Jurisdiction Guide · Armed Forces Tribunal, Chennai
To check AFT Chennai case status, open the official Armed Forces Tribunal portal at aft.gov.in, go to the Case Management section, and search by case type, case number and year (for an Original Application, the OA number), or by diary number or party name. You can also check it in Claw by party name or number, with a free account. This guide covers the steps, what the Chennai bench covers, and what each status word means.
- Official portal: aft.gov.in, Case Management, choose the Chennai bench.
- Best method: OA number and year. Use the diary number for a new filing.
- Chennai covers: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. Kerala goes to Kochi.
- In Claw: search by party name or number with a free account, plus hearing and order alerts.
01Why AFT status is hard to track
A serving or retired soldier, sailor or airman with a service dispute usually has one question: when is my case next listed, and what did the Tribunal order last time? Answering it is harder than it sounds.
The case number is not always in hand
Many petitioners file through a counsel or a unit welfare cell and only hold a filing receipt. That receipt carries a diary number, not the final OA number. Until the matter is registered and numbered, searching by case number finds nothing.
The Tribunal sits in several places
The Armed Forces Tribunal has a Principal Bench in Delhi and regional benches in other cities. A case filed at one bench will not show up under another. Looking at the wrong bench is the most common reason people think their case has vanished.
Orders come as daily orders, not summaries
The portal shows daily orders by date. If you miss a date, you can miss a direction to file a reply or a counter within a time limit.

02What the Chennai bench covers
The AFT Regional Bench at Chennai hears service matters of armed forces personnel from its own territory. According to the Tribunal’s jurisdiction page, that territory is Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Kerala and Karnataka are handled by a different bench, the Kochi Regional Bench. So a Kerala-based petitioner should look at Kochi, not Chennai.
What kind of cases are heard
The Armed Forces Tribunal Act, 2007 gives the Tribunal power over disputes on commission, appointments, enrolment and conditions of service of persons under the Army Act, 1950, the Navy Act, 1957 and the Air Force Act, 1950. It also hears appeals against court-martial orders, findings and sentences. In practice, Chennai matters often involve disability pension, service pension, promotion, discharge and release, and pay or allowance disputes.
The bench sits at the Old MH Building, Rudra Road, St. Thomas Mount, Chennai.
A case filed at the Chennai bench will not show under another bench. Always confirm the bench before you search.
03How to check AFT Chennai case status on the official portal
The official Armed Forces Tribunal website is aft.gov.in. Case status sits under its Case Management section. Follow these steps.
- Open aft.gov.in in your browser.
- Go to the Case Management section and choose Case Status.
- Select the bench. Pick Chennai.
- Choose the case type. For most service disputes this is Original Application (OA). Other types include Transferred Application, Review Application, Miscellaneous Application and appeals.
- Enter the case number and the year. For example, an OA number and the year of filing.
- If you do not have the OA number yet, use the Diary Status option and enter the diary number from your filing receipt.
- Submit and read the result: stage, next date and last order.
- To see orders by date, use the Daily Orders link, which shows orders for a chosen date range.
Note that the portal layout can change, and some regional pages may load slowly. If a search returns nothing, check the bench, the year and the case type before assuming the case is missing. Also see the daily orders page.
04Methods compared: OA number, diary number, case number, party name
You can search a Chennai AFT matter in four ways. The best one depends on what you have in hand.
| Method | What you need | Where it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| OA number | Case type OA, number and year | Official portal, Claw | Use the Chennai bench, not Delhi |
| Diary number | Diary number and year from the filing receipt | Official portal (Diary Status), Claw where available | Not valid after the case gets a final number |
| Case number | Any case type (OA, MA, RA, TA), number, year | Official portal, Claw | Wrong type or year gives no result |
| Party name | Name of applicant or respondent | Official portal (where offered), Claw | Rank and spelling differences, such as Sepoy or Hav |
Lead with the OA number whenever you have it. It is the cleanest and gives one exact record. Use the diary number only for a matter that is freshly filed. Party name is the fallback, and it works best when the tool tolerates spelling and rank differences.
05Status fields explained
The status page uses short words. Here is what they mean for your case.
- Pending: the case is alive and not yet decided. It may be waiting for a reply, a rejoinder, or a hearing date.
- Disposed: the Tribunal has decided the case or closed it. Check the final order for the result and any time limit to comply.
- Listed: the case is on the cause list for a given date. Listed does not mean it will be heard that day.
- For orders: the matter is listed so the bench can pass an order, for example on admission, a reply, or an interim prayer.
- Next date: the date of the next listing. It can shift, so recheck close to the date.
- Diary number: the number given when papers are first filed, before the case gets its final OA number.
Reading a disposed case
A disposed case can still matter. Government may file an appeal to the Supreme Court within the time the law allows, so note the date of the order. For a view of Supreme Court tracking, see Supreme Court case tracking software.
06Common problems when checking Chennai AFT status
No result for a valid number
First check the bench, then the year, then the case type. A Miscellaneous Application inside an OA has its own number.
Portal slow or down
Government portals are often slow near peak hours. Try again later, or use a tool that keeps a copy of case updates.
Case moved to another bench
Transfers between benches happen. If your matter disappears from Chennai, check Delhi and Kochi too.
Missing a hearing date
The official portal does not send you reminders. Add the next date to your own calendar, or set up alerts. For other tribunals, such as income tax appeals, see how to check ITAT appeal status. For Delhi and other benches, see the parent guide on the Armed Forces Tribunal.
07Where Claw fits
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
For AFT Chennai, Claw gives you a second way in when the official portal is slow or when you only know a party name. Claw covers 9,102 forums, holds 30 crore+ judgments, and returns results in under 5 seconds. Name search tolerates spelling differences, which helps with service records where ranks and initials vary.
