How to Check PPO and Pension Payment Status (2026)

A Pension Payment Order (PPO) is the document that sanctions your pension and carries a unique PPO number. That number is the key to everything: you need it to check whether your pension is being paid, to submit your annual life certificate, to raise a grievance, and to move your pension from one bank branch to another. How you find the PPO and check the payment status depends on which kind of pension you draw. An EPS-95 pensioner checks through the EPFO, while a central government pensioner usually checks through the paying bank and the Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) system. This page explains how to find your PPO number if you have lost it, how to check the pension payment status on the right portal for your pension type, the annual life certificate that keeps the pension running, and the grievance and writ route if your pension is stopped, reduced or paid wrong. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • PPO number: the 12-digit ID of your pension sanction; the key to checking status and raising grievances.
  • Lost it? EPS-95 pensioners use "Know your PPO" on the EPFO portal; your paying bank also has it.
  • EPS-95 status: the EPFO pensioner portal and the UMANG app, by PPO or UAN.
  • Keep it running: submit the annual life certificate, including digitally through Jeevan Pramaan.
  • If stopped or wrong: grievance (EPFiGMS or CPENGRAMS), then a High Court writ; Claw can track it.

01What the PPO number is

The PPO number is a 12-digit identifier on your Pension Payment Order. It stays with you for life and is used to:

  • Check whether your monthly pension has been credited.
  • Submit your annual life certificate.
  • Raise a grievance about a missed or wrong payment.
  • Transfer your pension account between bank branches.

Keep it safe. If you have lost it, you can recover it, as shown next.

02Find your PPO number

If you cannot find the PPO number on your pension order, recover it by the route that fits your pension:

  • EPS-95 pensioners: on the EPFO member or pensioner portal, use the "Know your PPO number" service and enter your bank account number or your PF member ID to retrieve it.
  • Through the bank: your pension paying bank branch has the PPO number against your account and can give it to you.
  • Central government pensioners: the CPAO and the paying bank hold the PPO; the Bhavishya system used at retirement also records it.

03Check EPS-95 pension status (EPFO)

If you draw a pension under the Employees Pension Scheme 1995, check the status through the EPFO:

  • Open the EPFO pensioner portal (the Pensioners Portal reached from epfindia.gov.in) and use the pension disbursement enquiry with your PPO number to see the payment detail month by month.
  • You can also check through the UMANG app, which carries EPFO pension services, using your PPO or UAN.
  • The portal shows credits, any stopped payment, and the status of your life certificate.

04Check central government pension status

A central government pensioner is usually paid by an authorised bank, with the Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) in the background:

  • Check the monthly credit in your pension bank account passbook or net banking, against the PPO.
  • Many banks run a dedicated pension portal or pension slip service where you log in and see the pension computation, arrears and deductions.
  • The CPAO system lets you track the PPO status and the dispatch of the PPO to your bank.

05The life certificate that keeps it running

A pension keeps running only if you prove you are alive each year. Miss this and the pension is paused.

  • Submit an annual life certificate, usually in November (with an extra window for the very old), either in person at the bank or digitally.
  • The digital life certificate (Jeevan Pramaan) at jeevanpramaan.gov.in lets you generate it with Aadhaar-based biometric or face authentication, so you do not have to visit the branch.
  • Once submitted, the certificate is linked to your PPO and the bank resumes or continues the pension.

06If a pension is stopped or wrong: the grievance and writ route

A pension that stops without reason, is cut, has arrears unpaid, or is computed wrongly is a serious matter, because for most pensioners it is the only income. The first step is the grievance system: for an EPS-95 pension use the EPFO grievance portal (EPFiGMS), and for a government pension use the pension grievance portal (CPENGRAMS) and the paying bank. Put the PPO number, the months missed and the amount in writing. If the grievance is ignored or rejected and your right to the pension is clear, a pension is treated as property and the denial of it can be challenged in the High Court by a writ petition, which is the usual remedy when a public authority withholds a pension. A money claim on the pension can also go to a civil court. To understand the writ remedy, see the writ of mandamus and the format of a writ petition.

If a stopped or wrong pension turns into a writ petition or a civil case, you can create a FREE Claw account and track that matter across the forum that hears it. Claw covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums in India, including the High Courts, so there is a real tracking home for the orders and next dates. Judgment search spans 30 crore+ judgments, with Supreme Court decisions from 1950 and High Court decisions from 1990, and results return in under 5 seconds, which helps you or your lawyer see how similar pension-denial cases were decided. Claw does not train its AI models on your documents. This is general information and not legal advice, and a contested pension still needs a lawyer for the arguments.

To see what is already filed in a forum, you can run a case search across Indian courts by party name.

08Frequently asked questions

What is a PPO number and where do I find it?

The Pension Payment Order number is a 12-digit identifier of your pension sanction. If you have lost it, EPS-95 pensioners can retrieve it with the "Know your PPO number" service on the EPFO portal using a bank account or PF member ID, and your pension paying bank also holds it against your account.

How do I check my EPS-95 pension payment status?

Use the EPFO pensioner portal with your PPO number to see the month-by-month payment, or the UMANG app which carries EPFO pension services. The portal shows credits, any stopped payment, and the status of your life certificate.

How does a central government pensioner check status?

Check the monthly credit in your pension bank account, use your bank pension portal or pension slip service for the computation and arrears, and track the PPO through the Central Pension Accounting Office system. Confirm the current portal names before relying on a specific link.

Why did my pension stop?

The most common reason is a missing annual life certificate, which pauses the pension until you submit it, in person or digitally through Jeevan Pramaan. Other reasons include a bank account or KYC problem. Check the status on your portal and, if it is wrongly stopped, raise a grievance.

What can I do if my pension is wrongly stopped or cut?

Raise a written grievance first, through EPFiGMS for an EPS-95 pension or CPENGRAMS and the bank for a government pension, quoting the PPO and the months missed. If that fails and your right is clear, a pension is treated as property and you can challenge the denial by a writ petition in the High Court. Claw can track that matter across the forum that hears it.
