How to Search Court Cases in Chandigarh (District Court, High Court and Tribunals)
Where a Chandigarh case actually sits (District Court, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, or a tribunal) and the exact steps to check its status online.
Court Search · Chandigarh
A case filed in Chandigarh is not automatically a "Chandigarh High Court" case, because Chandigarh does not have its own High Court. Depending on what the matter is, it could sit in the District Court, Sector 43, Chandigarh, in the Punjab and Haryana High Court which sits in Chandigarh but covers two states, or in a tribunal such as CAT, a DRT bench, or CESTAT, each with its own portal. This guide explains that structure and gives the exact steps to check a case status for each, using the official eCourts and Punjab and Haryana High Court systems.
- District matters: District Court, Chandigarh, Sector 43, searchable on eCourts by CNR, case number, party name or advocate name.
- Appeals and writs: the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seated in Chandigarh but common to Punjab, Haryana and the UT, searchable at highcourtchd.gov.in.
- Specialised matters: CAT, DRT and CESTAT each run separate Chandigarh benches with their own portals, outside eCourts.
- No single search: these are five different systems; there is no one government portal that searches all of them together.
01Chandigarh's court structure: District Court, High Court and tribunals
Chandigarh is a Union Territory, and it does not have a High Court of its own. That single fact explains most of the confusion about where a Chandigarh case is actually heard.
District Court, Chandigarh
Everyday civil, criminal, and family matters filed in Chandigarh go to the District and Sessions Court at Sector 43, Chandigarh, along with the subordinate courts under it. This is the court most people mean when they say "the Chandigarh court".
Punjab and Haryana High Court
The Punjab and Haryana High Court is seated in Chandigarh, but it is not a Chandigarh-only court. It is the common High Court for the state of Punjab, the state of Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, all at once. That means an appeal or writ petition from a Chandigarh case, and from cases across Punjab and Haryana, can all land at the same High Court registry in Chandigarh. This is why "Chandigarh High Court" is not the correct name, even though people use it informally.
Chandigarh-seated tribunals
A few specialised tribunals also sit in Chandigarh and hear matters from a wider region, not just the city: the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Chandigarh Bench for central government service disputes, one or more Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) benches for bank recovery matters, and the CESTAT Chandigarh Regional Bench for customs, excise, and service tax appeals. These run on their own separate portals, outside eCourts.
| Forum | What it covers | Where it sits | Official portal |
|---|---|---|---|
| District Court, Chandigarh | Civil, criminal, family and other district-level matters filed in the UT | Sector 43, Chandigarh | eCourts (services.ecourts.gov.in) |
| Punjab and Haryana High Court | Appeals, writs and original matters for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh | Capitol Complex, Chandigarh | highcourtchd.gov.in |
| CAT, Chandigarh Bench | Central government service and recruitment disputes | Sector 17-C, Chandigarh | cgat.gov.in / CAT Chandigarh Bench |
| DRT, Chandigarh | Bank and NBFC debt recovery, SARFAESI matters | Chandigarh (multiple DRT benches) | drt.gov.in |
| CESTAT, Chandigarh Bench | Customs, central excise and service tax appeals | Sector 17-C, Chandigarh | cestat.gov.in |
Not a single search
Because these are five separate systems, there is no one government portal that searches a party name across all of them at once. Each step below is for one forum. For the general method that applies to any Indian court, see how to search court cases across Indian courts.
02How to search a Chandigarh District Court case on eCourts
The District Court at Chandigarh is on the national eCourts network, so its case records are searchable the same way as any other computerised district court in India.
- Go to the eCourts Services portal at services.ecourts.gov.in and open the "Case Status" section.
- Select Chandigarh as the state or UT, then pick the Chandigarh district court or complex from the list.
- Choose a search type. eCourts lets you search by CNR number, case number, filing number, party name, advocate name, FIR number, or act. The CNR number, a unique 16-character code every case gets, is the fastest and most reliable option.
- Enter the details and the captcha, then submit the search.
- Open the case from the results to see the current stage, the next hearing date, and the order sheet.
Party name and advocate name searches depend on exactly how the name was typed at filing, so a spelling difference, an initial used instead of a full name, or a missing middle name can mean a case does not show up even though it exists. When that happens, try the case number or CNR route instead, or narrow the search with the advocate name and case year together.
To also see a court's scheduled hearings for the day rather than one specific case, see how to read a cause list in India.
03How to check a case status on the Punjab and Haryana High Court
The Punjab and Haryana High Court runs its own case status system, separate from the district eCourts portal, at highcourtchd.gov.in.
