01Check NGT case status on the official portal
The official source for NGT case status is the tribunal’s own website, greentribunal.gov.in. Always treat it as the primary source. Here are the steps.
- Open greentribunal.gov.in and go to the Case Status section.
- Pick a search mode: case number or party name.
- By case number: select the bench, the case type (OA, Appeal, MA and so on), enter the case number, select the year, and fill the captcha.
- By party name: select the bench, type the party name, select the case year, and fill the captcha.
- Open the matching case. You will see the current status, the next listed date and, where uploaded, the order sheet or judgment.
The portal works bench by bench, so you may need to repeat the search on more than one bench if you do not know where a matter is listed.
Be the layer above the portal
The NGT site is the record. A tool like Claw sits above it: it saves you from checking five benches one by one and sends alerts when a hearing date or order changes.
02NGT case status methods at a glance
Use this table to pick the method that fits what you already have.
| Method | What you need | Where to enter it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| By case number | Bench, case type (OA, Appeal, MA), number, year | NGT Case Status page, case number option, or Claw | Most exact method. The bench is essential because the same number can exist at more than one bench. |
| By party name | Party name, bench, case year | NGT Case Status page, party name option, or Claw | Works when you do not have the number. Results depend on how the name was typed at filing, so try short and full forms. |
| By diary number | Diary number from the filing receipt | Official portal, where offered | Useful in the first days after filing, before a case number is given. |
Not sure which to use? If you have the number, use it. If not, search by party name and then confirm the match using the case type and year.
03NGT benches and cities: where to check
The NGT is one tribunal sitting at five places. Pick the bench closest to where the environmental issue arose, since a matter is generally listed by where the cause of action arose, not where the parties are based.
| Bench / city | Region it generally covers | How to search status |
|---|---|---|
| Principal Bench, New Delhi | Delhi, northern states and matters listed at the Principal Bench | Select Principal Bench on the portal, then search by case number or party name. Claw covers it in the same search. |
| Central Zone, Bhopal | Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states | Select Bhopal on the portal. Claw covers it in the same search. |
| Western Zone, Pune | Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and neighbouring states | Select Pune on the portal. Claw covers it in the same search. |
| Eastern Zone, Kolkata | West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and the north eastern states | Select Kolkata on the portal. Claw covers it in the same search. |
| Southern Zone, Chennai | Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Select Chennai on the portal. Claw covers it in the same search. |
If you are unsure of the bench, check the one nearest the site of the issue first, then widen the search to the others.
04What the NGT status words mean
These are the words you will see most often in a case status result.
- Pending: the case is still alive and has not been decided.
- Listed: the case has been placed on a cause list for a hearing on a given date.
- For orders: arguments are done or the matter is up only for an order, and the bench is expected to pass one.
- Reserved: the bench has heard the matter and kept its decision for a later date.
- Disposed: the case has been decided or closed. The final order or judgment is the document to read.
The NGT has a statutory aim of deciding matters within six months of filing, so a case can move from listed to disposed faster than in most forums.
05How to read an NGT case number
NGT case numbers combine the case type, a serial number, the filing year and a zone code, for example OA 70/2020/EZ (Eastern Zone) or OA 285/2026/PB (Principal Bench).
- OA (Original Application): the main filing type, such as OA No. 227 of 2026.
- Appeal: against clearances or board orders, such as Appeal No. 37 of 2025.
- MA (Miscellaneous Application): an application inside a pending OA, such as MA No. 112 of 2024 in OA No. 107 of 2020.
Always keep the zone code with the number. The NGT does not use CNR numbers from eCourts, so a related High Court matter will carry a completely separate number. A new filing first gets a diary number and only later a formal case number.
06Cause list and next hearing date
Each of the five benches publishes its own cause list, and there is no single combined list. A company with matters at the Principal Bench and a zonal bench must check both lists on the relevant days. The next hearing date also shows in the case status result for each matter.
Orders and judgments are uploaded after they are signed, but timing varies by bench. For a matter with a running limitation period, such as the 30 day window (extendable up to 90) to challenge an environmental clearance, do not wait for the upload. Get a certified copy from the registry. See how to get certified copies of court orders in India for the process, and how to track tribunal matters in India for tracking across tribunals.
07Common problems and workarounds
Case not found
Check the bench and zone code first. For a recent filing, try the diary number, since case number allotment can take a few days. For party name search, try both the short and full legal name of the entity.
Order passed but not visible online
Contact the relevant zonal registry or apply for a certified copy, especially if a deadline is running against you.
Matters across several forums
Companies with environmental exposure often have NGT matters alongside pollution control board proceedings, writ petitions and sometimes NCLT matters on the same project. For the wider picture see case search across Indian courts and NCLT and NCLAT case tracking software.

Can I check NGT case status by case number?
Yes. Select the bench, the case type (OA, Appeal or MA), the number and the year. Keep the zone code with the number because the same serial number can exist at more than one bench.

Hearing dates and orders are updated by each bench after the sitting, but timing varies by bench and by registry workload. For a deadline that cannot slip, get a certified copy from the registry instead of waiting for the upload.
Which NGT bench should I check?
Check the bench nearest where the environmental issue arose: Principal Bench New Delhi, or the Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata or Chennai zonal bench. If unsure, start with the nearest one and widen the search.
