compare for an Ahmedabad matter.

MethodWhat you needBest whenWatch out for
PANThe assessee PANYou have the PAN and want every appeal for that assessee, including old yearsA wrong letter or digit returns nothing. Check the PAN on the assessment order
Appeal numberAppeal type, number and yearYou have the hearing notice and want one exact appealDepartmental and assessee appeals carry different numbers for the same dispute
Party nameName of the assessee, or the department officerYou lost the number and PANSpelling, initials and suffixes such as Pvt Ltd, Limited or LLP can change the result

Ahmedabad has many family groups with several firms and trusts under one name. Search by PAN for each entity, and note every appeal number you see. Cross-appeals, where both sides appeal the same CIT(A) order, often sit side by side with close numbers.

04Status glossary: what the words mean

ITAT status fields are short, so one word can worry you for no reason. This is what they usually mean.

StatusPlain meaningWhat to do
PendingThe appeal is filed and not yet decided. It may be waiting for a first hearing or a later dateCheck the next hearing date and keep papers ready
ListedThe appeal is on the cause list for a particular date and benchConfirm the bench and date, and prepare your paper book and submissions
Heard / reservedArguments are done and the bench will pronounce the order laterWatch for the order. Do not expect a fixed date
For ordersThe matter is fixed for the order to be pronounced or uploadedCheck for the order copy on the portal on that date
DisposedThe appeal is finally decided or closedDownload the order and note the time limit for any further appeal to the High Court

The exact wording on the portal can differ from this table. Always read the order itself for the final position, since a status word is only a label.

05Ahmedabad filing mistakes that hide your appeal

Most blank results in Ahmedabad come from a small list of causes.

  • Wrong bench. The appeal sits at Rajkot or another Gujarat bench, not Ahmedabad.
  • Wrong key. A PAN typed for the partner or director instead of the firm or company.
  • Group entities. You search one firm and miss the sister concern with the same promoters.
  • Old status. The record is not yet updated after a recent hearing. Wait a day and check again.
  • No reminder. The status is right, but nobody checked before the date.

The last one is the costly one. A missed listing or order date is usually a calendar problem, not a search problem.