- Go to highcourtchd.gov.in and open the "Case Status" link under the case information section on the homepage.
- Pick a search option. The High Court's case status system supports lookups by case number and case type, and party name. If you already have the case number and year, that is the quickest route.
- Enter the required details and the captcha, then search.
- Check the result for the bench, the current status, and the next listing date. The same portal also has a separate "Causelist" link and a "Judgments/Orders" search for reading the order once it is out.
Because the Punjab and Haryana High Court covers two states and one Union Territory from a single registry, a search here is not limited to Chandigarh cases. If a matter is filed anywhere in Punjab or Haryana and reaches the High Court on appeal or writ, its record lives on this same system, not on a separate "Chandigarh" one.
04Searching Chandigarh's tribunals: CAT, DRT and CESTAT
Chandigarh also hosts three specialised tribunals that a general court search will not cover, since none of them sit on the eCourts network.
Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Chandigarh Bench
The CAT Chandigarh Bench, in Sector 17-C, hears service and recruitment disputes involving central government employees from the region. Case status and cause lists are searched on the CAT system rather than eCourts. See cgat.gov.in.
Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT), Chandigarh
Chandigarh has one or more DRT benches that hear bank and NBFC debt recovery applications and SARFAESI appeals from a wide territorial jurisdiction covering Punjab, Haryana and neighbouring areas, not Chandigarh alone. Case records are searched on the DRT portal, not eCourts. See drt.gov.in.
CESTAT, Chandigarh Regional Bench
The Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal has a regional bench at Chandigarh, in Sector 17-C, that hears customs, central excise and service tax appeals. Orders and case status are available on the CESTAT portal. See cestat.gov.in.
If the matter you are tracking is a consumer complaint rather than a civil suit or a tribunal appeal, that runs through a separate consumer forum system. See how to search consumer forum cases in India. And if you are evaluating dedicated case-tracking software instead of checking cases one at a time, see CaseTrack alternatives.
05Where Claw fits
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
The pattern above, one court structure, five separate search systems, is common across Indian cities, not just Chandigarh. For day-to-day tracking rather than a one-off status check, Claw's case management layer covers 9,102 courts across India, including all states, tribunals, district courts, and the Supreme Court, so a Chandigarh matter, a Punjab and Haryana High Court appeal, and a tribunal case can be tracked from one place with auto case updates, a calendar, cause lists, and WhatsApp and email alerts, instead of checking eCourts, highcourtchd.gov.in, and a tribunal portal separately. Party-name search across this wider set of courts is also name-tolerant, which helps with the spelling and initials problem described above.

07Frequently asked questions
How do I check a Chandigarh court case status?
It depends which forum the case is in. For a District Court, Chandigarh matter, search by CNR number, case number, party name or advocate name on the eCourts Services portal (services.ecourts.gov.in). For an appeal or writ at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, use the Case Status section on highcourtchd.gov.in instead. Tribunal matters (CAT, DRT, CESTAT) are checked on their own separate portals.
Which High Court covers Chandigarh?
The Punjab and Haryana High Court covers Chandigarh. Chandigarh, as a Union Territory, does not have its own High Court, so cases from Chandigarh that go up on appeal or writ are heard by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which is seated in the city but is not exclusive to it.
Can I search by party name?
Yes, both eCourts (for the District Court) and the Punjab and Haryana High Court case status system support a party name search. Results depend on how the name was recorded when the case was filed, so a spelling variation or a missing initial can mean a case does not appear even though it exists. If a party name search fails, try the CNR number or case number instead.
Does the Punjab and Haryana High Court cover Punjab and Haryana both?
Yes. The Punjab and Haryana High Court is the common High Court for the state of Punjab, the state of Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. All three fall under its jurisdiction from a single registry in Chandigarh, which is why its case status system is not limited to Chandigarh cases alone.
What is a CNR number, and do I need one to search a Chandigarh case?
A CNR number is a unique 16-character code assigned to every case filed in a computerised court, including the District Court, Chandigarh. It is not compulsory, since you can also search by case number, party name or advocate name, but it is the fastest and most reliable way to find a specific case because it does not depend on spelling.
Can I track hearings at Chandigarh tribunals like CAT, DRT or CESTAT online?
Yes, but not through eCourts. CAT Chandigarh Bench, the Chandigarh DRT benches, and the CESTAT Chandigarh Regional Bench each publish cause lists, orders and case status on their own dedicated portals, so you need to check the specific tribunal's website rather than the district court or High Court system.
