Jurisdiction Guide · CAT Allahabad

A government employee or a department lawyer waiting on an Original Application at the Central Administrative Tribunal in Allahabad usually wants one answer: what is the status of my case, and when is the next date? This page explains how to check CAT Allahabad case status online, which search method to use, what the status words mean, and which cases the Allahabad bench actually hears.

The short answer
  • Where: the official CAT portal, cgat.gov.in, with the Allahabad bench selected.
  • How: search by case number, diary number or party name.
  • Jurisdiction: Uttar Pradesh (except the Lucknow bench districts) and Uttarakhand.
  • Different bench: Lucknow cases are filed at the separate Lucknow bench.

01Why CAT Allahabad status is hard to find

The Central Administrative Tribunal hears service disputes of central government employees, and the Allahabad bench handles a large share of them from Uttar Pradesh. Checking where one such case stands is harder than it should be, for three reasons.

The records sit on a tribunal portal, not a court portal

CAT cases are not on the same system as High Court or district court cases. Many people search the eCourts site first and find nothing. The official CAT case information system is reached through the CAT portal at cgat.gov.in.

Bench and number must both be right

CAT has benches in many cities. A case number only makes sense with the right bench, so a search with Allahabad selected will not find a case filed at Lucknow or Delhi. Many failed searches come from this one mistake.

Names are spelt in many ways

Service cases often carry long names, initials and department titles such as Union of India through its Secretary. A small spelling difference can hide a case from a strict search.

To check CAT Allahabad case status, pick the Allahabad bench on the official CAT portal and search by case number, diary number or party name.

02About the Allahabad bench and its jurisdiction

The Allahabad bench sits at 35, M.G. Marg, Civil Lines, Allahabad (now officially called Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. The tribunal still lists the bench under the name Allahabad.

According to the CAT list of benches, the Allahabad bench covers the State of Uttar Pradesh, except the districts given to the Lucknow bench, and the State of Uttarakhand.

The Lucknow bench is a separate bench at 2, Rana Pratap Marg, Moti Mahal, Lucknow. It covers districts such as Lucknow, Hardoi, Kheri, Rai Bareli, Sitapur, Unnao, Faizabad, Barabanki, Gonda, Sultanpur and Pratapgarh. So a central government employee posted in Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra or Gorakhpur usually files at Allahabad, while one posted in Lucknow files at Lucknow.

Which bench is my case in?

Look at the top of your Original Application or order. The bench name is printed there. If you are unsure, check the case on the Lucknow bench too. For other benches, see the CAT case search guide.

03How to check CAT Allahabad case status, step by step

You can check CAT Allahabad case status online in a few minutes, using the official portal. Screens change from time to time, but the steps are broadly these.

  1. Open the portal. Go to cgat.gov.in and find the case status section.
  2. Select the bench. Choose Allahabad from the bench list.
  3. Pick a search method. Use case number, diary number or party name (see the table below).
  4. Enter the details. For a case number, give the case type (usually OA for Original Application), the number and the year. Add the captcha if shown.
  5. Open the record. The result usually shows parties, the stage of the case, the next date and the orders passed.
  6. Save what you need. Note the next date and download any order you need. Check again before every hearing, as dates can change.

Daily lists for the bench are published as cause lists. If you only want to know whether your case is listed tomorrow, look for the Allahabad cause list for that date. For a wider view of tracking cases across forums, see case search across Indian courts.

04Search methods compared

Which method is best depends on what you have in hand.

05Status words explained

The words on a CAT status page are short but important. These are the common ones.

  • Pending: the case is live and not yet finally decided.
  • Disposed: the tribunal has finally decided the case. Check the order for the result.
  • Admission: the stage where the tribunal decides whether to take up the application and issue notice.
  • Notice issued: the respondents have been told to reply.
  • Reply / counter: the respondents file their response. The applicant may then file a rejoinder.
  • Interim order: a temporary direction, such as a stay, while the case is pending.
  • Reserved for orders: hearing is over and the tribunal will pronounce the order later.
  • Next date: the date the case is listed again. It can be moved.
  • Cause list: the daily list of cases the bench will take up.

06Common problems and fixes

Most failed searches have a simple cause. Try these in order.

  • No result for a number: check the case type, year and that Allahabad is selected, not Lucknow.
  • No result for a name: try the surname only, or the department name, and drop initials.
  • Old case not found: older records may sit under a different number or in the diary record. Try the diary number.
  • Portal slow or down: try again later in the day, or check the bench cause list.
  • Appeal to a higher forum: orders of the tribunal are generally challenged before the High Court. Other tribunals have their own portals, for example see ITAT appeal status by PAN.

Once a case moves from the tribunal to a High Court or the Supreme Court, you need to track it there. See Supreme Court case tracking software for that stage.
