How to Register a Marriage Online in Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh you register a marriage online through the Stamp and Registration Department portal at igrsup.gov.in, where the UP Marriage Registration Rules 2017 make registration of every marriage compulsory. You fill the marriage registration form, upload proof of marriage and the identity and age documents of both spouses, pay the fee, and then both parties attend the Sub-Registrar office with witnesses to complete the entry. A registered marriage gives you a government certificate that banks, passport offices, visa authorities and courts accept as proof. This page walks through who can register, the exact online steps on igrsup.gov.in, the documents and fees, the timeline, and what to do if your application is rejected or the fact of the marriage is later disputed. - Where: igrsup.gov.in, the UP Stamp and Registration Department portal, under Vivah Panjikaran.
- Law: Hindu Marriage Act 1955 (s.8) or Special Marriage Act 1954; registration is mandatory under the UP Marriage Registration Rules 2017.
- Need: age and address proof of both spouses, proof of marriage, photographs, two witnesses and an affidavit.
- In person: both spouses and both witnesses attend the Sub-Registrar office for verification before the certificate is issued.
- If refused or disputed: challenge the refusal before the higher authority or High Court; a marriage dispute goes to the family or civil court.
01Who must register and under which law
Registration of marriage is mandatory in Uttar Pradesh under the Uttar Pradesh Marriage Registration Rules 2017, whatever your religion. The law under which you register depends on how you married:
- Already-solemnised marriage (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain ceremony): registered under Section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955.
- Court or inter-faith marriage: solemnised and registered under the Special Marriage Act 1954, which needs a 30-day public notice before the marriage.
- Other communities: registered under the UP rules as a civil registration of the marriage that has taken place.
Both spouses must be of legal marriage age, which is 21 years for the man and 18 years for the woman, and the marriage must already have been solemnised (except under the Special Marriage Act, where the registrar solemnises it).
02Documents you need
Keep clear scans ready before you start. The usual set is:
- Age proof of both spouses: Aadhaar, high school certificate, PAN or passport.
- Address proof of both spouses: Aadhaar, voter ID, electricity bill or passport.
- Proof of marriage: wedding invitation card, photographs of the ceremony, or a certificate from the temple, gurudwara or venue.
- Passport-size photographs of both spouses and a joint photograph.
- Two witnesses who attended the marriage, with their ID proof.
- An affidavit stating the date and place of marriage, marital status and that the marriage is of free will.
Names and dates of birth must match across documents. A mismatch between the Aadhaar name and the high school certificate is the most common reason an application is held up.

03Register online on igrsup.gov.in, step by step
The Stamp and Registration Department runs the service at igrsup.gov.in.
- Open igrsup.gov.in and choose Vivah Panjikaran (Marriage Registration).
- Select Aavedan Karen (Apply) and create your application with a mobile number and OTP.
- Fill the details of both spouses, the date and place of marriage, and the witnesses.
- Upload the scanned documents and photographs in the sizes the portal specifies.
- Pay the registration fee online and note the application number.
- Book or note the appointment, then both spouses and both witnesses attend the Sub-Registrar office on the given date for verification and biometric or signature capture.
- After verification the officer issues the marriage registration certificate, which you can download from the portal.
Use the Aavedan ki Sthiti (application status) link on the same portal to track the file using your application number.
04Fees and timeline
The Uttar Pradesh marriage registration fee is modest and is paid online during the application. If the marriage is registered within the time the rules allow, the standard fee applies; a late registration after the prescribed window attracts a small additional late fee.
Once both spouses and the witnesses attend and the documents are in order, the certificate is usually issued the same day or within a few working days. A Special Marriage Act registration takes longer because of the 30-day notice period.
05Common problems and fixes
- Name or date mismatch across documents. Correct the weaker document first (for example, update Aadhaar) so every proof agrees, then re-upload.
- Witness not available on the appointment date. Both witnesses must appear in person; reschedule rather than send a substitute whose ID is not on the form.
- Upload rejected for size or format. Re-scan to the exact dimensions and file type the portal asks for.
- Application rejected by the Sub-Registrar. Ask for the written reason, fix the defect, and re-apply; if the refusal is wrong in law you can escalate.
06If it becomes a dispute
Most registrations go through cleanly. Sometimes they do not: the Sub-Registrar refuses to register, one spouse denies the marriage, or the validity of the marriage is challenged in a petition for nullity, divorce or maintenance. A refusal to register can be challenged before the higher registration authority or by a writ in the High Court, and a dispute about the marriage itself is heard by the family court or the district civil court. The case then lives on in the court that hears it, with dates, orders and the next hearing.

08Frequently asked questions
Is marriage registration compulsory in Uttar Pradesh?
Yes. The Uttar Pradesh Marriage Registration Rules 2017 make registration of every marriage mandatory, regardless of religion. You apply online at igrsup.gov.in and both spouses attend the Sub-Registrar office to complete the entry.
Can I register a marriage fully online without visiting any office?
The application, uploads and fee payment are online on igrsup.gov.in, but both spouses and the two witnesses must appear in person at the Sub-Registrar office for verification before the certificate is issued.
What is the difference between Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act registration?
Under Section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 you register a marriage that has already been solemnised by ceremony. Under the Special Marriage Act 1954 the registrar solemnises and registers the marriage itself, after a 30-day public notice, which is the route for inter-faith or court marriages.
What if the Sub-Registrar refuses to register my marriage?
Ask for the refusal in writing. You can challenge it before the higher registration authority or by a writ petition in the Allahabad High Court. If the dispute is about the validity of the marriage, that goes to the family court or district civil court.
How long does it take to get the certificate?
When both spouses and witnesses attend and the documents match, the certificate is usually issued the same day or within a few working days. A Special Marriage Act registration takes longer because of the mandatory 30-day notice period.
Do my documents need to match exactly?
Yes. The name and date of birth must agree across Aadhaar, the high school certificate and other proofs. A mismatch is the most common cause of delay, so correct the weaker document before you apply.
