How to Check Old Age Pension Status and Raise a Grievance

Old age pension in India comes through two layers. The central layer is the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), which pays eligible people aged 60 and above who are below the poverty line. On top of that most states run their own old-age pension schemes with their own amount, age rule and portal, and the money is usually paid straight into the bank or post office account by direct benefit transfer. This page shows you how to check your old age pension status online, how to read a payment that has stopped, and the exact way to raise a grievance or appeal if your application is rejected or your pension is held up. 01Which scheme is paying you

Before you can check anything, be clear on which scheme pays you, because the portal is different.

  • IGNOAPS (central, NSAP). For people aged 60 and above from a below-poverty-line household. The central contribution is a fixed monthly amount, higher after age 80, and records sit on the NSAP portal at nsap.nic.in.
  • State old-age pension. Most states add their own pension, often larger than the central share, with their own eligibility and a separate state social-welfare or social-security portal.

Many pensioners get a combined amount. If you are not sure which scheme sanctioned your pension, check the sanction letter or ask at the Block or District Social Welfare office.

02How to check your pension status

You can check the status online in a few ways. Keep your application number, Aadhaar and registered mobile ready.

  • NSAP portal. On nsap.nic.in use the pension payment or beneficiary search to see sanction and payment status by state, district and Sanction ID or Aadhaar.
  • State portal. Use your state social-welfare or social-security portal's beneficiary or payment-status page with your application or beneficiary ID.
  • UMANG app. Several states expose NSAP and pension status through UMANG.
  • Bank or post office passbook. The simplest proof of whether the money is reaching you; look for the DBT credit each cycle.

A status of "sanctioned" is not the same as "paid". Always cross-check the bank or post office account, because most pension complaints are about the transfer failing, not the sanction.

03Why a pension stops or is rejected

Most problems fall into a few buckets, and each has a different fix.

ProblemUsual reasonFirst step
Application rejectedAge, income or BPL criteria not met, or documents incompleteGet the rejection reason in writing, then appeal
Pension stopped suddenlyAadhaar or bank seeding failure, dormant account, or pending verificationFix seeding at the bank, then raise a grievance
Never started after sanctionPayment file error or wrong account detailsRaise a grievance with the sanction ID
Amount lower than expectedOnly the central share credited, state share pendingCheck with the state social-welfare office

Fixing the cause (often Aadhaar seeding or account details) solves most cases faster than a formal complaint. Keep the formal route for when the office does not act.

04How to raise a grievance

Use the grievance route when the pension is sanctioned but not reaching you, or an office is not responding.

  • Office first. Apply in writing to the Block Development Officer or the District Social Welfare Officer, with your sanction ID and a copy of the bank passbook. Ask for a dated receipt.
  • CPGRAMS. Lodge a grievance on the central public grievance portal at pgportal.gov.in, which routes it to the right department and gives you a tracking number.
  • State grievance system. Many states have their own grievance or helpline portal for social-security pensions; use it in parallel.

Keep the grievance number and every reply. If the grievance is closed without a real fix, you can escalate or appeal.

05How to appeal a rejection

If your application is rejected, you are entitled to know why and to challenge it.

  • Ask for the rejection in writing with the reason and the rule relied on.
  • File an appeal or review with the designated appellate authority named in your state scheme, usually a senior revenue or social-welfare officer (for example the SDM or District Magistrate), within the time the scheme allows.
  • If the state route is exhausted and the rejection is clearly wrong or against the rules, a pensioner can approach the High Court by writ petition under Article 226 of the Constitution. This is a court step, so take legal help.
Most old age pension problems are fixed at the office or through CPGRAMS. The court route exists for when a clear legal right is denied and the department still does not act.

06Documents to keep

  • The sanction letter or sanction ID.
  • Aadhaar, age proof and the BPL or income certificate relied on.
  • The bank or post office passbook showing the DBT credits (or the gap where they stopped).
  • Every grievance number, receipt and reply, with dates.

This paper trail is what an appellate authority or a court will want to see, so keep it in order from day one.

07When it becomes a legal matter: where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

Most pension problems end at the office or through CPGRAMS. A few do not, and when a wrongful rejection or a stopped pension turns into a writ petition before the High Court, or into any case before a court or tribunal, there is a real forum hearing it with a case number and dates. At that point you can create a FREE Claw account and track the matter by case number or by party name, so you and your advocate can follow the next date and the order sheet without chasing the registry.

Claw spans 9,102 courts, benches and forums, searches 30 crore+ judgments (Supreme Court from 1950, High Courts from 1990) and returns results in under 5 seconds, and it does not train on your documents. Tracking tells you what is on the cause list and the order sheet on the forums and date searched; it is a way to stay on top of your case, not legal advice, so use it alongside the lawyer handling your petition.

This page is general information for readers in India, not legal advice. Old-age pension amounts, eligibility and portals differ by state and change over time; confirm the current rule on the NSAP or your state portal.

09Frequently asked questions

How do I check my old age pension status online?

Use the NSAP portal at nsap.nic.in for IGNOAPS, or your state social-welfare or social-security portal for the state pension, with your sanction or beneficiary ID and Aadhaar. Also check your bank or post office passbook, because "sanctioned" does not always mean "paid".

My pension stopped without warning. What do I do first?

The most common reason is an Aadhaar or bank-account seeding failure or a dormant account. Fix the seeding at your bank first, then raise a grievance with the Block or District Social Welfare office and on CPGRAMS, quoting your sanction ID.

My application was rejected. Can I challenge it?

Yes. Ask for the rejection and reason in writing, then file an appeal or review with the designated appellate authority in your state scheme within the allowed time. If a clear legal right is denied and the department still does not act, a writ petition can be filed in the High Court.

What is the difference between the central and state old-age pension?

The central IGNOAPS is a fixed monthly amount under NSAP for people aged 60 and above below the poverty line, higher after age 80. Most states add their own pension with their own amount and rules, so many pensioners receive a combined payment.

Where do I lodge a grievance about social-security pension?

Start with the Block Development Officer or District Social Welfare Officer in writing, then lodge a grievance on CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in, which gives you a tracking number. Many states also have their own grievance portal for pensions.

Can I track a pension court case online?

Yes. If a rejection or stopped pension becomes a writ petition or any case before a court or tribunal, you can follow it by case number or party name. A free Claw account lets you track the next date and order sheet across courts and tribunals in one place.
