How to Check and Pay a Traffic E-Challan in Puducherry (and Dispute It)

A Puducherry traffic e-challan is a digital penalty raised by the traffic police or a camera against your vehicle or licence. You can see it and pay it online on the national Parivahan eChallan portal at echallan.parivahan.gov.in, which handles challans for the Union Territory, or on the mParivahan app. Puducherry covers four separate regions, Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, but the online challan route is the same for all of them. This page shows you how to check an e-challan in Puducherry, how to pay it online or offline, and how to contest a challan you think is wrong rather than paying a penalty you never earned. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Where to check: echallan.parivahan.gov.in or the mParivahan app, for all four regions.
  • How to pay: online by card, net banking or UPI, or at the traffic police office.
  • If it is wrong: raise a grievance on the portal, then contest before the traffic or virtual court or at a Lok Adalat.
  • Watch out: unpaid challans can block transport services and can be sent to a virtual court.

01The short answer

For a traffic e-challan in Puducherry:

  • Check it on the Parivahan eChallan portal at echallan.parivahan.gov.in using your challan, vehicle or driving licence number, or on the mParivahan app.
  • Pay it online by card, net banking or UPI, through supported apps, or at the traffic police office.
  • Dispute it if it is wrong, through the grievance option on the portal and, if that fails, before the court or virtual court that hears traffic matters, or at a Lok Adalat.

02How to check your e-challan

Puducherry uses the national eChallan system:

  • Open echallan.parivahan.gov.in and choose Check Challan Status.
  • Enter your challan number, vehicle number or driving licence number, then the captcha, and click Get Detail.
  • The portal lists each challan with the date, offence, amount and whether it is pending or paid.
  • The mParivahan app shows challans tied to your vehicle and licence.

Keep the challan number safe. You need it to pay and, if the challan is wrong, to raise a grievance.

03How to pay the challan

Once you can see a pending challan:

  • Online on Parivahan: select the challan, click Pay Now, and pay by card, net banking or UPI. Download the receipt.
  • Through payment apps: apps that offer a traffic challan or bill-payment option can pull and pay the challan by vehicle number.
  • Offline: you can pay at the Puducherry traffic police office or the transport office if you prefer.

Pay only against your own challan number and keep the receipt. An unpaid challan can block transport services and can be routed to a virtual court.

04Puducherry-specific notes

A few things are particular to Puducherry:

  • Four regions. Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam are separate and are geographically spread, but the eChallan portal covers all of them under the UT.
  • Puducherry town has dense tourist and two-wheeler traffic, so challans for no helmet, wrong parking, one-way violations and signal jumping are common.
  • There is no separate Puducherry-only payment website that replaces Parivahan. The national eChallan portal is the route, with the Puducherry Police and transport authorities behind it.

05How to dispute a wrong challan

You do not have to pay a challan you believe is wrong, such as a challan on the wrong vehicle, for an offence you did not commit, or a duplicate. Work through it in order:

  • Raise a grievance first. Use the grievance option on the eChallan portal, quote the challan number, and attach proof.
  • Approach the traffic police. If the online grievance is not resolved, take your proof to the office that issued the challan.
  • Let it go to court. A disputed or unpaid challan can be sent to the court or virtual court that hears traffic matters, where you contest it on the evidence.
  • Lok Adalat. Traffic challans are often taken up in National Lok Adalat sittings, where penalties are settled quickly. Watch for notices of these dates.
A challan is a proposed penalty, not a final verdict. If it is genuinely wrong, the honest response is to contest it before the court that hears it, not to pay and forget.

Paying a Puducherry challan is simple, but contesting a wrong one can become a court matter once it is pushed to a virtual court or taken up at a Lok Adalat. If that happens, Claw is where you keep track of it. Claw searches and monitors cases across 9,102 courts, benches and forums in India, with results in under 5 seconds and a library of 30 crore+ judgments (Supreme Court from 1950 and High Courts from 1990), and it does not train its AI models on your documents. You can create a FREE Claw account to follow your matter by party or case number, so you see the next date and any order without chasing the court. This is general information and a case-tracking tool, not legal advice on your challan. A business screening the people it relies on can use the same engine for a litigation check before appointing a director, or to follow a specific-performance suit on a contract.

09Frequently asked questions

Where do I pay a traffic e-challan in Puducherry?

On the national Parivahan eChallan portal at echallan.parivahan.gov.in, using your challan, vehicle or driving licence number. You can also pay through the mParivahan app, supported payment apps, or in person at the traffic police office.

Does the portal cover Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam?

Yes. Puducherry has four regions, Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, and the national eChallan portal covers all of them under the Union Territory. Search by your vehicle or driving licence number to find a challan in any region.

Can I refuse to pay a challan I think is wrong?

Yes. First raise a grievance on the eChallan portal with proof. If it is not resolved, a disputed challan can go to the court or virtual court that hears traffic matters, where you can contest it on the evidence.

What is a virtual court for traffic challans?

A virtual court lets you deal with a traffic challan online, including paying a court-imposed fine or contesting the challan, without appearing in person. Challans that are not paid or are disputed are often routed to it.

What happens if I ignore a Puducherry e-challan?

An unpaid challan stays pending against your vehicle and licence, can block transport services such as fitness, permit and transfer, and can be sent to a virtual court. It is better to pay a genuine challan or formally contest a wrong one.
