How to Check and Pay a Traffic E-Challan in Haryana (and Dispute It)

You get an SMS that a traffic challan was issued on your vehicle in Haryana, often from an ITMS camera in Gurugram, Faridabad or on a state highway, and you are not sure if it is real or correct. To check a Haryana traffic e-challan, open the official Parivahan e-Challan portal (echallan.parivahan.gov.in) and search with your vehicle number, driving licence number or challan number. If the challan is correct you pay it online. If it is wrong, you can contest it, and the matter goes to the Haryana Virtual Court, a Lok Adalat or the traffic magistrate. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Check: use echallan.parivahan.gov.in with your vehicle, licence or challan number.
  • Haryana quirk: most challans come from ITMS cameras in Gurugram, Faridabad and on highways.
  • Pay: click Pay Now on a correct challan and save the receipt.
  • Wrong challan: do not pay in a hurry. Raise a grievance and contest before the Virtual Court, Lok Adalat or traffic magistrate.
  • Track the case: create a free Claw account to follow a Virtual Court or traffic case by number.

01How traffic e-challans work in Haryana

A traffic e-challan is a fine for a road offence that is recorded and issued digitally and then linked to your vehicle number. In Haryana most e-challans now come from cameras and automatic systems rather than a constable with a paper book.

Haryana cities like Gurugram and Faridabad run Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) with cameras for red-light jumping, over-speeding, no-helmet and wrong-side driving. Haryana Police and the Transport Department issue these challans, and they appear on the national Parivahan e-Challan system against the registered owner of the vehicle.

Many people learn about a Haryana challan weeks later, by SMS or when they search their vehicle number. Notices can go to an old mobile number in the vehicle record, and some challans are for a sold vehicle or a misread number plate. It is worth checking your own vehicle number from time to time.

Not a tax challan

A traffic challan is a fine for a road offence. It is different from a tax payment challan used to deposit income tax or GST. This guide is only about traffic challans in Haryana.

02How to check your Haryana traffic challan online

You can check a Haryana challan for free on the official Parivahan e-Challan portal. Keep your vehicle number or driving licence number ready.

  1. Open the portal. Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Make sure the address ends in gov.in. Fake challan links sent by SMS are a known fraud in Haryana.
  2. Click Check Challan Status.
  3. Pick your search method. Challan number, vehicle number or driving licence number.
  4. Enter the captcha and click Get Detail. The page lists the challans on that number.
  5. Open each challan. Check the offence, date, time, place, amount and the camera photo. Match the plate in the photo to your own vehicle.

Haryana also provides updates through the Transport Department at haryanatransport.gov.in and through city traffic police channels. If a challan does not show on one site, try the other.

Check the camera photo before you pay. A Haryana challan is only worth paying if the vehicle, the place and the offence are really yours.

03How to pay a Haryana traffic challan online

If the challan is correct, you can pay it online from the same page where you checked it. A pending challan shows a Pay Now option.

  1. Search your challan as above.
  2. Click Pay Now next to the pending challan.
  3. Confirm your mobile number if asked; an OTP may be sent.
  4. Pay by UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking.
  5. Download the receipt and keep it. Check the status again after a day to confirm it shows as paid.

Haryana has from time to time run settlement or discount drives on old pending challans, often tied to a National Lok Adalat date. If the page shows an amount you do not recognise, stop and read the next section before paying.

Why the receipt matters

A paid receipt is your proof if the same challan shows again, or when you renew a licence or sell the vehicle. Save the PDF and the challan number.

05What to do if the Haryana challan is wrong

If you think a challan is wrong, do not ignore it and do not pay in a hurry. Raise a grievance on the portal, and contest the challan before the court that handles it.

Common reasons a challan is wrong

  • The plate in the camera photo is not your vehicle (misread or cloned plate).
  • You sold the vehicle, but the record still shows you as owner.
  • The place, date or time does not fit where your vehicle was.
  • The offence described does not match the photo.
  • The same offence was charged twice, or you already paid but it still shows pending.

Steps to dispute

  1. Collect proof. Save the challan, the camera photo, your RC, proof of sale if any, and anything showing where you were.
  2. File a grievance on the portal. Give the challan number, vehicle number, contact details and a short, clear description.
  3. Contest before the court if needed. If the challan is sent to a Virtual Court or you receive a notice, respond and ask to contest rather than pay.
  4. Attend the hearing or respond on time. Missing the date can lead to a further order against you.

Contesting means the fine is not paid until the court decides. The magistrate can drop the challan, reduce it, or confirm it.

06When a Haryana challan goes to court

A challan can move from the portal to a court if it stays unpaid or if you choose to contest it. In Haryana the usual routes are the Virtual Court, a National Lok Adalat or the traffic magistrate.

Virtual Court

A Virtual Court handles certain traffic offences online, so you do not need to visit a courtroom. The notice carries the case details, and you can respond, pay or contest from vcourts.gov.in.

National Lok Adalat

A Lok Adalat is a settlement forum. Pending Haryana traffic challans are often taken up here so they can be settled, sometimes at a reduced fine. It suits a challan that is right but has piled up, not one that is plainly wrong.

Traffic magistrate

If you contest the offence itself, the matter is heard by the traffic magistrate, in person or online. Your evidence and the challan photo both matter.

Track the case

Once a challan becomes a court case, it has a case number and dates. To follow those, see how to check case status on eCourts.
