How to Apply for and Fix a Ration Card in Maharashtra
A ration card in Maharashtra is both your family record for subsidised food grain under the National Food Security Act 2013 and a common address and identity proof. The card types are Antyodaya (AAY) for the poorest, Priority Household (the yellow BPL card), and above poverty line cards (the saffron and white cards), and the grain entitlement depends on the category. In Maharashtra the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department runs the system at mahafood.gov.in, and many services are also available through Aaple Sarkar. This page covers the full set of needs: applying for a new ration card, adding a newborn or a spouse, removing a member who has moved or died, correcting a name or address, and surrendering a card. It also explains the documents, the timeline, and what to do if a fair entitlement is wrongly denied. Last verified October 2026.
- Where: mahafood.gov.in and Aaple Sarkar for new cards, member changes and corrections.
- Types: Antyodaya, Priority Household (yellow), saffron and white cards.
- Need: Aadhaar of all members, address proof, income proof where the category depends on it.
- Draw grain: from the linked fair price shop by Aadhaar ePoS; One Nation One Ration Card works across states.
- If entitlement denied: grievance officer and State Food Commission, then writ in the Bombay High Court; Claw can track it.
01Card types and who qualifies
Maharashtra issues ration cards by economic category, and the category decides what you get at the fair price shop.
- Antyodaya (AAY). For the poorest families, with the highest grain entitlement at the lowest price.
- Priority Household (yellow / BPL). For below poverty line families covered under the National Food Security Act.
- Above poverty line (saffron). For families above the poverty line but within an income ceiling, with a limited entitlement.
- White card. For higher income families, used mainly as identity and address proof rather than for subsidised grain.
One family has one card, and each member is listed with the head of the family. Eligibility for subsidised grain is tied to the income limits and the priority lists the state maintains.
02Documents you need
Keep clear scans ready before you start. The usual set is:
| Document | Why it is asked |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar of every family member | Identity and to link the card to Aadhaar |
| Proof of residence (electricity bill, rent agreement or tax receipt) | Address of the family |
| Proof that you surrendered any earlier card | To avoid duplicate cards |
| Income proof, where the category depends on income | To fix the card type |
| Passport size photo of the head of family | Printed on the card |
| Bank passbook, where asked | For benefit linking |
To add a newborn, carry the birth certificate and the parents card. To add a spouse, carry the marriage certificate and the spouse removal proof from the earlier family card. Use the exact Aadhaar spelling everywhere.
03Apply, add, remove or correct
The Food Department portal and Aaple Sarkar handle most ration card work. Pick the service that fits your need.
- New card. On mahafood.gov.in or Aaple Sarkar, open the ration card service, fill the family details and upload Aadhaar, address and income proofs.
- Add a member. Choose the add member service, enter the new member details and attach birth or marriage proof.
- Remove a member. Choose remove member for a death, a move or a marriage, and attach the death certificate or the transfer proof.
- Correct details. Choose the correction service for a name, age or address error and attach the correct proof.
- Surrender. If you move out of the state or hold a duplicate, surrender the old card so it does not block a new one.
After you submit, the application goes to the local rationing or tahsil food office for verification before the card updates.
04Timeline, delivery and the fair price shop
The charge for a ration card is small, set by the state, with a modest fee for a new card or a duplicate.
Maharashtra notifies a time limit for ration card services under the state Right to Public Services rules, and most applications are decided inside that window once the local office verifies. Once the card is active, you draw your grain from the linked fair price shop (ration shop), now mostly through an ePoS machine with Aadhaar authentication. The One Nation One Ration Card scheme also lets a Priority or Antyodaya cardholder draw grain from a fair price shop in another state while travelling.
Keep your mobile number updated with the card so you get the OTP and status messages, and check that every member is correctly linked before a scheme deadline.
05Track and verify your card
Log back in to the portal and open your application status with the application or RC number.
- When the status shows approved, download the e-ration card where the portal allows.
- Check the member list, the category and the address before you use it.
- If the status is stuck at verification, visit the local rationing office or the tahsil food office with your application number.
06Common reasons it is rejected
Most rejections are fixable. The usual grounds are:
- A member is already listed on another family card, which blocks a duplicate.
- Name, age or address does not match Aadhaar.
- Income proof does not match the category you applied for.
- Aadhaar seeding failed, or the ePoS authentication keeps failing at the shop.
If the issue is paperwork, correct it and re-apply. If the office wrongly denies a category or grain you are entitled to under the National Food Security Act, the grievance and legal route below applies.
07If a fair entitlement is denied
Food security is a legal right, not a favour. If the fair price shop or the food office wrongly denies you grain, cuts your entitlement, or refuses a card you qualify for, the National Food Security Act 2013 builds in a grievance system. You first use the district grievance redressal officer and the State Food Commission, which can order relief and even compensation for a wrongful denial. If that fails and a clear legal right is being denied, you can move a writ petition in the Bombay High Court. A deficiency in a paid service, such as short weight at the shop, can also raise a consumer complaint.
