How to Check EPS 95 Pension Status and File an Appeal
The Employees Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS 95) is the pension part of EPF run by the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). When you retire or reach 58, a part of the provident fund contributions converts into a monthly pension, and EPFO issues a Pension Payment Order (PPO) that sets the amount and the account it is paid into. You can check your EPS 95 pension status, your PPO and whether the monthly credit has arrived through the EPFO pensioners portal. This page shows you how to check your EPS 95 pension status, how to read the PPO and the payment, and the exact way to raise a grievance and then a statutory appeal if EPFO rejects your claim or fixes your pension wrongly, including the much-litigated higher-pension option. 01How EPS 95 pension works
Under EPS 95, a part of the employer's EPF contribution goes into the pension fund during your working life. On retirement (normally at 58, with early pension possible from 50 at a reduced rate) EPFO calculates a monthly pension broadly on pensionable salary and pensionable service, and issues a Pension Payment Order (PPO).
The PPO number is your key reference for everything: checking status, raising a grievance, or submitting a Jeevan Pramaan life certificate each year. The pension is credited monthly to the bank account linked to the PPO.
02How to check your pension and PPO status
Keep your PPO number, UAN and registered mobile ready.
- EPFO pensioners portal. Check pension payment details, PPO status and the disbursing bank on the EPFO pensioners portal.
- EPF passbook portal. On passbook.epfindia.gov.in you can see the EPS contributions and the member passbook using your UAN.
- Bank passbook. Confirm the monthly pension credit has actually arrived.
- Claim status. If your pension claim (Form 10D) is still in process, track it under the member services claim-status option with your UAN.
A pension claim approved by EPFO is not the same as money in the account. Confirm both the PPO is generated and the monthly credit is reaching the linked bank account.

03Why a pension is wrong, low or stopped
| Problem | Usual reason | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Claim rejected | Service not eligible, KYC or service-history mismatch, or wrong form | Get the rejection order, then grieve |
| Pension lower than expected | Pensionable salary or service wrongly computed, or higher-pension option not applied | Ask EPFO for the calculation, then grieve |
| Pension stopped | Life certificate (Jeevan Pramaan) not submitted, or bank or KYC problem | Submit the DLC and fix KYC |
| PPO not issued | Processing delay or employer data gap | Raise a grievance with the claim details |
Many EPS problems are KYC or service-record mismatches that EPFO can correct once pointed out. Keep the formal appeal for a rejection or a calculation you believe is legally wrong.
04Step 1: raise an EPFO grievance
Before any appeal, use EPFO's own grievance system, because it is faster and often enough.
- Lodge a grievance on the EPF i-Grievance Management System (EPFiGMS) with your PPO number or UAN, stating exactly what is wrong.
- Escalate to the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner (RPFC) of your office if the grievance is not resolved.
- You can also file on CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in) for a central tracking number.
Get the final decision or order in writing, because you will need it for the appeal.
05Step 2: the statutory appeal
EPS 95 is governed by the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952, and it has its own appeal structure.
- A determination by the authority (for example an order under section 7-A) can be challenged by a statutory appeal under section 7-I of the EPF and MP Act 1952 to the Tribunal designated under the Act. The erstwhile EPF Appellate Tribunal's functions have been assigned to the notified tribunal, so confirm the current forum when you file.
- A pensioner can also challenge a wrong or arbitrary order by writ petition under Article 226 before the High Court, which is common where the point is legal rather than factual.
- Points of law travel further to the High Court and ultimately the Supreme Court.
Exhaust the EPFO grievance route first and get the order in writing. The statutory appeal and the writ are for a rejection or a calculation that is legally wrong, not for a delay that a grievance can fix.
06The higher-pension option
Many EPS 95 disputes are about the higher-pension option, where pension is computed on actual higher salary rather than the statutory wage ceiling. This followed the Supreme Court's November 2022 decision and the EPFO circulars and application windows that came after it.
If you applied for higher pension and your pension was not revised, or a demand for past contributions is raised, keep every application, acknowledgement and EPFO communication. These matters often go through the grievance route and then to the High Court, so the paper trail is what decides them. Rules and circulars here keep changing, so confirm the current EPFO position before acting.
07When it becomes a legal matter: where Claw fits
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
Many EPS 95 problems are fixed through EPFiGMS once the service record or KYC is corrected. When they are not, a wrong or rejected pension order becomes a statutory appeal under section 7-I of the EPF and MP Act 1952 before the designated tribunal, or a writ petition before the High Court, and the big higher-pension disputes run right up to the Supreme Court. Once your matter is before a tribunal or a court, there is a real case with a number and dates.
At that point you can create a FREE Claw account and track the matter by case number or party name, and look up how courts have decided similar EPS 95 points. Claw spans 9,102 courts, benches and forums, searches 30 crore+ judgments (Supreme Court from 1950, High Courts from 1990) and returns results in under 5 seconds, and it does not train on your documents. Tracking tells you what is on the cause list and the order sheet on the forums and date searched; it is a way to stay on top of your case, not legal advice, so use it alongside your advocate.

09Frequently asked questions
How do I check my EPS 95 pension status?
Use the EPFO pensioners portal with your PPO number to see pension and PPO details and the disbursing bank, and passbook.epfindia.gov.in with your UAN for the EPS contributions. Always cross-check the monthly credit in your bank passbook, because an approved claim is not the same as money received.
My EPS pension is lower than I expected. What can I do?
Ask EPFO in writing for the pension calculation (pensionable salary and service, and whether the higher-pension option was applied). If it is wrong, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS, and if that fails, pursue the statutory appeal or a writ, because a wrong calculation is a legal issue.
What is the appeal route if EPFO rejects my claim?
First raise a grievance on EPFiGMS and escalate to the RPFC, and get the order in writing. An order can then be challenged by a statutory appeal under section 7-I of the EPF and MP Act 1952 to the designated tribunal, or by a writ petition under Article 226 in the High Court. Confirm the current appellate forum when you file.
My pension stopped. Is it the life certificate?
Very often, yes. If the annual Jeevan Pramaan life certificate is not submitted or accepted, the pension pauses. Submit or re-submit the DLC and check your KYC and bank details; if the pension is still withheld without reason, raise an EPFO grievance.
What is the EPS higher-pension dispute about?
It is about calculating pension on actual higher salary instead of the statutory wage ceiling, following the Supreme Court's November 2022 decision and the EPFO circulars after it. If your higher-pension application was not acted on, keep every acknowledgement, because these matters go through grievance, the High Court and sometimes the Supreme Court.
Can I track an EPS 95 case online?
Yes. Once a rejection or calculation dispute becomes a statutory appeal before the tribunal or a writ before the High Court, you can follow it by case number or party name, and look up similar decisions. A free Claw account lets you track the next date and order sheet across courts and tribunals in one place.
