How-To · Court Status · Bombay High Court

You have a Bombay High Court matter and you need to know where it stands: is it listed tomorrow, is it reserved, or has an order come out? The court sits at several places and files cases under many case types, so the first hurdle is simply knowing which portal to use and which bench to pick. To check Bombay High Court case status, go to the eCourts High Court Services portal or the official Bombay High Court website, select the bench, and search by case number, CNR or party name. You can also track the matter in Claw by party name, with hearing and order alerts.

The short answer
  • Official places: the eCourts High Court Services portal and bombayhighcourt.nic.in.
  • Pick the bench first: Bombay, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Goa or Kolhapur.
  • Six ways to search: case number, CNR, party name, advocate, FIR number, filing number.
  • Jurisdiction: Maharashtra, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
  • Track it in Claw: free account, search by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts.

01The official places to check Bombay High Court status

Two official sources give you Bombay High Court case status. Both are free to use and both are run by the judiciary.

  • The eCourts High Court Services portal: a common portal for many High Courts. You pick the High Court of Bombay and the bench, and then search. See hcservices.ecourts.gov.in.
  • The official Bombay High Court website: carries case status, cause lists, orders and notices for the court. See bombayhighcourt.nic.in.

The Bombay High Court is one of the oldest in India and handles a very large number of filings every year. Status pages therefore change daily, and the portal is the source of truth for the court’s own record.

02Step by step: check Bombay High Court case status

The steps below are for the eCourts High Court Services portal. The Bombay High Court website follows the same logic.

  1. Open the portal and go to Case Status.
  2. Select the High Court of Bombay from the High Court list.
  3. Select the bench. Pick the bench where the case is filed: Bombay, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Goa or Kolhapur. A wrong bench is the most common reason a search shows nothing.
  4. Choose how to search. Use the tab for case number, CNR, party name, advocate, FIR number or filing number.
  5. Enter the details and the CAPTCHA, then submit.
  6. Click View on your case to see the case history, the next hearing date, interim orders and the final order.

Keep the CNR number

Once you find your case, note its CNR number. It is a 16 character code that stays with the case, so it is the fastest way to find the same matter again. See the glossary of Indian litigation terms for other terms you may meet.

03Search methods for the Bombay High Court

Use the method that matches what you have in hand. If you have the CNR number, use that first.

MethodWhat you needNotes
Case numberCase type, case number and yearBest when you hold the filing paper. Case type must match exactly, for example a writ petition or an appeal.
CNR numberThe 16 character CNR, typed without hyphens or spacesMost precise. One CNR points to one case.
Party nameName of petitioner, respondent or accused (at least 3 characters) and the yearUse when you do not have the number. Spelling variants can hide results.
Advocate nameAdvocate name or bar registration numberUseful for a firm to see matters filed by one advocate.
FIR numberPolice station, FIR number and yearMainly for criminal matters such as bail, quashing and criminal writ petitions.
Filing numberFiling number and filing yearFor a newly filed matter that has no registration number yet.

The portal also lets you search by act and section. Search options can change, so check the live form.

04Bombay High Court benches and territorial jurisdiction

The Bombay High Court has jurisdiction over Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The court sits at the principal seat in Mumbai and at other benches, so you must pick the right one when you search.

05What the status words mean

The status field is short, but each word tells you something different.

  • Pending: the case is still alive. It has not been finally decided.
  • Disposed: the case has ended with a final order, a withdrawal or a dismissal. Check the order for the exact result.
  • Listed: the case is on the cause list for a particular date and court room.
  • For orders: the arguments are done on that point and the court will pass an order. It may be a short order or a date to be given.
  • Reserved: the court has heard the matter and kept the judgment for later. There is no fixed date, so you must keep checking.

The next hearing date on the portal is the date the case is expected before the court. It can still move if the court does not take up the matter. For daily listing, see our guide to the Bombay High Court cause list.

06Why status checks go wrong

Most failed searches come from a few small mistakes.

  • Wrong bench. A Nagpur case will not appear if you select the principal seat.
  • Wrong case type or year. The case type code must match the filing.
  • Name spelling. Indian names have many spellings. A search for one spelling can miss the case filed under another.
  • Manual repeat. The portal shows status only when you look. If you have many matters, you must check each one again and again, and you can miss a reserved judgment or a sudden listing.

For firms with many matters, tracking by party name and getting alerts is more reliable than daily manual checks. If your work is IP matters before this court, see how a single IP litigation registry workflow works, and for a well known trademark point, see well known trademarks under Rule 124.
