How to Search Court Cases in Pune (District Court, Sessions and Tribunals)

Pune has one of the busiest district court systems in Maharashtra, and it is not just one building. The District and Sessions Court at Shivajinagar sits alongside the Court of Small Causes, a Family Court, and several taluka courts across the district, and a search that only checks one of them can miss the case entirely. This guide explains how Pune’s courts are organised, how to search for a case by party name, advocate, case number, or CNR, and which High Court hears an appeal from Pune.

01How Pune’s courts are organised

Pune’s court system is not a single institution. It is a cluster of courts, each handling a different type of matter, and knowing which one your case sits in is the first step before you search anything.

The District and Sessions Court, Shivajinagar

The District and Sessions Court for Pune is based at Shivajinagar. It is the principal civil and criminal court for the district, headed by the Principal District and Sessions Judge, with Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Civil Judge (Junior Division) courts handling civil suits by value, and Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) and Sessions courts handling criminal matters. Below the main Shivajinagar campus, the district also has separate court establishments at other locations within Pune district, including Pimpri Chinchwad and Shirur (Ghodnadi), which handle matters filed in those areas.

The Court of Small Causes

Pune also has a Court of Small Causes, sitting at the Shivajinagar court campus. Despite the name, Small Causes Courts in Maharashtra (also found in Mumbai and Nagpur) are staffed by senior judicial officers and mainly hear landlord and tenant disputes and certain money suits under the Provincial Small Cause Courts Act, 1887.

Family Court and other specialised courts

A separate Family Court operates in Pune for matrimonial and family matters, along with courts handling Motor Accident Claims, and other subject-specific benches within the district judiciary. Civil and criminal work is otherwise split across the Civil Judge and Magistrate courts described above.

Pune-seated tribunals

Outside the regular court hierarchy, the Debts Recovery Tribunal, Pune (DRT Pune) sits in the city and hears bank and financial-institution recovery matters. Its territorial jurisdiction covers Pune and several neighbouring Maharashtra districts. There is no NCLT bench seated in Pune itself: company law matters for Maharashtra are heard by the NCLT Mumbai bench.

02Where Pune case records live online

Two official portals cover Pune court records, and they serve different purposes.

The Pune District Court website

The court’s own site at pune.dcourts.gov.in lists case status search, court orders, cause lists, and caveat search for the Shivajinagar campus and the district’s other court establishments. It is run under the eCommittee’s district court template used across India, so its layout is familiar if you have searched any other district court site.

The eCourts services portal

The national eCourts portal at services.ecourts.gov.in covers the same Pune district and taluka courts as part of its all-India district and taluka court database. This is usually the faster option if you already have a CNR number, since CNR search works the same way regardless of which state or district the case belongs to.

The CNR number

Every case filed in a computerised district or taluka court in India, including Pune, gets a 16-character CNR (unique case number). It encodes the state, district, court establishment, filing number, and year. Once you have a case’s CNR, it is the single most reliable way to pull up its status on either portal.

03How to search a Pune court case, step by step

The steps below work on both pune.dcourts.gov.in and services.ecourts.gov.in, since they use the same underlying eCourts search structure.

1. If you have the CNR number, go to the CNR search box on either portal, enter the 16-character code and the captcha, and the full case record opens directly, showing parties, advocates, filing and registration numbers, the next hearing date, case stage, and order history.
2. If you have the case number but not the CNR, use Case Status search by case number. On the Pune district site this means selecting the court complex (Shivajinagar, or the relevant taluka establishment), the court establishment, the case type, the case number, and the filing year.
3. If you only have a party name, use party name search and select the court complex first. Enter the petitioner or respondent name as it appears in the filing. Try a shortened or partial version of the name if the full name returns nothing, since spelling in the registry can vary from how a name is normally written.
4. If you know the advocate but not the party, use advocate name search the same way, selecting the correct court complex before you search, since Pune has more than one.
5. Once you find the case, check its status and orders. The case status page shows the current stage, the next date, and a history of hearings. A separate court orders or judgment section, searchable by case number, order date, or party name, lets you view and download orders as they are uploaded.

The single most useful piece of information for a Pune case search is the CNR number. Once you have it, the court, the establishment, and the full status all follow automatically.

04Appeals: which High Court covers Pune

Pune falls under the Bombay High Court. There is no separate High Court bench seated in Pune itself, so appeals and writ petitions from Pune district courts, the Court of Small Causes, and DRT Pune (through the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal) go up to the Bombay High Court.

Most Pune matters go to the Bombay High Court’s Principal Seat in Mumbai. The Bombay High Court also has circuit benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad, and, since August 2025, Kolhapur, but the Kolhapur bench’s jurisdiction covers Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, not Pune. As a rough rule, appeals against a Civil Judge (Senior Division) decree in Pune above the pecuniary threshold for direct High Court appeal go straight to the High Court, while appeals from a Judicial Magistrate First Class go first to the Sessions Court and only reach the High Court from there.
