How to find the Calcutta High Court daily cause list online, what each list type means, and how to search by date, bench, court number, party or advocate.

How-To · Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court cause list tells you which matters will be heard, before which bench, in which court room, and in what order. Missing your slot because you found the list late, or scanned the wrong PDF, is a real risk. You can check the list online for free on the official sources. This guide shows the steps, explains the list types, and lists the ways to search.

The short answer
  • Where: the Cause Lists section of the Calcutta High Court website, or eCourts High Court Services.
  • How: pick the side or bench, the date and the list type, then search for your matter.
  • List types: daily, advance, supplementary and weekly.
  • Save time: Claw shows the next hearing date for your matters automatically, with alerts.

01Why the Calcutta High Court cause list matters

The cause list is the working document of the court. It is the only place that shows the real hearing order for a day. A case status page may say a matter is listed, but the cause list shows the court number, the bench and the item number.

For a busy Kolkata practice, this has three practical uses.

  • Planning the day: you know which court to be in and roughly when your item will be called.
  • Briefing clients: you can tell a client the likely hearing slot, not just the date.
  • Avoiding adverse orders: a missed listing can lead to a dismissal for default or an ex parte order.

The lists are long and are published as PDFs. Finding one line in a long PDF every evening is slow work, especially when you have many matters.

02Where to find the cause list online

There are two official places to look.

  • The Calcutta High Court website: the Cause Lists section on calcuttahighcourt.gov.in carries the lists published by the Court. Notices about the lists also appear under the Notices section.
  • eCourts High Court Services: the common portal at hcservices.ecourts.gov.in lets you pick the Calcutta High Court and open its cause list, and also check case status.

Printed lists

The Court has issued a notice that from 1 April 2025 the printing and distribution of the daily and monthly cause lists is handled by the Judicial Department, Government of West Bengal. This is about printed copies. Check the notice on the official site if you need hard copies.

Always trust the official list over any copy shared on messaging apps. Updated or supplementary lists can replace earlier ones.

03Steps to check the cause list on the official portal

  1. Open the source. Visit the High Court website and open Cause Lists, or open eCourts High Court Services and select the High Court of Calcutta.
  2. Choose the side or bench. Pick Appellate Side, Original Side or the relevant Circuit Bench.
  3. Select the date. Choose the hearing date. Lists for a day are usually published the evening before, so tomorrow's list may not be there early in the day.
  4. Select the list type. Choose daily, advance, supplementary or weekly.
  5. Find your matter. Search by case number, party, advocate or court number, or open the PDF and use your reader's find option.
  6. Record the details. Note the court number, the bench and the item number. Check the list again in the morning for any supplementary list.

If you only want to know the status of a case, not the hearing order, see our guide to checking Calcutta High Court case status.

04List types explained

You will see more than one kind of list. Knowing the difference saves you from acting on the wrong one.

List typeWhat it isWhen to use it
Daily cause listThe list of matters to be taken up on that day, bench by bench, in order. The main list to rely on for the day.
Advance cause listA list published ahead of time so lawyers can prepare.Planning the next few days.
Supplementary listExtra matters added after the main list was published.Check on the morning of the hearing.
Weekly listMatters fixed for hearing during a particular week.Weekly planning and client updates.

Names and timing of lists can differ between the Original Side and the Appellate Side, and by bench. Read the heading on each PDF.

05Ways to search the cause list

Search byWhat you enterBest when
DateThe hearing dateYou want to see a full day's list.
Bench or judgeThe bench or judge nameYou are tracking one court for the day.
Court numberThe court room numberYou know where your matter sits.
Party namePetitioner or respondent nameYou do not have the case number handy.
Advocate nameThe advocate on recordYou want every matter listed for you or your chambers.

Available options depend on the portal. The eCourts portal lets you search by advocate name and case details, while the Court website mainly offers lists by date and bench. A spelling mismatch in party or advocate names is the most common reason a search returns nothing.

06Benches of the Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court has jurisdiction over West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Its principal seat is at Kolkata. Lists are organised by side and by bench.

  • Principal Bench, Kolkata: sits on both the Appellate Side and the Original Side. Division Benches and single judge benches have their own lists.
  • Circuit Bench at Jalpaiguri: hears matters from the northern districts.
  • Circuit Bench at Port Blair: serves the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and its cause list can be opened by selecting a date.

Pick the right side first. Looking for a commercial or Original Side matter in an Appellate Side list is a common slip.

07Common problems and how to handle them

  • Tomorrow's list is not out yet. Lists are usually published in the evening. Check again later, and use the advance list for planning.
  • Your matter is not found. Search by case number as well as party name. Check the other side or bench.
  • The list changed. Look for a supplementary or revised list on the morning of the hearing.
  • The site is slow or down. Try the eCourts High Court Services portal as a second source.
  • Hearing on paper, not in the list. Check the last order for the next date, and the case status page.

If an order has fixed your next date, an AI tool that reads orders can help. See our guide to an AI court order summariser.

Claw tracks matters across 9,102 forums, and its case search returns results in under 5 seconds.

Claw has a free plan for individual advocates, which includes a daily personalised cause list. Team and enterprise plans are paid. Create a FREE Claw account and get the next hearing date for your Calcutta High Court matters automatically, with alerts.
